Existence of spot and lane stationary solutions for an ant active matter PDE model

This paper studies the existence of multiple non-trivial stationary solutions of a partial differential equation (PDE) model introduced in [3], motivated by collective ant behavior. Previous work suggested the presence of two types of non-trivial stationary solutions for this PDE system: spot and lane solutions. In this paper, we establish the existence of these families of solutions along a bifurcation sequence as the interaction strength grows, with progressively increasing numbers of clusters and parallel lanes, respectively. Finally, we show that, for small values of the anticipation parameter, the first bifurcating spot solutions are locally dynamically stable, while the lane solutions are unstable.

Existence and dimensional lower bound for the global attractor of a PDE model for ant trail formation

We study the asymptotic behavior of a nonlinear PDE model for ant trail formation, which was introduced in [3]. We establish the existence of a compact global attractor and prove the nonlinear instability of the homogeneous steady state under an inviscid instability condition. We also provide a dimensional lower bound on the attractor. Alternatively, we prove that if the interaction parameter is sufficiently small, the homogeneous steady state is globally asymptotically stable.

Convergence of a finite volume scheme for a model for ants

We develop and analyse a finite volume scheme for a nonlocal active matter system known to exhibit a rich array of complex behaviours. The model under investigation was derived from a stochastic system of interacting particles describing a foraging ant colony coupled to pheromone dynamics. In this work, we prove that the unique numerical solution converges to the unique weak solution as the mesh size and the time step go to zero. We also show discrete long-time estimates, which prove that certain norms are preserved for all times, uniformly in the mesh size and time step. In particular, we prove higher regularity estimates which provide an analogue of continuum parabolic higher regularity estimates. Finally, we numerically study the rate of convergence of the scheme, and we provide examples of the existence of multiple metastable steady states.

Lane formation and aggregation spots in a model of ants

We investigate an interacting particle model to simulate a foraging colony of ants, where each ant is represented as an active Brownian particle. The interactions among ants are mediated through chemotaxis, aligning their orientations with the upward gradient of the pheromone field. Unlike conventional models, our study introduces a parameter that enables the reproduction of two distinctive behaviors: the well-known Keller--Segel aggregation into spots and the formation of traveling clusters, without relying on external constraints such as food sources or nests. We consider the associated mean-field limit partial differential equation (PDE) of this system and establish the analytical and numerical foundations for understanding these particle behaviors. Remarkably, the mean-field PDE not only supports aggregation spots and lane formation but also unveils a bistable region where these two behaviors compete. The patterns associated with these phenomena are elucidated by the shape of the growing eigenfunctions derived from linear stability analysis. This study not only contributes to our understanding of complex ant colony dynamics but also introduces a novel parameter-dependent perspective on pattern formation in collective systems.
