On the Range of Validity of the Dipole Picture

We derive correlated bounds on ratios of deep inelastic structure functions from the dipole picture of photon-hadron scattering at high energies. In particular we consider ratios of the longitudinal structure function, the total structure function and the charm part of the latter. We also consider ratios of total structure functions taken at the same energy but at three different photon virtualities. It is shown that by confronting these bounds with experimental data we can significantly constrain the range of validity of the dipole picture.

On the Limitations of the Color Dipole Picture

We discuss two aspects of the color dipole picture of high energy photon-proton scattering. First we present bounds on various ratios of deep inelastic structure functions resulting from the dipole picture that, together with the measured data, can be used to restrict the kinematical range of its applicability. The second issue that we address is the choice of energy variable in the dipole-proton cross section.

Diffractive Neutral Pion Production, Chiral Symmetry and the Odderon

We discuss the diffractive photo- and electroproduction of a single neutral pion at high energies where it can occur due to odderon exchange. We show that this process is dynamically suppressed as a consequence of chiral symmetry. Our result reconciles earlier theoretical expectations with the non-observation of this reaction at HERA.

Bounds on Ratios of DIS Structure Functions from the Color Dipole Picture

We derive bounds on ratios of deep inelastic nucleon structure functions from the color dipole picture of high energy photon-hadron scattering. We find an upper bound on the ratio R=sigma_L/sigma_T of the total cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarized photons. We further obtain bounds on the ratio of deep inelastic structure functions F_2 taken at the same energy but at different photon virtualities. It is shown that these bounds can be used to constrain the range of applicability of the dipole picture.

Towards a Nonperturbative Foundation of the Dipole Picture: I. Functional Methods

This is the first of two papers in which we study real and virtual photon-proton scattering in a nonperturbative framework. We classify different contributions to this process and identify the leading contributions at high energies. We then study the renormalisation of the photon-quark-antiquark vertex that occurs in the leading contributions. We find something like the dipole picture in one of these contributions but also find two correction terms which can potentially become large at small photon virtualities. In the second paper we will discuss the additional approximations and assumptions that are necessary to obtain the dipole model of high energy scattering from the results found here.

Towards a Nonperturbative Foundation of the Dipole Picture: II. High Energy Limit

This is the second of two papers in which we study real and virtual photon-proton scattering in a nonperturbative framework. In the first paper we have identified the leading contributions to this process at high energies and have derived expressions for them which take into account the renormalisation of the photon-quark-antiquark vertex. In the present paper we investigate the approximations and assumptions that are necessary to obtain the dipole model of high energy scattering from the results derived in the first paper. We discuss the gauge invariance of different contributions to the scattering amplitude and point out some subtleties related to gauge invariance in the correct definition of a perturbative photon wave function. As a phenomenological consequence of the dipole picture we derive a bound on the ratio of the cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarised photons. This bound is independent of any particular model for the dipole-proton cross section and allows one to test the validity of the assumptions leading to the dipole picture in particular at low photon virtualities. We conclude that the naive dipole model formula should be supplemented by two additional terms which can potentially become large at small photon virtualities.

Metastable states, the adiabatic theorem and parity violating geometric phases I

A system of metastable plus unstable states is discussed. The mass matrix governing the time development of the system is supposed to vary slowly with time. The adiabatic limit for this case is studied and it is shown that only the metastable states obtain the analogs of the dynamical and geometrical phase factors familiar from stable states. Abelian and non-abelian geometric phase factors for metastable states are defined.

Metastable states, the adiabatic theorem and parity violating geometric phases II

We discuss and calculate parity conserving (PC) and parity violating (PV) geometric phases for the metastable 2S states of hydrogen and deuterium. The atoms are supposed to be subjected to slowly varying electric and magnetic fields which act as external parameters for the atoms. Geometric flux density fields are introduced which allow for an easy overview how to choose the paths in parameter space in order to obtain only PC or only PV geometric phases. The PV phases are calculated in the Standard Model of particle physics. Even if numerically they come out small they have interest of principle as a new manifestation of parity violation in atomic physics.

Chiral Symmetry and Diffractive Neutral Pion Photo- and Electroproduction

We show that diffractive production of a single neutral pion in photon-induced reactions at high energy is dynamically suppressed due to the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD. These reactions have been proposed as a test of the odderon exchange mechanism. We show that the odderon contribution to the amplitude for such reactions vanishes exactly in the chiral limit. This result is obtained in a nonperturbative framework and by using PCAC relations between the amplitudes for neutral pion and axial vector current production.

Optimal observables and phase-space ambiguities

Optimal observables are known to lead to minimal statistical errors on parameters for a given normalised event distribution of a physics reaction. Thereby all statistical correlations are taken into account. Therefore, on the one hand they are a useful tool to extract values on a set of parameters from measured data. On the other hand one can calculate the minimal constraints on these parameters achievable by any data-analysis method for the specific reaction. In case the final states can be reconstructed without ambiguities optimal observables have a particularly simple form. We give explicit formulae for the optimal observables for generic reactions in case of ambiguities in the reconstruction of the final state and for general parameterisation of the final-state phase space.

Pomeron Physics and QCD

We review some theoretical ideas concerning diffractive processes. We discuss the Regge Ansatz for the pomeron and the two pomeron model. Then we present the results obtained from nonperturbative QCD for high energy scattering. There we can extract from elastic scattering data the parameters describing the QCD vacuum, in particular the string tension.

Probing triple gauge couplings with transverse beam polarisation in e+e- -> W+W-

The prospects of measuring triple gauge couplings in W pair production at future linear colliders with transverse beam polarisation are studied. We consider CP conserving and CP violating couplings with both real and imaginary parts. The maximum achievable sensitivity in a simultaneous measurement of all couplings is determined using optimal observables, extending an earlier analysis for longitudinal beam polarisation. We find good sensitivity to the coupling Im(g^R_1 + kappa_R), which is not measurable with longitudinal polarisation. In contrast, for the real parts (including the CP violating couplings) the sensitivity is better if both beams are longitudinally polarised. We conclude that a comprehensive measurement of all triple gauge couplings requires both transverse and longitudinal beam polarisation.

Triple gauge couplings in polarised e-e+ -> W-W+ and their measurement using optimal observables

The sensitivity of optimal integrated observables to electroweak triple gauge couplings is investigated for the process e-e+ -> W-W+ -> 4 fermions at future linear colliders. By a suitable reparameterisation of the couplings we achieve that all 28 coupling parameters have uncorrelated statistical errors and are naturally normalised for this process. Discrete symmetry properties simplify the analysis and allow checks on the stability of numerical results. We investigate the sensitivity to the couplings of the normalised event distribution and the additional constraints that can be obtained from the total rate. Particular emphasis is put on the gain in sensitivity one can achieve with longitudinal beam polarisation. We also point out questions that may best be settled with transversely polarised beams. In particular we find that with purely longitudinal polarisation one linear combination of coupling parameters is hardly measurable by means of the normalised event distribution.

Inelastic diffractive proton-proton scattering in nonperturbative QCD

We examine diffractive proton-proton scattering. Using a functional integral approach we derive the scattering amplitudes, which are governed by the expectation value of lightlike Wegner-Wilson loops. This expectation value is then evaluated using a cumulant expansion and the model of the stochastic vacuum. From the scattering amplitudes we calculate total and differential cross sections for high centre of mass energy and small momentum transfer and compare with experiments.

Nonperturbative QCD Effects in High Energy Collisions

High energy hadron-hadron collisions are discussed. It is argued that soft collisions should involve in an essential way nonperturbative QCD. A way is outlined how to calculate properties of high energy elastic hadron-hadron scattering using field theoretic methods. The functional integrals occuring there are evaluated using the ``stochastic vacuum model''. A satisfactory comparison between theory and experiment is achieved. Then the question of possible nonperturbative QCD effects in high energy hard hadron-hadron collisions is raised. It is shown that some spin effects in the Drell-Yan process may give a hint that such effects exist indeed in nature.
