The work value of information

We present quantitative relations between work and information that are valid both for finite sized and internally correlated systems as well in the thermodynamical limit. We suggest work extraction should be viewed as a game where the amount of work an agent can extract depends on how well it can guess the micro-state of the system. In general it depends both on the agent's knowledge and risk-tolerance, because the agent can bet on facts that are not certain and thereby risk failure of the work extraction. We derive strikingly simple expressions for the extractable work in the extreme cases of effectively zero- and arbitrary risk tolerance respectively, thereby enveloping all cases. Our derivation makes a connection between heat engines and the smooth entropy approach. The latter has recently extended Shannon theory to encompass finite sized and internally correlated bit strings, and our analysis points the way to an analogous extension of statistical mechanics.

Nonclassicality without entanglement enables bit commitment

We investigate the existence of secure bit commitment protocols in the convex framework for probabilistic theories. The framework makes only minimal assumptions, and can be used to formalize quantum theory, classical probability theory, and a host of other possibilities. We prove that in all such theories that are locally non-classical but do not have entanglement, there exists a bit commitment protocol that is exponentially secure in the number of systems used.

Teleportation fidelities of squeezed states from thermodynamical state space measures

We introduce a "microcanonical" measure (complying with the "general canonical principle") over the second moments of pure bosonic Gaussian states under an energy constraint. We determine the average fidelity for the teleportation of states distributed according to such a measure and compare it to a threshold obtained from a feasible classical strategy. Furthermore, we show that, under the proposed measure, the distribution of the entanglement concentrates around a finite value at the thermodynamical limit and, in general, the typical entanglement of Gaussian states with maximal energy E is not close to the maximum allowed by E.
