The Orbit Space Approach for Piecewise Smooth Vector Fields

In this work we develop a well-defined theory of orbit spaces for piecewise smooth vector fields (PSVFs). This approach is inspired by the techniques already used in the study of endomorphisms, namely inverse limit analysis, and has been used before for PSVFs. We then apply the construction of our theory to understanding transitivity in PSVFs. Our results prove that the known examples of transitive PSVFs in the literature, the bean model and the sphere model, are indeed transitive in the orbit space.

Bifurcation Analysis of 3D Filippov Systems around Cusp-Fold Singularities

This paper investigates the local behavior of 3D Filippov systems $Z=(X,Y)$, focusing on the dynamics around cusp-fold singularities. These singular points, characterized by cubic contact of vector field $X$ and quadratic contact of vector field $Y$ on the switching manifold, are structurally unstable under small perturbations of $Z$, giving rise to significant bifurcation phenomena. We analyze the bifurcations of a 3D Filippov system around an invisible cusp-fold singularity, providing a detailed characterization of its crossing dynamics under certain conditions. We classify the characteristics of the singularity when it emerges generically in one-parameter families (a codimension-one phenomenon), and we show that no crossing limit cycles (CLCs) locally bifurcate from it in this particular scenario. When the vector fields $X$ and $Y$ are anti-collinear at the cusp-fold singularity, we provide conditions for the generic emergence of this point in two-parameter families (a codimension-two phenomenon). In this case, we show that the unfolding of such a singularity leads to a bifurcating CLC, which degenerates into a fold-regular polycycle (self-connection at a fold-regular singularity). Furthermore, we numerically derive the polycycle bifurcation curve and complete the two-parameter bifurcation set for a boost converter system previously studied in the literature. This allows the identification of parameter regions where the boost converter system exhibits a CLC in its phase portrait, providing a understanding of its complex dynamics.

On small breathers of nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations via exponentially small homoclinic splitting

Breathers are nontrivial time-periodic and spatially localized solutions of nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations (PDEs). Families of breathers have been found for certain integrable PDEs but are believed to be rare in non-integrable ones such as nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In this paper we show that small amplitude breathers of \emph{any} temporal frequency do not exist for semilinear Klein-Gordon equations with generic analytic odd nonlinearities. A breather with small amplitude exists only when its temporal frequency is close to be resonant with the linear Klein-Gordon dispersion relation. Our main result is that, for such frequencies, we rigorously identify the leading order term in the exponentially small (with respect to the small amplitude) obstruction to the existence of small breathers in terms of the so-called \emph{Stokes constant}, which depends on the nonlinearity analytically, but is independent of the frequency. This gives a rigorous justification of a formal asymptotic argument by Kruskal and Segur \cite{KS87} in the analysis of small breathers. We rely on the spatial dynamics approach where breathers can be seen as homoclinic orbits. The birth of such small homoclinics is analyzed via a singular perturbation setting where a Bogdanov-Takens type bifurcation is coupled to infinitely many rapidly oscillatory directions. The leading order term of the exponentially small splitting between the stable/unstable invariant manifolds is obtained through a careful analysis of the analytic continuation of their parameterizations. This requires the study of another limit equation in the complexified evolution variable, the so-called \emph{inner equation}.

Bifurcation Diagrams of Global Connections in Filippov Systems

In this paper, we are concerned about the qualitative behavior of planar Filippov systems around some typical invariant sets, namely, polycycles. In the smooth context, a polycycle is a simple closed curve composed by a collection of singularities and regular orbits, inducing a first return map. Here, this concept is extended to Filippov systems by allowing typical Filippov singularities lying on the switching manifold. Our main goal consists in developing a method to investigate the unfolding of polycycles in Filippov systems. In addition, we apply this method to describe bifurcation diagrams of Filippov systems around certain polycycles.

Chains in $3D$ Filippov Systems: A Chaotic Phenomenon

This work is devoted to the study of global connections between typical generic singularities, named $T$-singularities, in piecewise smooth dynamical systems. Such a singularity presents the so-called nonsmooth diabolo, which consists on a pair of invariant cones emanating from it. We analyze global features arising from the communication between the branches of a nonsmooth diabolo of a $T$-singularity and we prove that, under generic conditions, such communication leads to a chaotic behavior of the system. More specifically, we relate crossing orbits of a Filippov system presenting certain crossing self-connections to a $T$-singularity, with a Smale horseshoe of a first return map associated to the system. The techniques used in this work rely on the detection of transverse intersections between invariant manifolds of a hyperbolic fixed point of saddle type of such a first return map and the analysis of the Smale horseshoe associated to it. From the specific case discussed in our approach, we present a robust chaotic phenomenon for which its counterpart in the smooth case seems to happen only for highly degenerate systems.

On Typical Homoclinic-Like Loops in 3D Filippov Systems

In this work a homoclinic-like loop of a piecewise smooth vector field passing through a typical singularity is analyzed. We have shown that such a loop is robust in one-parameter families of Filippov systems. The basin of attraction of this connection is computed as well as its bifurcation diagram. It is worthwhile to mention that this phenomenon has no counterpart in the smooth world and the techniques used in this analysis differ from the usual ones.

Critical velocity in kink-defect interaction models: rigorous results

In this work we study a model of interaction of kinks of the sine-Gordon equation with a weak defect. We obtain rigorous results concerning the so-called critical velocity derived in [7] by a geometric approach. More specifically, we prove that a heteroclinic orbit in the energy level $0$ of a $2$-dof Hamiltonian $H_ε$ is destroyed giving rise to heteroclinic connections between certain elements (at infinity) for exponentially small (in $ε$) energy levels. In this setting Melnikov theory does not apply because there are exponentially small phenomena.

On Structural Stability of 3D Filippov Systems: A Semi-Local Approach

The main purpose of this work is to provide a non-local approach to study aspects of structural stability of 3D Filippov systems. We introduce a notion of semi-local structural stability which detects when a piecewise smooth vector field is robust around the whole switching manifold and we give a complete characterization of such systems. In particular, we present some methods in the qualitative theory of piecewise smooth vector fields, emphasizing a geometrical analysis of the foliations generated by their orbits. Such approach displays surprisingly a rich dynamical behaviour that has been studied in details in this work. It is worth to say that this subject has not been treated recently from a non-local point of view, and we hope that the approach adopted in this work contributes to the understanding of the structural stability for piecewise-smooth vector fields in its most global sense.

Generic Singularities of 3D Piecewise Smooth Dynamical Systems

The aim of this paper is to provide a discussion on current directions of research involving typical singularities of 3D nonsmooth vector fields. A brief survey of known results is presented. The main purpose of this work is to describe the dynamical features of a fold-fold singularity in its most basic form and to give a complete and detailed proof of its local structural stability (or instability). In addition, classes of all topological types of a fold-fold singularity are intrinsically characterized. Such proof essentially follows firstly from some lines laid out by Colombo, García, Jeffrey, Teixeira and others and secondly offers a rigorous mathematical treatment under clear and crisp assumptions and solid arguments. One should to highlight that the geometric-topological methods employed lead us to the completely mathematical understanding of the dynamics around a T-singularity. This approach lends itself to applications in generic bifurcation theory. It is worth to say that such subject is still poorly understood in higher dimension.
