Limits on beyond standard model messengers as ultra high energy cosmic rays

Up to date, there is no consensus regarding the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) beyond the Greisen--Zatsepin--Kuzmin (GZK) limit. In order for these UHECRs to reach the Earth, an extremely suppressed interaction between them and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is required, which is impossible for standard model (SM) particles, except neutrinos. In this letter, we present constraints on the parameter space of models involving axion-like particles and dark photons, as candidates for UHECRs, by assuming that these particles can traverse the visible Universe without decaying. In the case of axion-like particles, the constraints are tighter than those given in previous works. We present for the first time constraints on the parameter space of dark photon models, by considering their kinetic term mixing with SM photons.

Kaluza-Klein cosmology from five-dimensional Lovelock-Cartan theory

We study the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of the Lovelock-Cartan theory in five-dimensional spacetime, with a compact dimension of $S^1$ topology. We find cosmological solutions of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker class in the reduced spacetime. The torsion and the fields arising from the dimensional reduction induce a nonvanishing energy-momentum tensor in four dimensions. We find solutions describing expanding, contracting and bouncing universes. The model shows a dynamical compactification of the extra dimension in some regions of the parameter space.

A polynomial model of purely affine gravity

We present a purely affine gravitational model in four dimensions built up entirely on the bases of full diffeomorphism invariance, and power- counting renormalizability. We show that its non-relativistic limit around a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime yields to a Newtonian gravity.

Einstein's gravity from a polynomial affine model

We show that the effective field equations for a recently formulated polynomial affine model of gravity, in the sector of a torsion-free connection, accept general Einstein manifolds---with or without cosmological constant---as solutions. Moreover, the effective field equations are partially those obtained from a gravitational Yang--Mills theory known as Stephenson--Kilmister--Yang theory. Additionally, we find a generalization of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in General Relativity within a "minimally" coupled scalar field in this affine model. Finally, we present a brief analysis of the propagators of the gravitational theory, and count the degrees of freedom. For completeness we prove that a Birkhoff-like theorem is valid for the analyzed sector.

Left-Right Symmetric Models at the High-Intensity Frontier

We study constraints on Left-Right Symmetric models from searches of semileptonic decays of $D$, $D_{s}$, $B$ mesons, mediated by heavy neutrinos $N$ with masses $m_N\sim $ GeV that go on their mass shell leading to a resonant enhancement of the rates. Using these processes we examine, as a function of $m_N$ and $M_{W_R}$, the physics reach of the recently proposed high-intensity beam dump experiment SHiP, which is expected to produce a large sample of $D_s$ mesons. We compare these results with the corresponding reach of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, as well as like-sign dilepton searches with displaced vertices at the LHC. We conclude that the SHiP experiment has clear advantages in probing the Left-Right Symmetric models for heavy neutrinos in the GeV mass range.

Axions in gravity with torsion

We study a scenario allowing a solution of the strong charge parity problem via the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, implemented in gravity with torsion. In this framework there appears a torsion-related pseudoscalar field known as Kalb-Ramond axion. We compare it with the so-called Barbero-Immirzi axion recently proposed in the literature also in the context of the gravity with torsion. We show that they are equivalent from the viewpoint of the effective theory. The phenomenology of these torsion-descended axions is completely determined by the Planck scale without any additional model parameters. These axions are very light and very weakly interacting with ordinary matter. We briefly comment on their astrophysical and cosmological implications in view of the recent BICEP2 and Planck data.

Torsion in Extra Dimensions and One-Loop Observables

We study gravity with torsion in extra dimensions and derive an effective four-dimensional theory containing four-fermion contact operators at the fundamental scale of quantum gravity in the TeV range. These operators may have an impact on the low-energy observables and can manifest themselves or can be constrained in precision measurements. We calculate possible contributions of these operators to some observables at the one-loop level. We show that the existing precision data on the lepton decay mode of Z boson set limits on the fundamental scale of the gravity and compactification radius, which are more stringent than the limits previously derived in the literature.

Updated limits on extra dimensions through torsion and LHC data

It is well known that inclusion of torsion in the gravitational formalism, leads to four-fermion interactions. Although the coupling constant of this interaction is strongly suppressed in four dimensions, its value is enhanced in models with $n$ extra dimensions. In this context, we reinterpret the recent limits established by LHC experiments to four-fermion contact interactions, to set bounds on the size of the extra dimensions. For $n=2$, the limits are comparable to those in the literature, while for $n\ge 3$ the volume of the extra dimensions is strongly constrained.

Fermion Masses Through Condensation in Spacetimes with Torsion

In this paper we argue the possibility that fermion masses, in particular quarks, originate through the condensation of a fourth family that interacts with all of the quarks via a contact four-fermion term coming from the existence of torsion on the spacetime. Extra dimensions are considered to avoid the hierarchy problem.

Higgs Boson Phenomenology in a Simple Model with Vector Resonances

In this paper we consider a simple scenario where the Higgs boson and two vector resonances are supposed to arise from a new strong interacting sector. We use the ATLAS measurements of the dijet spectrum to set limits on the masses of the resonances. Additionally we compute the Higgs boson decay to two photons and found, when compare to the Standard Model prediction, a small excess which is compatible with ATLAS measurements. Finally we make prediction for Higgs-strahlung processes for the LHC running at 14 TeV.

Phenomenological Constraints to Dimensionality of the Spacetime with Torsion

Using the recent limits established by ATLAS to the contact four-fermion interaction, bounds on the size of the extra dimensions of space-time have been found, by assuming that the contact interactions come through the inclusion of torsion in the higher dimensional theory. For two extra dimensions, the limits are comparable to those in the literature, while for higher dimensional space-time, the volume of the extra dimensions is strongly constrained.

Localization of fermions in different domain wall models

Localization of fermions is studied in different gravitational domain wall models. These are generalizations of the brane-world models considered by Randall and Sundrum, but which also allow gravitational localization. Therefore, they might be considered as possible realistic scenarios for phenomenology.

On the localization of fermions on thick D-branes

Hints on the possible localization of fermions on double thick D-branes (Domain Walls) are found by analyzing the moduli space of parameters. Deeper analysis toward this direction might help to select phenomenologically plausible models. A new kind of condition for fermion localization is proposed. This might be useful in multi-brane-world scenarios, which are important when symmetry breaking is considered in the AdS/CFT formalism, as well as in curved brane-worlds.

Localizing gravity on exotic thick 3-branes

We consider localization of gravity on thick branes with a non trivial structure. Double walls that generalize the thick Randall-Sundrum solution, and asymmetric walls that arise from a Z_2-symmetric scalar potential, are considered. We present a new asymmetric solution: a thick brane interpolating between two AdS_5 spacetimes with different cosmological constants, which can be derived from a ``fake supergravity'' superpotential, and show that it is possible to confine gravity on such branes.
