Anatomy of Z2 fluxes in anyon Fermi liquids and Bose condensates

We study in detail the properties of pi-fluxes embedded in a state with a finite density of anyons that form either a Fermi liquid or a Bose-Einstein condensate. By employing a recently developed exact lattice bosonization in 2D, we demonstrate that such pi-flux remains a fully deconfined quasiparticle with a finite energy cost in a Fermi liquid of emergent fermions coupled to a Z2 gauge field. This pi-flux is accompanied by a screening cloud of fermions, which in the case of a Fermi gas with a parabolic dispersion binds exactly 1/8 of a fermionic hole. In addition there is a long-ranged power-law oscillatory disturbance of the liquid surrounding the pi-flux akin to Friedel oscillations. These results carry over directly to the pi-flux excitations in orthogonal metals. In sharp contrast, when the pi-flux is surrounded by a Bose-Einstein condensate of particles coupled to a Z2 gauge field, it binds a superfluid half-vortex, becoming a marginally confined excitation with a logarithmic energy cost divergence.

Computing observables without eigenstates: applications to Bloch Hamiltonians

Calculating the observables of a Hamiltonian requires taking matrix elements of operators in the eigenstate basis. Since eigenstates are only defined up to arbitrary phases that depend on Hamiltonian parameters, analytical expressions for observables are often difficult to simplify. In this work, we show how for small Hilbert space dimension N all observables can be expressed in terms of the Hamiltonian and its eigenvalues using the properties of the SU(N) algebra, and we derive explicit expressions for N=2,3,4. Then we present multiple applications specializing to the case of Bloch electrons in crystals, including the computation of Berry curvature, quantum metric and orbital moment, as well as a more complex observable in non-linear response, the linear photogalvanic effect (LPGE). As a physical example we consider multiband Hamiltonians with nodal degeneracies to show first how constraints between these observables are relaxed when going from two to three-band models, and second how quadratic dispersion can lead to constant LPGE at small frequencies.

Quantization in chiral higher order topological insulators: circular dichroism and local Chern marker

The robust quantization of observables in units of universal constants is a hallmark of topological phases. We show that chiral higher order topological insulators (HOTIs), bulk insulators with chiral hinge states, present two unusual features related to quantization. First, we show that circular dichroism is quantized to an integer or zero depending on the orientation of the sample. This probe locates the hinge states, and can be used to distinguish different types of chiral HOTIs. Second, we find that the average of the local Chern marker over a single surface, an observable related to the surface Hall conductivity known to be quantized in the infinite slab geometry, is nonuniversal for a finite surface. This is due to a nonuniversal contribution of the hinge states, previously unaccounted for, that distinguishes surfaces of chiral HOTIs from Chern insulators. Our findings are relevant to establish higher order topology in systems such as the axion insulator candidate EuIn$_2$As$_2$, and cold atomic realizations.

Anisotropic fixed points in Dirac and Weyl semimetals

The effective low energy description of interacting Dirac and Weyl semimetals is that of massless quantum electrodynamics with several Lorentz breaking material parameters. We perform a renormalization group analysis of Coulomb interaction in anisotropic Dirac and Weyl semimetals and show that the anisotropy persists in the material systems at the infrared fixed point. In addition, a tilt of the fermion cones breaking inversion symmetry induces a magnetoelectric term in the electrodynamics of the material whose magnitude runs to match that of the electronic tilt at the fixed point.
