Finite group actions on Higgs bundle moduli spaces

Let ${\cal M}(X,G)$ be the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a semisimple complex Lie group with centre $Z$. We describe the fixed points of the action of a finite group $Γ$ on ${\cal M}(X,G)$, induced by holomorphic actions of $Γ$ on $X$ and $G$, a character of $Γ$ and a homomorphism from $Γ$ to the group of $Z$-bundles over $X$. Two important ingredients in this study are provided by the theory of twisted $Γ$-equivariant bundles developed by Barajas--García-Prada--Gothen--Mundet i Riera, and the Prym--Narasimhan--Ramanan construction given by Barajas--García-Prada. Via the non-abelian Hodge correspondence, our results provide a description of the fixed-point subvarieties of certain finite group actions on the $G$-character variety of the fundamental group of $X$.

Cyclic Higgs bundles and the Toledo invariant

Let $G$ be a complex semisimple Lie group and $\mathfrak g$ its Lie algebra. In this paper, we study a special class of cyclic Higgs bundles constructed from a $\mathbb Z$-grading $\mathfrak g = \bigoplus_{j=1-m}^{m-1}\mathfrak g_j$ by using the natural representation $G_0 \to GL(\mathfrak g_1 \oplus \mathfrak g_{1-m})$, where $G_0 \le G$ is the connected subgroup corresponding to $\mathfrak g_0$. The resulting Higgs pairs include $G^{\mathbb R}$-Higgs bundles for $G^{\mathbb R} \le G$ a real form of Hermitian type (in the case $m=2$) and fixed points of the ${\mathbb C}^*$-action on $G$-Higgs bundles (in the case where the Higgs field vanishes along $\mathfrak g_{1-m}$). In both of these situations a topological invariant with interesting properties, known as the Toledo invariant, has been defined and studied in the literature. This paper generalises its definition and properties to the case of arbitrary $(G_0,\mathfrak g_1 \oplus \mathfrak g_{1-m})$-Higgs pairs, which give rise to families of cyclic Higgs bundles. The results are applied to the example with $m=3$ that arises from the theory of quaternion-Kähler symmetric spaces.

Universal Hitchin moduli spaces

We study metric aspects of the universal moduli space of solutions to Hitchin's equations as the complex structure $J$ varies over the Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}$ of a closed surface $Σ$. Our approach is gauge theoretical and builds on the theory of Kähler fibrations and the moment map interpretation of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics. Our first main result establishes that, over the moduli space of cscK metrics, the universal moduli space of solutions to Hitchin's equations carries a natural complex structure together with a family of pseudo-Kähler metrics forming a Kähler fibration with a Kähler Ehresmann connection. We then investigate a second universal moduli space, constructed from the space of flat $G$-connections over $\mathcal{T}$, which admits a nontrivial $J$-dependent Kähler fibration structure discovered by Hitchin. Using symplectic reduction, we build universal moduli spaces of solutions to the harmonicity equations depending on a coupling constant $α$, obtaining natural complex and pseudo-Kähler structures and an explicit Kähler potential. The main novelty here is that this moduli space is defined by a system coupling the scalar curvature with a cubic term in the Higgs field. Finally, we propose a conjectural relationship between the two resulting families of moduli spaces in the weak-coupling limit $α\to 0$, inspired by the twistor geometry of Hitchin's hyperkähler moduli space.

Kähler-Yang-Mills Equations and Vortices

The Kähler-Yang-Mills equations are coupled equations for a Kähler metric on a compact complex manifold and a connection on a complex vector bundle over it. After briefly reviewing the main aspects of the geometry of the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations, we consider dimensional reductions of the equations related to vortices - solutions to certain Yang-Mills-Higgs equations.

Intersection cohomology of higher rank Teichmüller components

Exploiting the non-abelian Hodge correspondence, together with the Cayley correspondence, in this paper, we compute the intersection cohomology of certain singular higher rank Teichmüller components of character varieties of the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface.

On the Kähler-Yang-Mills-Higgs equations

In this paper we introduce a set of equations on a principal bundle over a compact complex manifold coupling a connection on the principal bundle, a section of an associated bundle with Kähler fibre, and a Kähler structure on the base. These equations are a generalization of the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations introduced by the authors. They also generalize the constant scalar curvature for a Kähler metric studied by Donaldson and others, as well as the Yang-Mills-Higgs equations studied by Mundet i Riera. We provide a moment map interpretation of the equations, construct some first examples, and study obstructions to the existence of solutions.

SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles and higher Teichmüller components

Some connected components of a moduli space are mundane in the sense that they are distinguished only by obvious topological invariants or have no special characteristics. Others are more alluring and unusual either because they are not detected by primary invariants, or because they have special geometric significance, or both. In this paper we describe new examples of such `exotic' components in moduli spaces of SO(p,q)-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces or, equivalently, moduli spaces of surface group representations into the Lie group SO(p,q). Furthermore, we discuss how these exotic components are related to the notion of positive Anosov representations recently developed by Guichard and Wienhard. We also provide a complete count of the connected components of these moduli spaces (except for SO(2,q), with q> 3).

Higgs bundles, abelian gerbes and cameral data

We study the Hitchin map for $G_{\mathbb{R}}$-Higgs bundles on a smooth curve, where $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is a quasi-split real form of a complex reductive algebraic group $G$. By looking at the moduli stack of regular $G_{\mathbb{R}}$-Higgs bundles, we prove it induces a banded gerbe structure on a slightly larger stack, whose band is given by sheaves of tori. This characterization yields a cocyclic description of the fibres of the corresponding Hitchin map by means of cameral data. According to this, fibres of the Hitchin map are categories of principal torus bundles on the cameral cover. The corresponding points inside the stack of $G$-Higgs bundles are contained in the substack of points fixed by an involution induced by the Cartan involution of $G_{\mathbb{R}}$. We determine this substack of fixed points and prove that stable points are in correspondence with stable $G_{\mathbb{R}}$-Higgs bundles.

Higgs bundles and higher Teichmüller spaces

This paper is a survey on the role of Higgs bundle theory in the study of higher Teichmüller spaces. Recall that the Teichmüller space of a compact surface can be identified with a certain connected component of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface into $\mathrm{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})$. Higher Teichmüller spaces correspond to special components of the moduli space of representations when one replaces $\mathrm{PSL}(2,{\mathbb{R}})$ by a real non-compact semisimple Lie group of higher rank. Examples of these spaces are provided by the Hitchin components for split real groups, and maximal Toledo invariant components for groups of Hermitian type. More recently, the existence of such components has been proved for $\mathrm{SO}(p,q)$, in agreement with the conjecture of Guichard and Wienhard relating the existence of higher Teichmüller spaces to a certain notion of positivity on a Lie group that they have introduced. We review these three different situations, and end up explaining briefly the conjectural general picture from the point of view of Higgs bundle theory.

Principal co-Higgs bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$

For complex connected, reductive, affine, algebraic groups $G$, we give a Lie-theoretic characterization of the semistability of principal $G$-co-Higgs bundles on the complex projective line $\mathbb{P}^1$ in terms of the simple roots of a Borel subgroup of $G$. We describe a stratification of the moduli space in terms of the Harder-Narasimhan type of the underlying bundle.

Gravitating vortices and the Einstein--Bogomol'nyi equations

In this work we consider the gravitating vortex equations. These equations couple a metric over a compact Riemann surface with a hermitian metric over a holomorphic line bundle equipped with a fixed global section --- the Higgs field ---, and have a symplectic interpretation as moment-map equations. As a particular case of the gravitating vortex equations on $\mathbb{P}^1$, we find the Einstein--Bogomol'nyi equations, previously studied in the theory of cosmic strings in physics. We prove two main results in this paper. Our first main result gives a converse to an existence theorem of Y. Yang for the Einstein--Bogomol'nyi equations, establishing in this way a correspondence with Geometric Invariant Theory for these equations. In particular, we prove a conjecture by Y. Yang about the non-existence of cosmic strings on $\mathbb{P}^1$ superimposed at a single point. Our second main result is an existence and uniqueness result for the gravitating vortex equations in genus greater than one.

Higgs bundles, branes and Langlands duality

Given a compact Riemann surface $X$ and a complex reductive Lie group $G$ equipped with real structures, we define antiholomorphic involutions on the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$. We investigate how the various components of the fixed point locus match up, as one passes from $G$ to its Langlands dual $^LG$. Special attention is given to the case $G=SL(2,\C)$ and $^LG=PGL(2,\C)$.

Maximal Higgs bundles for adjoint forms via Cayley correspondence

For a fixed compact Riemann surface X, of genus at least 2, we count the number of connected components of the moduli space of maximal Higgs bundles over X for the hermitian groups $PSp(2n,R)$, $PSO^*(2n)$, $PSO_0(2,n)$ and $E_6^{-14}$. Hence the same result follows for the number of connected components of the moduli space of maximal representations of $π_1X$ in these groups. We use the Cayley correspondence proved in [3] as our main tool.

A Tannakian approach to dimensional reduction of principal bundles

Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup of a connected simply connected complex semisimple Lie group $G$. Given a compact Kähler manifold $X$, the dimensional reduction of $G$-equivariant holomorphic vector bundles over $X\times G/P$ was carried out by the first and third authors. This raises the question of dimensional reduction of holomorphic principal bundles over $X\times G/P$. The method used for equivariant vector bundles does not generalize to principal bundles. In this paper, we adapt to equivariant principal bundles the Tannakian approach of Nori, to describe the dimensional reduction of $G$-equivariant principal bundles over $X\times G/P$, and to establish a Hitchin--Kobayashi type correspondence. In order to be able to apply the Tannakian theory, we need to assume that $X$ is a complex projective manifold.

Involutions of the moduli spaces of $G$-Higgs bundles over elliptic curves

We present a systematic study of involutions on the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over an elliptic curve $X$, where $G$ is complex reductive affine algebraic group. The fixed point loci in the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles on $X$, and in the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of $X$ into $G$, are described. This leads to an explicit description of the moduli spaces of pseudo-real $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$.

Gravitating vortices, cosmic strings, and the Kähler--Yang--Mills equations

In this paper we construct new solutions of the Kahler-Yang-Mills equations, by applying dimensional reduction methods to the product of the complex projective line with a compact Riemann surface. The resulting equations, that we call gravitating vortex equations, describe Abelian vortices on the Riemann surface with back reaction of the metric. As a particular case of these gravitating vortices on the Riemann sphere we find solutions of the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, which physically correspond to Nielsen-Olesen cosmic strings in the Bogomol'nyi phase. We use this to provide a Geometric Invariant Theory interpretation of an existence result by Y. Yang for the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, applying a criterion due to G. Szekelyhidi.
