Tinkertoys for the $E_8$ Theory

We construct the 4D N=2 SCFTs of class-S, which stem from the $E_8$ (2,0) theory. There are 49,836 isolated SCFTs which arise as 3-punctured spheres. Of these, 149 are "mixed" (contain free hypermultiplets accompanying the interacting SCFT) and 775 have enhanced global symmetries (beyond the manifest global symmetry associated to the punctures). Among the 49,836 3-punctured spheres we find (after removing any free hypermultiplets which may be present) 29 that are product SCFTs. Turning to 4-punctured spheres, we find 1,025,438 4D SCFTs arising as a gauging (with a simple gauge group) of a pair of 3-punctured spheres. We discuss a number of applications, including recovering several known 4D SCFTs. Our full set of results can be accessed on the Web at https://golem.ph.utexas.edu/class-S/E8/ .

Tinkertoys for the E7 Theory

We classify the class $S$ theories of type $E_7$. These are four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising from the compactification of the $E_7$ $(2,0)$ theory on a punctured Riemann surface, $C$. The classification is given by listing all 3-punctured spheres ("fixtures"), and connecting cylinders, which can arise in a pants-decomposition of $C$. We find exactly 11,000 fixtures with three regular punctures, and an additional 48 with one "irregular puncture" (in the sense used in our previous works). To organize this large number of theories, we have created a web application at https://golem.ph.utexas.edu/class-S/E7/ . Among these theories, we find 10 new ones with a simple exceptional global symmetry group, as well as a new rank-2 SCFT and several new rank-3 SCFTs. As an application, we study the strong-coupling limit of the $E_7$ gauge theory with 3 hypermultiplets in the $56$. Using our results, we also verify recent conjectures that the $T^2$ compactification of certain $6d$ $(1,0)$ theories can alternatively be realized in class $S$ as fixtures in the $E_7$ or $E_8$ theories.

Tinkertoys for the Z3-twisted D4 Theory

Among the simple Lie algebras, $D_4$ is distinguished as the unique one whose group of outer-automorphisms is bigger than $\mathbb{Z}_2$. We study the compactifications of the $D_4$ (2,0) Theory on a punctured Riemann surface, $C$, with outer-automorphism twists around cycles of $C$ lying in $\mathbb{Z}_3\subset \text{Aut}(D_4)= S_3$. The resulting 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs have a number of new and interesting properties. As byproduct, we discover a new rank-1 $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT with flavour symmetry group $SU(4)$.

Tinkertoys for the Twisted $E_6$ Theory

We study $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that arise as the compactification of the six-dimensional $(2,0)$ theory of type $E_6$ on a punctured Riemann surface in the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ outer-automorphism twists. We explicitly carry out the classification of these theories in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, and provide tables of properties of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted punctures. An expression is given for the superconformal index of a fixture with twisted punctures of type $E_6$, which we use to check our identifications. Several of our fixtures have Higgs branches which are isomorphic to instanton moduli spaces, and we find that S-dualities involving these fixtures imply interesting isomorphisms between hyperKähler quotients of these spaces. Additionally, we find families of fixtures for which the Sommers-Achar group, which was previously a Coulomb branch concept, acts non-trivially on the Higgs branch operators.

A Family of $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ Interacting SCFTs from the Twisted $A_{2N}$ Series

We find an infinite family of $4D$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ interacting superconformal field theories which enter the description of the strong-coupling limit of $SU(2N+1)$ gauge theories with hypermultiplets in the $\wedge^2(\square)+\text{Sym}^2(\square)$ . These theories arise from the compactification of the $6D$ $(2,0)$ theory of type $A_{2N}$ on a sphere with two full twisted punctures and one minimal untwisted puncture. For $N=1$, this theory is the "new" rank-1 SCFT with $Δ(u)=3$ of Argyres and Wittig. Using the superconformal index, we finally pin down the properties of this theory.

Seiberg-Witten for $Spin(n)$ with Spinors

$\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $Spin(n)$ gauge theory admits hypermultiplets in spinor representations of the gauge group, compatible with $β\leq0$, for $n\leq 14$. The theories with $β<0$ can be obtained as mass-deformations of the $β=0$ theories, so it is of greatest interest to construct the $β=0$ theories. In previous works, we discussed the $n\leq8$ theories. Here, we turn to the $9\leq n\leq 14$ cases. By compactifying the $D_N$ (2,0) theory on a 4-punctured sphere, we find Seiberg-Witten solutions to almost all of the remaining cases. There are five theories, however, which do not seem to admit a realization from six dimensions.

Tinkertoys for the $E_6$ Theory

Compactifying the 6-dimensional (2,0) superconformal field theory, of type ADE, on a Riemann surface, $C$, with codimension-2 defect operators at points on $C$, yields a 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theory. An outstanding problem is to classify the 4D theories one obtains, in this way, and to understand their properties. In this paper, we turn our attention to the $E_6$ (2,0) theory, which (unlike the A- and D-series) has no realization in terms of M5-branes. Classifying the 4D theories amounts to classifying all of the 3-punctured spheres ("fixtures"), and the cylinders that connect them, that can occur in a pants-decomposition of $C$. We find 904 fixtures: 19 corresponding to free hypermultiplets, 825 corresponding to isolated interacting SCFTs (with no known Lagrangian description) and 60 "mixed fixtures", corresponding to a combination of free hypermultiplets and an interacting SCFT. Of the 825 interacting fixtures, we list only the 139 "interesting" ones. As an application, we study the strong coupling limits of the Lagrangian field theories: $E_6$ with 4 hypermultiplets in the $27$ and $F_4$ with 3 hypermultiplets in the $26$.

Tinkertoys for the D_N series

We describe a procedure for classifying 4D N=2 superconformal theories of the type introduced by Davide Gaiotto. Any punctured curve, C, on which the 6D (2,0) SCFT is compactified, may be decomposed into 3-punctured spheres, connected by cylinders. The 4D theories, which arise, can be characterized by listing the "matter" theories corresponding to 3-punctured spheres, the simple gauge group factors, corresponding to cylinders, and the rules for connecting these ingredients together. Different pants decompositions of $ correspond to different S-duality frames for the same underlying family of 4D N=2 SCFTs. In a previous work [1], we developed such a classification for the A_{N-1} series of 6D (2,0) theories. In the present paper, we extend this to the D_N series. We outline the procedure for general D_N, and construct, in detail, the classification through D_4. We discuss the implications for S-duality in Spin(8) and Spin(7) gauge theory, and recover many of the dualities conjectured by Argyres and Wittig [2].

Tinkertoys for the Twisted D-Series

We study 4D N=2 superconformal field theories that arise from the compactification of 6D N=(2,0) theories of type D_N on a Riemann surface, in the presence of punctures twisted by a Z_2 outer automorphism. Unlike the untwisted case, the family of SCFTs is in general parametrized, not by M_{g,n}, but by a branched cover thereof. The classification of these SCFTs is carried out explicitly in the case of the D_4 theory, in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, and we provide tables of properties of twisted punctures for the D_5 and D_6 theories. We find realizations of Spin(8) and Spin(7) gauge theories with matter in all combinations of vector and spinor representations with vanishing beta-function, as well as Sp(3) gauge theories with matter in the 3-index traceless antisymmetric representation.

Gaiotto Duality for the Twisted A_{2N-1} Series

We study 4D N=2 superconformal theories that arise from the compactification of 6D N=(2,0) theories of type A_{2N-1} on a Riemann surface C, in the presence of punctures twisted by a Z_2 outer automorphism. We describe how to do a complete classification of these SCFTs in terms of three-punctured spheres and cylinders, which we do explicitly for A_3, and provide tables of properties of twisted defects up through A_9. We find atypical degenerations of Riemann surfaces that do not lead to weakly-coupled gauge groups, but to a gauge coupling pinned at a point in the interior of moduli space. As applications, we study: i) 6D representations of 4D superconformal quivers in the shape of an affine/non-affine D_n Dynkin diagram, ii) S-duality of SU(4) and Sp(2) gauge theories with various combinations of fundamental and antisymmetric matter, and iii) realizations of all rank-one SCFTs predicted by Argyres and Wittig.

Nilpotent orbits and codimension-two defects of 6d N=(2,0) theories

We study the local properties of a class of codimension-2 defects of the 6d N=(2,0) theories of type J=A,D,E labeled by nilpotent orbits of a Lie algebra \mathfrak{g}, where \mathfrak{g} is determined by J and the outer-automorphism twist around the defect. This class is a natural generalisation of the defects of the 6d theory of type SU(N) labeled by a Young diagram with N boxes. For any of these defects, we determine its contribution to the dimension of the Higgs branch, to the Coulomb branch operators and their scaling dimensions, to the 4d central charges a and c, and to the flavour central charge k.

Tinkertoys for Gaiotto Duality

We describe a procedure for classifying N=2 superconformal theories of the type introduced by Davide Gaiotto. Any curve, C, on which the 6D A_{N-1} SCFT is compactified, can be decomposed into 3-punctured spheres, connected by cylinders. We classify the spheres, and the cylinders that connect them. The classification is carried out explicitly, up through N=5, and for several families of SCFTs for arbitrary N. These lead to a wealth of new S-dualities between Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian N=2 SCFTs.
