Let (M, g) be an (n + 1)-dimensional asymptotically locally hyperbolic (ALH) manifold with a conformal compactification whose conformal infinity is ($\partial$M, [$γ$]). We will first observe that Ch(M, g) $\le$ n, where Ch(M, g) is the Cheeger constant of M. We then prove that, if the Ricci curvature of M is bounded from below by --n and its scalar curvature approaches --n(n+1) fast enough at infinity, then Ch(M, g) = n if and only Y($\partial$M, [$γ$]) $\ge$ 0, where Y($\partial$M, [$γ$]) denotes the Yamabe invariant of the conformal infinity. This gives an answer to a question raised by J. Lee [L].
Suppose that $Σ=\partial M$ is the $n$-dimensional boundary of a connected compact Riemannian spin manifold $( M,\langle\;,\;\rangle)$ with non-negative scalar curvature, and that the (inward) mean curvature $H$ of $Σ$ is positive. We show that the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator of the boundary corresponding to the conformal metric $\langle\;,\;\rangle_H=H^2\langle\;,\;\rangle$ is at least $n/2$ and equality holds if and only if there exists a parallel spinor field on $ M$. As a consequence, if $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion $ϕ$ with mean curvature $H_0$ as a hypersurface into another spin Riemannian manifold $ M_0$ admitting a parallel spinor field, then \begin{equation} \label{HoloIneq} \int_ΣH\,dΣ\le \int_Σ\frac{H^2_0}{H}\, dΣ\end{equation} and equality holds if and only if both immersions have the same shape operator. In this case, $Σ$ has to be also connected. In the special case where $M_0=\R^{n+1}$, equality in (\ref{HoloIneq}) implies that $M$ is an Euclidean domain and $ϕ$ is congruent to the embedding of $Σ$ in $M$ as its boundary. We also prove that Inequality (\ref{HoloIneq}) implies the Positive Mass Theorem (PMT). Note that, using the PMT and the additional assumption that $ϕ$ is a strictly convex embedding into the Euclidean space, Shi and Tam \cite{ST1} proved the integral inequality \begin{equation}\label{shi-tam-Ineq} \int_ΣH\,dΣ\le \int_ΣH_0\, dΣ, \end{equation} which is stronger than (\ref{HoloIneq}) .
We prove that, among all (n + 1)-dimensional spin static vacua with positive cosmological constant, the de Sitter spacetime is characterized by the fact that its spatial Killing hori-zons have minimal modes for the Dirac operator. As a consequence, the de Sitter spacetime is the only vacuum of this type for which the induced metric tensor on some of its Killing horizons is at least equal to that of a round (n -- 1)-sphere. This extends unique-ness theorems shown by Boucher-Gibbons-Horowitz and Chruciel to more general horizon metrics and to the non-single horizon case.
Suppose that $Σ=\partialΩ$ is the $n$-dimensional boundary, with positive (inward) mean curvature $H$, of a connected compact $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian spin manifold $(Ω^{n+1},g)$ whose scalar curvature $R\ge -n(n+1)k^2$, for some $k\textgreater{}0$. If $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion $F$ into the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb{H}^{n+1}\_{-k^2}}$, we define a quasi-local mass and prove its positivity as well as the associated rigidity statement. The proof is based on a holographic principle for the existence of an imaginary Killing spinor. For $n=2$, we also show that its limit, for coordinate spheres in an Asymptotically Hyperbolic (AH) manifold, is the mass of the (AH) manifold.
Let $Ω$ be a compact and mean-convex domain with smooth boundary $Σ:=\partialΩ$, in an initial data set $(M^3,g,K)$, which has no apparent horizon in its interior. If $Σ$ is spacelike in a spacetime $(\E^4,g\_\E)$ with spacelike mean curvature vector $\mathcal{H}$ such that $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion into $\mathbb{R}^3$ with mean curvature $H\_0$, then: \begin{eqnarray*} \int\_Σ|\mathcal{H}|dΣ\leq\int\_Σ\frac{H\_0^2}{|\mathcal{H}|}dΣ. \end{eqnarray*} If equality occurs, we prove that there exists a local isometric immersion of $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ (the Minkowski spacetime) with second fundamental form given by $K$. In Theorem liu-yau-minkowski, we also examine, under weaker conditions, the case where the spacetime is the $(n+2)$-dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1,1}$ and establish a stronger rigidity result.
We prove that an $(n+1)$-dimensional spin static vacuum with negative cosmological constant whose null infinity has a boundary admitting a non-trivial Killing spinor field is the AdS spacetime. As a consequence, we generalize previous uniqueness results by X. Wang \cite{Wa2} and by Chru{ś}ciel-Herzlich \cite{CH} and introduce, for this class of spin static vacua, some Lorentzian manifolds which are prohibited as null infinities.
On a closed 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold, we give a lower bound for the square of the first eigenvalue of the Yamabe operator in terms of the total Branson's Q-curvature. As a consequence, if the manifold is spin, we relate the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator to the total Branson's Q-curvature. On a closed n-dimensional manifold, $n\ge 5$, we compare the three basic conformally covariant operators : the Branson-Paneitz, the Yamabe and the Dirac operator (if the manifold is spin) through their first eigenvalues. Equality cases are also characterized.
In this paper, we establish basic material for future investigations of the analysis and geometry of the twistor bundle, and of differential operators with the twistor bundle as source and/or target, especially the Rarita-Schwinger operator, a first order differential operator taking twistors to twistors.
New extrinsic lower bounds are given for the classical Dirac operator on the boundary of a compact domain of a spin manifold. The main tool is to solve some boundary problems for the Dirac operator of the domain under boundary conditions of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type. Spinorial techniques are used to give simple proofs of classical results for compact embedded hypersurfaces.
Under standard local boundary conditions or certain global APS boundary conditions, we get lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator on compact spin manifolds with boundary. Limiting cases are characterized by the existence of real Killing spinors and the minimality of the boundary.
