Revisiting ZZ and γZ production with effective field theories

A complete and systematic effective field theory analysis of new physics effects in \bar{f}f -> ZZ and \bar{f}f -> γZ is performed. Results are presented for the different initial and final-state polarized differential cross sections in terms of oblique, gauge-fermion and neutral triple gauge corrections (nTGC). Phenomenological signatures for new physics detection at the LHC and at future linear colliders are discussed. In comparison to WW production, they follow a completely different pattern: nTGC only appear at NNLO in the effective field theory expansion and, accordingly, are extremely suppressed. However, in the high energy regime, v << \sqrt{s} << 3 TeV, nTGC are shown to neatly dominate the longitudinal-transversal final-state polarizations over the standard model background. Their tiny effects get hugely amplified at energies \sqrt{s} (0.6-1) TeV and can easily generate up to 20% deviations over the standard model predictions.

Effective Theory of a Dynamically Broken Electroweak Standard Model at NLO

We consider the Standard Model as an effective theory at the weak scale $v$ of a generic new strong interaction that dynamically breaks electroweak symmetry at the energy scale $Λ\sim $ (few) TeV. Assuming only the minimal field content with the Standard Model fermions and gauge bosons, but without a light Higgs particle, we construct the complete Lagrangian through next-to-leading order, that is, including terms of order $v^2/Λ^2$. The systematics behind this expansion is clarified. Although similar to chiral perturbation theory, it is not governed by the dimension of operators alone, but depends in an essential way on the loop expansion. Power-counting formulas are derived that indicate the classes of operators required at the next-to-leading order. The complete set of operators at leading and next-to-leading order is then listed, based on the restrictions implied by the Standard-Model gauge symmetries. We recover the well-known operators discussed in the literature in connection with the electroweak chiral Lagrangian and in similar contexts, but we collect a complete and systematic list of all terms through order $v^2/Λ^2$. This includes some operators not discussed in explicit terms before. We also show that a few of the previously considered operators can be eliminated via the equations of motion. As another important result we confirm the known list of dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model with an elementary Higgs doublet, essentially as a special case of our scenario.

ElectroWeak Precision Observables at One-Loop in Higgsless models

We study the viability of generic Higgsless models at low energies when compliance with EWPO and unitarity constraints up to the TeV scale are imposed. Our analysis shows that consistency with S and T can be achieved at the one-loop level even with a single light vector state, m_V <= 500 GeV. However, this scenario turns out to be strongly disfavored when direct resonance searches at the Tevatron are also taken into account. We show that a fully consistent picture can be obtained if an axial state is introduced. Interestingly, m_V is still predicted to be light (below 1 TeV) while typical values of m_A span over the window 1.2 m_V <= m_A <= 1.4 m_V. Our results for the vector channel are rather robust and well within the reach of present-day colliders, while the axial channel is more loosely constrained.

K^+ -> pi^+pi^0e^+e^-: a novel short-distance probe

We study the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 e^+ e^-, currently under analysis by the NA62 Collaboration at CERN. In particular, we provide a detailed analysis of the Dalitz plot for the long-distance, gamma^*-mediated, contributions (Bremsstrahlung, direct emission and its interference). We also examine a set of asymmetries to isolate genuine short-distance effects. While we show that charge asymmetries are not required to test short distances, they provide the best environment for its detection. This constitutes by itself a strong motivation for NA62 to study K^- decays in the future. We therefore provide a detailed study of different charge asymmetries and the corresponding estimated signals. Whenever possible, we make contact with the related processes K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 gamma and K_L -> pi^+ pi^- e^+ e^- and discuss the advantages of K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 e^+ e^- over them.

A new determination of α_s from hadronic τ decays

We present a new framework for the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic τdecays through finite-energy sum rules. Our focus is on the small, but still significant non-perturbative effects that, in principle, affect both the central value and the systematic error. We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. For comparison, the original OPAL analysis of the same data led to the values 0.324+-0.014 (fixed-order) and 0.348+-0.021 (contour-improved).

A holographic approach to low-energy weak interactions of hadrons

We apply the double-trace formalism to incorporate nonleptonic weak interactions of hadrons into holographic models of the strong interactions. We focus our attention upon $ΔS=1$ nonleptonic kaon decays. By working with a Yang-Mills--Chern-Simons 5-dimensional action, we explicitly show how, at low energies, one recovers the $ΔS=1$ weak chiral Lagrangian for both the anomalous and nonanomalous sectors. We provide definite predictions for the low energy coefficients in terms of the AdS metric and argue that the double-trace formalism is a 5-dimensional avatar of the Weak Deformation Model introduced long ago by Ecker et al. As a significant phenomenological application, we reassess the $K\to 3π$ decays in the light of the holographic model. Previous models found a fine-tuned cancellation of resonance exchange in these decays, which was both conceptually puzzling and quantitatively in disagreement with experimental results. The holographic model we build is an illustrative counterexample showing that the cancellation encountered in the literature is not generic but a model-dependent statement and that agreement with experiment can be obtained.

The hadronic light by light contribution to the $(g-2)_μ$ with holographic models of QCD

We study the anomalous electromagnetic pion form factor $F_{π^0γ^*γ^*}$ with a set of holographic models. By comparing with the measured value of the linear slope, some of these models can be ruled out. From the remaining models we obtain predictions for the low-energy quadratic slope parameters of $F_{π^0γ^*γ^*}$, currently out of experimental reach but testable in the near future. We find it particularly useful to encode this low-energy information in a form factor able to satisfy also QCD short-distance constraints. We choose the form factor introduced by D'Ambrosio, Isidori and Portoles in kaon decays, which has the right short distance for a particular value of the quadratic slope, which is later shown to be compatible with our holographic predictions. We then turn to a determination of the (dominant) pion exchange diagram in the hadronic light by light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We quantify the theoretical uncertainty in $(g-2)_μ$ coming from the different input we use: QCD short distances, experimental input and low-energy holographic predictions. We also test the pion-pole approximation. Our final result is $a_μ^{π^0}=6.54(25)\cdot 10^{-10}$, where the error is driven by the linear slope of $F_{π^0γ^*γ^*}$, soon to be measured with precision at KLOE-2. Our numerical analysis also indicates that large values of the magnetic susceptibility $χ_0$ are disfavored, therefore pointing at a mild effect from the pion off-shellness. However, in the absence of stronger bounds on $χ_0$, an additional $(10-15)%$ systematic uncertainty on the previous value for $a_μ^{π^0}$ cannot be excluded.

Antisymmetric tensors in holographic approaches to QCD

We study real (massive) antisymmetric tensors of rank two in holographic models of QCD based on the gauge/string duality. Our aim is to understand in detail how the AdS/CFT correspondence describes correlators with tensor currents in QCD. To this end we study a set of bootstrapped correlators with spin-1 vector and tensor currents, imposing matching to QCD at the partonic level. We show that a consistent description of this set of correlators yields a very predictive picture. For instance, it imposes strong constraints on infrared boundary conditions and precludes the introduction of dilatonic backgrounds as a mechanism to achieve linear confinement. Additionally, correlators with tensor currents turn out to be especially sensitive to chiral symmetry breaking, thus offering an ideal testing ground for genuine QCD effects. Several phenomenological consequences are explored, such as the nontrivial interplay between $1^{+-}$ states and conventional $1^{--}$ vector mesons.

Padé approximants and the prediction of non-perturbative parameters in particle physics

Commonly used techniques to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interactions have a deep connection with rational approximants, and in particular with Padé approximants to meromorphic functions. However, only recently this connection has been acknowledged and efforts at fully exploiting it are only starting. In this article I will briefly review the most prominent techniques used in non-perturbative strong interactions with special emphasis on its relation with Padé approximants. I will then concentrate on a set of open problems outside the scope of these conventional techniques where Padé approximants might be extremely useful.

Chiral corrections to the f_V^T/f_V ratio for vector mesons

In this letter we compute the leading chiral corrections to the ratio between the tensor and the vector decay couplings for the lowest lying vector meson multiplet (rho, K^*, phi). We show that the leading chiral logarithms arise from tadpole contributions and are therefore entirely fixed by chiral symmetry, while the next to leading corrections are purely analytic. Interestingly, the flavour structure of the chiral logarithms implies that only the rho meson is sensitive to pion logarithms. By examining SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_S theories we show that this result can be easily understood and that it holds to all orders in the m_s expansion. Recent lattice data seem to comply with our results.

Drell-Yan production of Heavy Vectors in Higgsless models

We study the Drell-Yan production of heavy vector and axial-vector states of generic Higgsless models at hadron colliders. We analyse in particular the l+l-, WZ, and three SM gauge boson final states. In the l+l- case we show how present Tevatron data restricts the allowed parameter space of these models. The two and three gauge boson final states (especially WZ, WWZ, and WZZ) are particularly interesting in view of the LHC, especially for light axial-vector masses, and could shed more light on the role of spin-1 resonances in the electroweak precision tests.

Possible duality violations in tau decay and their impact on the determination of alpha_s

We discuss the issue of duality violations in hadronic tau decay. After introducing a physically motivated ansatz for duality violations, we estimate their possible size by fitting this ansatz to the tau experimental data provided by the ALEPH collaboration. Our conclusion is that these data do not exclude significant duality violations in tau decay. This may imply an additional systematic error in the value of alpha_s(m_tau), extracted from tau decay, as large as δalpha_s(m_tau) \sim 0.003-0.010 .

Estimate of the systematic error in tau decay due to duality violations

With the help of a physically motivated ansatz, which is fitted to the data, we estimate the size of possible duality violations in hadronic tau decay. The result is that the uncertainty associated with these violations could impact the alpha_s determination from the total decay width at a level which we estimate to be δalpha_s(m_tau) \sim 0.003-0.010. Consequently, it cannot be neglected.

On different ways to quantize Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

Collinear fields in soft collinear effective theory (SCET) can be made invariant under collinear gauge transformations by multiplying them with collinear Wilson lines. We discuss how we can quantize SCET directly in terms of these gauge invariant fields, allowing to directly calculate S matrix elements using the gauge invariant collinear fields. We also show how for each collinear direction SCET can be written in terms of fields whose interactions are given by the usual QCD Lagrangian, and how external operators coupling these different directions can be constructed.

Unraveling duality violations in hadronic tau decays

There are some indications from recent determinations of the strong coupling constant alpha_s and the gluon condensate that the Operator Product Expansion may not be accurate enough to describe non-perturbative effects in hadronic tau decays. This breakdown of the Operator Product Expansion is usually referred to as being due to ``Duality Violations.'' With the help of a physically motivated model, we investigate these duality violations. Based on this model, we argue how they may introduce a non-negligible systematic error in the current analysis, which employs finite-energy sum rules with pinched weights. In particular, this systematic effect might affect the precision determination of alpha_s from tau decays. With a view to a possible future application to real data, we present an alternative method for determining the OPE coefficients that might help estimating, and possibly even reducing, this systematic error.

Chiral Perturbation Theory with tensor sources

We construct the most general chirally-invariant Lagrangian for mesons in the presence of external sources coupled to the tensor current \barψσ_{μν}ψ. In order to have only even terms in the chiral expansion, we consider the new source of O(p^2). With this choice, we build the even-parity effective Lagrangian up to the p^6-order (NLO). While there are only 4 new terms at the p^4-order, at p^6-order we find 78 terms for n_f=2 and 113 terms for n_f=3. We provide a detailed discussion on the different mechanisms that ensure that our final set of operators is complete and non-redundant. We also examine the odd-parity sector, to conclude that the first operators appear at the p^8-order (NNLO).

Towards understanding Regge trajectories in holographic QCD

We reassess a work done by Migdal on the spectrum of low-energy vector mesons in QCD in the light of the AdS-QCD correspondence. Recently, a tantalizing parallelism was suggested between Migdal's work and a family of holographic duals of QCD. Despite the intriguing similarities, both approaches face a major drawback: the spectrum is in conflict with well-tested Regge scaling. However, it has recently been shown that holographic duals can be modified to accomodate Regge behavior. Therefore, it is interesting to understand whether Regge behavior can also be achieved in Migdal's approach. In this paper we investigate this issue. We find that Migdal's approach, which is based on a modified Pade approximant, is closely related to the issue of quark-hadron duality breakdown in QCD.
