Local well-posedness for the biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in low dimensions

In this paper we consider the 4th order (or biharmonic) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in dimensions 1, 2, and 3, where the potential term is expressed as a power non-linearity (for any positive power) and the dispersion operator has the {\it fourth} order combined with the lower {\it second} order. The fourth order NLS equation has recently attracted attention of researchers since quartic solitons have been experimentally obtained in optics, and thus, mathematical theory of solutions to the 4th order NLS equation in physical dimensions $N=1,2,3$ is timely to develop. In this work we show the local well-posedness of the 4th order or bi-harmonic NLS equation on a weighted subset of a Sobolev space as well as in $H^s$ spaces.

Decay and regularity properties for the dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equation

We study spatial decay properties of solutions to the dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equation. We first establish persistence properties in weighted Sobolev spaces under a sharp condition between decay and regularity, improving previous results. Additionally, extending recent works on the Benjamin-Ono equation by Linares and Ponce [27], we also show that decay at two distinct times implies additional regularity of solutions. The proof relies on weighted energy estimates and pseudo-differential methods, which build on an iterative mechanism that trades decay for regularity.

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities in 1D

We consider the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t + u_{xx} + \mathcal{N}(u)u=0, \quad x,t \in \mathbb R, $$ with the nonlinearity term that is expressed as a sum of powers, possibly infinite: $$ \mathcal{N}(u) = \sum d_k |u|^{α_k}, \quad α_k > 0. $$ We first investigate the local well-posedness of this equation for any positive powers of $α_k$ in a certain weighted class of initial data, subset of $H^1 (\mathbb R)$. For that we use an approach of Cazenave-Naumkin [19], thus, avoiding any Strichartz estimates. Then, using the pseudo-conformal transformation, we extend the local result to the global one for the initial data with a quadratic phase. Furthermore, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of such global solutions and prove scattering for data with the quadratic phase $e^{ib|x|^2}$ with sufficiently large positive $b$, in $H^1(\mathbb R)$. One of the advantages of considering an infinite sum in the nonlinearity term is being able to consider exponential nonlinearities, such as $e^{γ|u|^{k}} u$, as well as sine or cosine nonlinearities, and obtain well-posedness in those cases, the first such result for most of those nonlinearities. To conclude, we show numerical simulations for various examples of combined nonlinearities, including the double nonlinearity and an exponential one, then investigate the behavior of solutions with positive or negative initial $b$ in a quadratic phase data. Furthermore, we also show that a ground state in the NLS equation with combined nonlinearities no longer provides a sharp threshold for global behavior such as scattering vs. finite time blow-up, instead the equation has a much richer dynamics.

On Kato's smoothing effects for KdV and Benjamin type equations

We analyze how the interaction between local and nonlocal dispersions, combined with different types of nonlinearities, influences the smoothing effects of solutions. To achieve this goal, we consider a model that generalizes the KdV and Benjamin equations and demonstrate that its solutions exhibit Kato's smoothing effect and satisfy the propagation of regularity principle. As a result, we confirm that the higher-order dispersive term determines the local gain of fractional regularity of solutions. Our results are general; they not only recover known results for the KdV and Benjamin equations, but also provide new insights for a broader family of models of physical and mathematical interest with polynomial dispersions of arbitrary order.

A monotonicity formula for the fractional Laplacian and instability results for the Shrira equation

By employing a new class of pseudo-differential operators introduced in a previous work, we establish a novel monotonicity formula for the fractional Laplacian $|\nabla_x|^α$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n \geq 2$ and $α\in [1,2)$, This framework enables us to localize our analysis to specific regions of Euclidean space where monotonicity properties of the $L^2$-mass of solutions to dispersive equations with fractional dispersion are preserved. As an application, we focus on the Shrira equation, proving conditional instability results for its traveling wave solutions in the critical regime. We deduce key virial-type estimates that govern the long-time behavior of the $L^2$-mass. As a consequence, we establish instability results without requiring pointwise decay estimates employed in previous works. Our approach provides a robust and flexible method for monotonicity techniques to higher dimensions, shedding light on the delicate interplay between nonlocal dispersion and spatial localization in nonlinear dispersive models.

Existence and uniqueness of radial solutions of semi-linear equations on manifolds

We investigate the existence and uniqueness of solutions for second-order semi-linear partial differential equations defined on a Riemannian manifold $M$. By combining differential geometry and analysis techniques, we establish the existence and uniqueness of constant solutions through the orbits of a group action. Our approach transforms such problems into equivalent ones over a submanifold $Σ$ of dimension one, which is transversal to the group action. This reduction leads us to a one-dimensional setting, where we can apply different results from the theory of ordinary differential equations. Our framework is versatile and includes the setups of polar actions or exponential coordinates, with particular examples such as the sphere, surfaces of revolution, and others.

On the decay of solutions for the negative fractional KdV equation

We explore the limits of fractional dispersive effects and their incidence in the propagation of polynomial weights. More precisely, we consider the fractional KdV equation when a differential operator of negative order determines the dispersion. We investigate what magnitude of weights and conditions on the initial data that allow solutions of the equation to persist in weighted spaces. As a consequence of our results, it follows that even in the presence of negative dispersion, it is still possible to propagate weights whose maximum magnitude is related to the dispersion of the equation. We also observe that our results in weighted spaces do not follow specific properties and limits that their counterparts with positive dispersion.

The generalized fractional KdV equation in weighted Sobolev spaces

This work concerns the study of persistence property in polynomial weighted spaces for solutions of the generalized fractional KdV equation in any spatial dimension $d\geq 1$. By establishing well-posedness results in conjunction with some asymptotic at infinity unique continuation principles, it is verified that dispersive effects and dimensionality mainly determine the maximum spatial decay allowed by solutions of this model. In particular, we recover and extend some known results on weighted spaces for different models such as the Benjamin-Ono equation, and the dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equation. The estimates obtained for the linear equation seem to be of independent interest, and they are useful to obtain persistence properties in weighted spaces for models with different nonlinearities as the fractional KdV equation with combined nonlinearities.

On the well-posedness of the periodic fractional Schrödinger equation

We consider the periodic fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ iu_t -(-Δ)^{\frac{s}{2}} u + \mathcal{N}(|u|)u=0, \quad x\in \mathbb{T}^N,\, \, t \in \mathbb R, \, \, s>0, $$ where the nonlinearity term is expressed in two ways: the first one $\mathcal{N}\in C^J(\mathbb R^+)$, whose derivatives have a certain polynomial decay, e.g., $\mathcal{N}(|u|)=\log(|u|)$; the second one is given by a sum of powers, possibly infinite, $$ \mathcal{N}(|u|) = \sum a_k |u|^{γ_k}, \quad γ_k \in \mathbb{R}, ~~ a_k \in \mathbb{C}, $$ which includes examples such as $\mathcal{N}(|u|) \, u =\frac{u}{|u|^γ},$ $γ>0$. By using standard properties of periodic Sobolev spaces $H^J(\mathbb{T}^N)$, $J>0$, we study the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problems of the above equations when initial data satisfy a non-vanishing condition $\inf\limits_{x\in \mathbb{T}^N}|u_0(x)|>0$.

Stability and instability of solitary waves in fractional generalized KdV equation in all dimensions

We study stability of solitary wave solutions for the fractional generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation $$ \partial_t u- \partial_{x_1} D^αu+ \tfrac{1}{m}\partial_{x_1}(u^m)=0, ~ (x_1,\dots,x_d)\in \mathbb{R}^d, \, \, t\in \mathbb{R}, \, \, 0<α<2, $$ in any spatial dimension $d\geq 1$ and nonlinearity $m>1$. The arguments developed here are independent of the spatial dimension and rely on the new estimates for spatial decay of ground states and their regularity. In the $L^2$-subcritical case, we prove the orbital stability of solitary waves using the concentration-compactness argument, the commutator estimates and expansions of nonlocal operator $D^α$ in several variables. In the $L^2$-supercritical case, we show that solitary waves are unstable. More precisely, the instability is obtained by constructing an explicit sequence of initial conditions that move away from a soliton orbit in finite time, this is shown in conjunction with the modulation and truncation arguments, and incorporating the decay and regularity of the ground states. As a consequence, in 1D we show the instability of solitary waves of the supercritical generalized Benjamin-Ono equation ($α=1$) and the dispersion-generalized Benjamin-Ono equation ($1<α<2$); furthermore, new results on the instability are obtained in the weaker dispersion regime when $\frac{1}{2}<α<1$. This work should be of interest in studying stability of solitary waves and other coherent structures in a variety of dispersive equations that involve nonlocal operators.

On decay properties for solutions of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

This work mainly focuses on the spatial decay properties of solutions to the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. In earlier studies for the two- and three-dimensional cases, it was established that if the initial condition $u_0$ verifies $\langle σ\cdot x\rangle^{r}u_{0}\in L^{2}(\left\{σ\cdot x\geq κ\right\}),$ for some $r\in\mathbb{N}$, $κ\in\mathbb{R}$, being $σ$ be a suitable non-null vector in the Euclidean space, then the corresponding solution $u(t)$ generated from this initial condition verifies $\langle σ\cdot x\rangle ^{r}u(t)\in L^2\left(\left\{σ\cdot x>κ-νt\right\}\right)$, for any $ν>0$. In this regard, we first extend such results to arbitrary dimensions, decay power $r>0$ not necessarily an integer, and we give a detailed description of the gain of regularity propagated by solutions in terms of the magnitude of the weight $r$. The deduction of our results depends on a new class of pseudo-differential operators, which is useful to quantify decay and smoothness properties on a fractional scale. Secondly, we show that if the initial data $u_{0}$ has a decay of exponential type on a particular half space, that is, $e^{b\, σ\cdot x}u_{0}\in L^{2}(\left\{σ\cdot x\geq κ\right\}),$ then the corresponding solution satisfies $e^{b\, σ\cdot x} u(t)\in H^{p}\left(\left\{σ\cdot x>κ-νt\right\}\right),$ for all $p\in\mathbb{N}$, and time $t\geq δ,$ where $δ>0$. To our knowledge, this is the first study of such property. As a further consequence, we also obtain well-posedness results in anisotropic weighted Sobolev spaces in arbitrary dimensions. Finally, as a by-product of the techniques considered here, we show that our results are also valid for solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation.

Spatial decay properties for a model in shear flows posed on the cylinder

We study spatial decay properties for solutions of the Pelinovski-Stepanyants equation posed on the cylinder. We establish the maximum polynomial decay admissible for solutions of such a model. It is verified that the equation on the cylinder propagates polynomial weights with different restrictions than the model set in $\mathbb{R}^2$. For example, a local well-posedness theory is deduced which contains the line solitary wave provided by solutions of the Benjamin-Ono equation extended to the cylinder. Key results for our analysis are obtained from a detailed study of the dispersive effects of the linear equation in weighted Sobolev spaces. The results in this paper appear to be one of the first studies of polynomial decay for nonlocal models in the cylinder.

Well-posedness and dynamics of solutions to the generalized KdV with low power nonlinearity

We consider two types of the generalized Korteweg - de Vries equation, where the nonlinearity is given with or without absolute values, and, in particular, including the low powers of nonlinearity, an example of which is the Schamel equation. We first prove the local well-posedness of both equations in a weighted subspace of $H^1$ that includes functions with polynomial decay, extending the result of Linares et al [39] to fractional weights. We then investigate solutions numerically, confirming the well-posedness and extending it to a wider class of functions that includes exponential decay. We include a comparison of solutions to both types of equations, in particular, we investigate soliton resolution for the positive and negative data with different decay rates. Finally, we study the interaction of various solitary waves in both models, showing the formation of solitons, dispersive radiation and even breathers, all of which are easier to track in nonlinearities with lower power.

Well-posedness in weighted spaces for the generalized Hartree equation with $p<2$

We investigate the well-posedness in the generalized Hartree equation $iu_t + Δu + (|x|^{-(N-γ)} \ast |u|^p)|u|^{p-2}u=0$, $x \in \mathbb{R}^N$, $0<γ<N$, for low powers of nonlinearity, $p<2$. We establish the local well-posedness for a class of data in weighted Sobolev spaces, following ideas of Cazenave and Naumkin [6]. This crucially relies on the boundedness of the Riesz transform in weighted Lebesgue spaces. As a consequence, we obtain a class of data that exists globally, moreover, scatters in positive time. Furthermore, in the focusing case in the $L^2$-supercritical setting we obtain a subset of locally well-posed data with positive energy, which blows up in finite time.

On persistence properties in weighted spaces for solutions of the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation

Persistence problems in weighted spaces have been studied for different dispersive models involving non-local operators. Generally, these models do not propagate polynomial weights of arbitrary magnitude, and the maximum decay rate is associated with the dispersive part of the equation. Altogether, this analysis is complemented by unique continuation principles that determine optimal spatial decay. This work is intended to establish the above questions for a weakly dispersive perturbation of the inviscid Burgers equation. More precisely, we consider the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation, which comprises the Burgers-Hilbert equation and dispersive effects weaker than those of the Benjamin-ono equation.

Higher dimensional generalization of the Benjamin-Ono equation: 2D case

We consider a higher-dimensional version of the Benjamin-Ono (HBO) equation in the 2D setting: $u_t- \mathcal{R}_1 Δu + \frac{1}{2}(u^2)_x=0, (x,y) \in \mathbb{R}^2$, which is $L^2$-critical, and investigate properties of solutions both analytically and numerically. For a generalized equation (fractional 2D gKdV) after deriving the Pohozaev identities, we obtain non-existence conditions for solitary wave solutions, then prove uniform bounds in the energy space or conditional global existence, and investigate the radiation region, a specific wedge in the negative $x$-direction. We then introduce our numerical approach in a general context, and apply it to obtain the ground state solution in the 2D critical HBO equation, then show that its mass is a threshold for global vs. finite time existing solutions, which is typical in the focusing (mass-)critical dispersive equations. We also observe that globally existing solutions tend to disperse completely into the radiation in this nonlocal equation. The blow-up solutions travel in the positive $x$-direction with the rescaled ground state profile while also radiating dispersive oscillations into the radiative wedge. We conclude with examples of different interactions of two solitary wave solutions, including weak and strong interactions.

On some regularity properties for the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono-Zakharov-Kuznetsov Equation

This work aims to study some smoothness properties concerning the initial value problem associated to the dispersive generalized Benjamin-Ono-Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. More precisely, we prove that the solutions to this model satisfy the so-called propagation of regularity. Roughly speaking, this principle states that if the initial data enjoys some extra smoothness prescribed on a family of half-spaces, then the regularity is propagated with infinite speed. In this sense, we prove that regardless of the scale measuring the extra regularity in such hyperplane collection, then all this regularity is also propagated by solutions of this model. Our analysis is mainly based on the deduction of propagation formulas relating homogeneous and non-homogeneous derivatives in certain regions of the plane.
