New derivation for the equations of motion for particles in electromagnetism

We present equations of motion for charged particles using balanced equations, and without introducing explicitly divergent quantities. This derivation contains as particular cases some well known equations of motion, as the Lorentz-Dirac equations. An study of our main equations in terms of order of the interaction with the external field conduces us to the Landau-Lifshitz equations. We find that the analysis in second order show a special behavior. We give an explicit presentation up to third order of our main equations, and expressions for the calculation of general orders.

Gravitational lens optical scalars in terms of energy-momentum distributions

This is a general work on gravitational lensing. We present new expressions for the optical scalars and the deflection angle in terms of the energy-momentum tensor components of matter distributions. Our work generalizes standard references in the literature where normally stringent assumptions are made on the sources. The new expressions are manifestly gauge invariant, since they are presented in terms of curvature components. We also present a method of approximation for solving the lens equations, that can be applied to any order.

On computations of angular momentum and its flux in numerical relativity

The purpose of this note is to point out ambiguities that appear in the calculation of angular momentum and its radiated counterpart when some simple formulae are used to compute them. We illustrate, in two simple different examples, how incorrect results can be obtained with them. Additionally, we discuss the magnitude of possible errors in well known situations.

Dealing with delicate issues in waveforms calculations

We revisit the calculation of gravitational radiation through the use of Weyl scalars. We point out several possible problems arising from gauge and tetrad ambiguities and ways to address them. Our analysis indicates how, relatively simple corrections can be introduced to remove these ambiguities.

Unambiguous angular momentum of radiative spacetimes and asymptotic structure in terms of the center of mass system

We present a definition of angular momentum for radiative spacetimes which does not suffer from any ambiguity of supertranslations. We succeed in providing an appropriate notion of {\it intrinsic} angular momentum; and at the same time a definition of center of mass frame at future null infinity. We use the center of mass frame to present the asymptotic structure equations for vacuum spacetimes.

Intrinsic angular momentum in general relativity

There are several definitions of the notion of angular momentum in general relativity. However non of them can be said to capture the physical notion of intrinsic angular momentum of the sources in the presence of gravitational radiation. We present a definition which is appropriate for the description of intrinsic angular momentum in radiative spacetimes. This notion is required in calculations involving radiation of angular momentum, as for example is expected in binary coalescence of black holes.

Rest Frame System for Asymptotically Flat Spacetimes

The notion of center of mass for an isolated system has been previously encoded in the definition of the so called nice sections. In this article we present a generalization of the proof of existence of solutions to the linearized equation for nice sections, and formalize a local existence proof of nice sections relaxing the radiation condition. We report on the differentiable and non-self-crossing properties of this family of solutions. We also give a proof of the global existence of nice sections.

Photon rockets and the Robinson-Trautman geometries

We point out the relation between the photon rocket spacetimes and the Robinson Trautman geometries. This allows a discussion of the issues related to the distinction between the gravitational and matter energy radiation that appear in these metrics in a more geometrical way, taking full advantage of their asymptotic properties at null infinity to separate the Weyl and Ricci radiations, and to clearly establish their gravitational energy content. We also give the exact solution for the generalized photon rockets.

Perturbations with angular momentum of Robinson-Trautman spacetimes

We study the possible asymptotically flat perturbations of Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We differentiate between algebraically special perturbations and general perturbations. The equations that determine physically realistic spacetimes with angular momentum are presented.

Characterizing exact solutions from asymptotic physical concepts

We contribute to the subject of the physical interpretation of exact solutions by characterizing them through a systematic study in terms of unambiguous physical concepts coming from systems in linearized gravity. We use the physical meaning of the leading order behavior of the Weyl spinor components $Ψ_0^0$, $Ψ_1^0$ and $Ψ_2^0$ and of the Maxwell spinor components $ϕ_0^0$ and $ϕ_1^0$ and integrate from future null infinity inwards the exact field equations. In this way it is assigned an unambiguous physical meaning to exact solutions. We indicate a method to generalize the procedure to radiating spacetimes.

Cosmic implications on thermodynamics and the explanation of the so called horizon problem

We show that there are implications on thermodynamics that come from the existence of the initial cosmic singularity. At present time this is more a conceptual change than an observable one. However at very early cosmic times there is a big difference between the actual behavior of thermodynamic quantities and the behavior assumed in the standard cosmological model. We present the discussion of two systems: an ideal monatomic gas at present, and a photon gas at the early Universe. We show the striking result that the entropy density goes to zero as the cosmic time goes to zero. This in turn, provides an explanation for the so called horizon problem.
