Solutions of the spray flamelet equations in a non-monotonic mixture fraction space

Solving the spray flamelet equations in composition space is very challenging, which is attributable to the fact that the maximum value of the mixture fraction, $Z_\mathrm{max}$, is a priori unknown in such flames. In this work, an analytical solution for this quantity is proposed, which allows its determination in spray flames subject to imposed quadratic evaporation profiles. It is then illustrated how the proposed approach allows to effectively cover the solution space of the spray flamelet equations. The employed strategy works very well for the considered cases and the generality of the evaporation profile definition provides flexibility for explorations of other parametric choices in the future.

Cosmological Solutions in Polynomial Affine Gravity with Torsion

The Polynomial Affine Gravity is an alternative gravitational model, where the interactions are mediated solely by the affine connection, instead of the metric tensor. In this paper, we explore the space of solutions to the field equations when the torsion fields are turned on, in a homogeneous and isotropic (cosmological) scenario. We explore various metric structures that emerge in the space of solutions.

Marx after Okishio: Falling Rate of Profit with Constant Rate of Exploitation

Can cost-reducing technical change lead to a fall in the long run rate of profit if class struggle manages to keep the rate of exploitation constant? In a general circulating capital model, we derive sufficient conditions for cost-reducing technical change to both keep the rate of exploitation constant and lead to a fall in the equilibrium rate of profit. Further, if the real wage bundle is such that the maximum price-value ratio is larger than 1 plus the rate of exploitation, then starting from any configuration of technology and real wage, we can always find a viable, CU-LS technical change that satisfies the sufficient conditions for the previous result. Taken together, these results vindicate Marx's claim in Volume III of Capital, that if the rate of exploitation remains unchanged then viable, CU-LS technical change in capitalist economies can lead to a fall in the long run rate of profit.

Polynomial affine model of gravity in three-dimensions

In this work, we explore a three-dimensional formulation of the polynomial affine model of gravity, which is a model that extends general relativity by relaxing the equivalence principle through the exclusion of the metric from the set of fundamental fields. In particular, in an attempt to gain insight of the role of the torsion and nonmetricity in the gravitational models, we consider homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models, for which their solutions are classified in a \emph{decisions tree}. We also show a few of these explicit solutions that allow the definition of (alternative/emergent) metrics derived from the connection.

Aspects of the polynomial affine model of gravity in three dimensions

The polynomial affine gravity is a model that is built up without the explicit use of a metric tensor field. In this article we reformulate the three-dimensional model and, given the decomposition of the affine connection, we analyse the consistently truncated sectors. Using the cosmological ansatz for the connection, we scan the cosmological solutions on the truncated sectors. We discuss the emergence of different kinds of metrics.

pQCD running couplings finite and monotonic in the infrared: when do they reflect the holomorphic properties of spacelike observables?

We investigate a large class of perturbative QCD (pQCD) renormalization schemes whose beta functions $β(a)$ are meromorphic functions of the running coupling and give finite positive value of the coupling $a(Q^2)$ in the infrared regime ("freezing"), $a(Q^2) \to a_0$ for $Q^2 \to 0$. Such couplings automatically have no singularities on the positive axis of the squared momenta $Q^2$ ($ \equiv -q^2$). Explicit integration of the renormalization group equation (RGE) leads to the implicit (inverted) solution for the coupling, of the form $\ln (Q^2/Q^2_{\rm in}) = {\cal H}(a)$. An analysis of this solution leads us to an algebraic algorithm for the search of the Landau singularities of $a(Q^2)$ on the first Riemann sheet of the complex $Q^2$-plane, i.e., poles and branching points (with cuts) outside the negative semiaxis. We present specific representative examples of the use of such algorithm, and compare the found Landau singularities with those seen after the 2-dimensional numerical integration of the RGE in the entire first Riemann sheet, where the latter approach is numerically demanding and may not always be precise. The specific examples suggest that the presented algebraic approach is useful to find out whether the running pQCD coupling has Landau singularities and, if yes, where precisely these singularities are.

Emergent metric and geodesic analysis in cosmological solutions of (torsion-free) Polynomial Affine Gravity

Starting from an affinely connected space, we consider a model of gravity whose fundamental field is the connection. We build up the action using as sole premise the invariance under diffeomorphisms, and study the consequences of a cosmological ansatz for the affine connection in the torsion-free sector. Although the model is built without requiring a metric, we show that the nondegenerated Ricci curvature of the affine connection can be interpreted as an \emph{emergent} metric on the manifold. We show that there exists a parametrization in which the \((r,φ)\)-restriction of the geodesics coincides with that of the Friedman--Robertson--Walker model. Additionally, for connections with nondegenerated Ricci we are able to distinguish between space-, time- and null-like self-parallel curves, providing a way to differentiate \emph{trajectories} of massive and massless particles.

Cosmological solutions to polynomial affine gravity in the torsion-free sector

We find possible cosmological models of the Polynomial Affine Gravity described by connections that are either compatible or not with a metric. When possible, we compare them with those of General Relativity. We show that the set of cosmological vacuum solutions in General Relativity are a subset of the solutions of Polynomial Affine Gravity. In our model the cosmological constant appears as an integration constant, and additionally, we show that some forms of matter can be emulated by the affine structure---even in the metric compatible case. In the case of connections not compatible with a metric, we obtain formal families of solutions, which should be constrained by physical arguments. We show that for a certain parametrisation of the connection, the affine Ricci flat condition yield the cosmological field equations of General Relativity coupled with a perfect fluid, pointing toward a geometrical emulation of---what is interpreted in General Relativity as---matter effects.

Perturbative QCD in acceptable schemes with holomorphic coupling

Perturbative QCD in mass independent schemes leads in general to running coupling $a(Q^2)$ which is nonanalytic (nonholomorphic) in the regime of low spacelike momenta $|Q^2| \lesssim 1 \ {\rm GeV}^2$. Such (Landau) singularities are inconvenient in the following sense: evaluations of spacelike physical quantities ${\cal D}(Q^2)$ with such a running coupling $a(κQ^2)$ ($κ\sim 1$) give us expressions with the same kind of singularities, while the general principles of local quantum field theory require that the mentioned physical quantities have no such singularities. In a previous work, certain classes of perturbative mass independent beta functions were found such that the resulting coupling was holomorphic. However, the resulting perturbation series showed explosive increase of coefficients already at ${\rm N}^4{\rm LO}$ order, as a consequence of the requirement that the theory reproduce the correct value of the $τ$ lepton semihadronic strangeless decay ratio $r_τ$. In this work we successfully extend the construction to specific classes of perturbative beta functions such that the perturbation series do not show explosive increase of coefficients, the perturbative coupling is holomorphic, and the correct value of $r_τ$ is reproduced. In addition, we extract, with Borel sum rule analysis of the V+A channel of the semihadronic strangeless decays of $τ$ lepton, reasonable values of the corresponding D=4 and D=6 condensates.

On a three-layer Hele-Shaw model of enhanced oil recovery with a linear viscous profile

We present a non-standard eigenvalue problem that arises in the linear stability of a three-layer Hele-Shaw model of enhanced oil recovery. A nonlinear transformation is introduced which allows reformulation of the non-standard eigenvalue problem as a boundary value problem for Kummer's equation when the viscous profile of the middle layer is linear. Using the existing body of works on Kummer's equation, we construct an exact solution of the eigenvalue problem and provide the dispersion relation implicitly through the existence criterion for the non-trivial solution. We also discuss the convergence of the series solution. It is shown that this solution reduces to the physically relevant solutions in two asymptotic limits: (i) when the linear viscous profile approaches a constant viscous profile; or (ii) when the length of the middle layer approaches zero.

Non-self adjoint Sturm-Liouville problem with spectral and physical parameters in boundary conditions

We present a complete description on the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the following two point boundary value problem $$(p(x)f')'-(q(x)-λr(x))f=0\;, \;\; 0 0$ and $β_{1}<0$, where neither self adjoint operator theorems on Hilbert spaces nor Sturm's comparison results can be used directly. We describe the spectrum and the oscillatory results of the eigenfunctions from a geometrical approach, using a function related to the Prüfer angle. The proofs of the asymptotic results of the eigenvalues and separation theorem of the eigenfunctions are developed through classical second order differential equation tools. Finally, the results on the spectrum of the equation are used for the study of the linear instability of a simple model for the fingering phenomenon on the flooding oil recovery process.
