Operations on stable moduli spaces

We construct certain operations on stable moduli spaces and use them to compare cohomology of moduli spaces of closed manifolds with tangential structure. We obtain isomorphisms in a stable range provided the $p$-adic valuation of the Euler characteristics agree, for all primes $p$ not invertible in the coefficients for cohomology.

A vanishing theorem for tautological classes of aspherical manifolds

Tautological classes, or generalised Miller-Morita-Mumford classes, are basic characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles, and have recently been used to describe the rational cohomology of classifying spaces of diffeomorphism groups for several types of manifolds. We show that rationally tautological classes depend only on the underlying topological block bundle, and use this to prove the vanishing of tautological classes for many bundles with fibre an aspherical manifold.

Homological stability for moduli spaces of high dimensional manifolds. I

We prove a homological stability theorem for moduli spaces of simply-connected manifolds of dimension $2n > 4$, with respect to forming connected sum with $S^n \times S^n$. This is analogous to Harer's stability theorem for the homology of mapping class groups. Combined with previous work of the authors, it gives a calculation of the homology of the moduli spaces of manifolds diffeomorphic to connected sums of $S^n \times S^n$ in a range of degrees.

Homology of Hurwitz spaces and the Cohen--Lenstra heuristic for function fields (after Ellenberg, Venkatesh, and Westerland)

Ellenberg, Venkatesh, and Westerland have established a weak form of the function field analogue of the Cohen--Lenstra heuristic, on the distribution of imaginary number fields with $\ell$-parts of their class groups isomorphic to a fixed group. They first explain how this follows from an asymptotic point count for certain Hurwitz schemes, and then establish this asymptotic by using the Grothendieck--Lefschetz trace formula to translate it into a difficult homological stability problem in algebraic topology, which they nonetheless solve. These are the notes accompanying my talk at the Séminaire Bourbaki, which focus on the remarkable homological stability theorem for Hurwitz spaces.

$E_2$-cells and mapping class groups

We prove a new kind of stabilisation result, "secondary homological stability", for the homology of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one boundary component. These results are obtained by constructing CW approximations to the classifying spaces of these groups, in the category of $E_2$-algebras, which have no $E_2$-cells below a certain vanishing line.

Moduli spaces of manifolds: a user's guide

We survey recent work on moduli spaces of manifolds with an emphasis on the role played by (stable and unstable) homotopy theory. The theory is illustrated with several worked examples.

Some phenomena in tautological rings of manifolds

We prove several basic ring-theoretic results about tautological rings of manifolds W, that is, the rings of generalised Miller--Morita--Mumford classes for fibre bundles with fibre W. Firstly we provide conditions on the rational cohomology of W which ensure that its tautological ring is finitely-generated, and we show that these conditions cannot be completely relaxed by giving an example of a tautological ring which fails to be finitely-generated in quite a strong sense. Secondly, we provide conditions on torus actions on W which ensure that the rank of the torus gives a lower bound for the Krull dimension of the tautological ring of W. Lastly, we give extensive computations in the tautological rings of CP^2 and S^2 x S^2.

Semi-simplicial spaces

This is an exposition of homotopical results on the geometric realization of semi-simplicial spaces. We then use these to derive basic foundational results about classifying spaces of topological categories, possibly without units. The topics considered include: fibrancy conditions on topological categories; the effect on classifying spaces of freely adjoining units; approximate notions of units; Quillen's Theorems A and B for non-unital topological categories; the effect on classifying spaces of changing the topology on the space of objects; the Group-Completion Theorem.

Infinite loop spaces and positive scalar curvature in the presence of a fundamental group

This is a continuation of our previous work with Botvinnik on the nontriviality of the secondary index invariant on spaces of metrics of positive scalar curvature, in which we take the fundamental group of the manifolds into account. We show that the secondary index invariant associated to the vanishing of the Rosenberg index can be highly nontrivial, for positive scalar curvature Spin manifolds with torsionfree fundamental groups which satisfy the Baum--Connes conjecture. For example, we produce a compact Spin 6-manifold such that its space of positive scalar curvature metrics has each rational homotopy group infinite dimensional. At a more technical level, we introduce the notion of "stable metrics" and prove a basic existence theorem for them, which generalises the Gromov--Lawson surgery technique, and we also give a method for rounding corners of manifold with positive scalar curvature metrics.

Homological stability for automorphism groups

Given a family of groups admitting a braided monoidal structure (satisfying mild assumptions) we construct a family of spaces on which the groups act and whose connectivity yields, via a classical argument of Quillen, homological stability for the family of groups. We show that stability also holds with both polynomial and abelian twisted coefficients, with no further assumptions. This new construction of a family of spaces from a family of groups recovers known spaces in the classical examples of stable families of groups, such as the symmetric groups, general linear groups and mapping class groups. By making systematic the proofs of classical stability results, we show that they all hold with the same type of coefficient systems, obtaining in particular without any further work new stability theorems with twisted coefficients for the symmetric groups, braid groups, automorphisms of free groups, unitary groups, mapping class groups of non-orientable surfaces and mapping class groups of 3-manifolds. Our construction can also be applied to families of groups not considered before in the context of homological stability. As a byproduct of our work, we construct the braided analogue of the category FI of finite sets and injections relevant to the present context, and define polynomiality for functors in the context of pre-braided monoidal categories.

Homological stability for moduli spaces of high dimensional manifolds. II

We prove a homological stability theorem for moduli spaces of manifolds of dimension $2n$, for attaching handles of index at least $n$, after these manifolds have been stabilised by countably many copies of $S^n \times S^n$. Combined with previous work of the authors, we obtain an analogue of the Madsen--Weiss theorem for any simply-connected manifold of dimension $2n \geq 6$.

Topology of the Electroweak Vacua

In the Standard Model, the electroweak symmetry is broken by a complex, $SU(2)$-doublet Higgs field and the vacuum manifold $SU(2)\times U(1)/U(1)$ has the topology of a 3-sphere. We remark that there exist theoretical alternatives that are locally isomorphic, but in which the vacuum manifold is homeomorphic to an arbitrary non-trivial principal $U(1)$-bundle over a 2-sphere. These alternatives have non-trivial fundamental group and thus feature topologically-stable electroweak strings. An alternative based on the manifold $\mathbb{R}P^3$ (with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}/2$) allows custodial protection of gauge boson masses and their couplings to fermions, but, in common with all alternatives to $S^3$, has a problem with fermion masses.

Cohomology of automorphism groups of free groups with twisted coefficients

We compute the groups $H^*(\mathrm{Aut}(F_n); M)$ and $H^*(\mathrm{Out}(F_n); M)$ in a stable range, where $M$ is obtained by applying a Schur functor to $H_\mathbb{Q}$ or $H^*_\mathbb{Q}$, respectively the first rational homology and cohomology of $F_n$. For reasons which are not conceptually clear, taking coefficients in $H_\mathbb{Q}$ and its related modules behaves in a far less trivial way than taking coefficients in $H^*_\mathbb{Q}$ and its related modules. The answer may be described in terms of stable multiplicities of irreducibles in the plethysm $\mathrm{Sym}^k \circ \mathrm{Sym}^l$ of symmetric powers. We also compute the stable integral cohomology groups of $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ with coefficients in $H$ or $H^*$, respectively the first integral homology and cohomology of $F_n$, and compute the stable cohomology with coefficients in Schur functors of $H$ or $H^*$ modulo small primes.

Infinite loop spaces and positive scalar curvature

We study the homotopy type of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on high-dimensional compact spin manifolds. Hitchin used the fact that there are no harmonic spinors on a manifold with positive scalar curvature to construct a secondary index map from the space of positive scalar metrics to a suitable space from the real $K$-theory spectrum. Our main results concern the nontriviality of this map. We prove that for $2n \geq 6$, the natural $KO$-orientation from the infinite loop space of the Madsen--Tillmann--Weiss spectrum factors (up to homotopy) through the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature on any $2n$-dimensional spin manifold. For manifolds of odd dimension $2n+1 \geq 7$, we prove the existence of a similar factorisation. When combined with computational methods from homotopy theory, these results have strong implications. For example, the secondary index map is surjective on all rational homotopy groups. We also present more refined calculations concerning integral homotopy groups. To prove our results we use three major sets of technical tools and results. The first set of tools comes from Riemannian geometry: we use a parameterised version of the Gromov--Lawson surgery technique which allows us to apply homotopy-theoretic techniques to spaces of metrics of positive scalar curvature. Secondly, we relate Hitchin's secondary index to several other index-theoretical results, such as the Atiyah--Singer family index theorem, the additivity theorem for indices on noncompact manifolds and the spectral-flow index theorem. Finally, we use the results and tools developed recently in the study of moduli spaces of manifolds and cobordism categories. The key new ingredient we use in this paper is the high-dimensional analogue of the Madsen--Weiss theorem, proven by Galatius and the third named author.

Homological stability for spaces of embedded surfaces

We study the space of oriented genus g subsurfaces of a fixed manifold M, and in particular its homological properties. We construct a "scanning map" which compares this space to the space of sections of a certain fibre bundle over M associated to its tangent bundle, and show that this map induces an isomorphism on homology in a range of degrees. Our results are analogous to McDuff's theorem on configuration spaces, extended from 0-manifolds to 2-manifolds.

An upper bound for the pseudoisotopy stable range

We prove that the pseudoisotopy stable range for manifolds of dimension 2n can be no better than (2n-2). In order to do so, we define new characteristic classes for block bundles, extending our earlier work with Ebert, and prove their non-triviality. We also explain how similar methods show that Top(2n)/O(2n) is rationally (4n-5)-connected.

Tautological rings for high dimensional manifolds

We study tautological rings for high dimensional manifolds, that is, for each smooth manifold $M$ the ring $R^*(M)$ of those of characteristic classes of smooth fibre bundles with fibre $M$ which is generated by generalised Miller--Morita--Mumford classes. We completely describe these rings modulo nilpotent elements, when $M$ is a connected sum of copies of $S^n \times S^n$ for $n$ odd.

Abelian quotients of mapping class groups of highly connected manifolds

We compute the abelianisations of the mapping class groups of the manifolds $W_g^{2n} = g(S^n \times S^n)$ for $n \geq 3$ and $g \geq 5$. The answer is a direct sum of two parts. The first part arises from the action of the mapping class group on the middle homology, and takes values in the abelianisation of the automorphism group of the middle homology. The second part arises from bordism classes of mapping cylinders and takes values in the quotient of the stable homotopy groups of spheres by a certain subgroup which in many cases agrees with the image of the stable $J$-homomorphism. We relate its calculation to a purely homotopy theoretic problem.
