Gamow vectors and Borel summability

We analyze the detailed time dependence of the wave function $ψ(x,t)$ for one dimensional Hamiltonians $H=-\partial_x^2+V(x)$ where $V$ (for example modeling barriers or wells) and $ψ(x,0)$ are {\em compactly supported}. We show that the dispersive part of $ψ(x,t)$, its asymptotic series in powers of $t^{-1/2}$, is Borel summable. The remainder, the difference between $ψ$ and the Borel sum, is a convergent expansion of the form $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}g_k Γ_k(x)e^{-γ_k t}$, where $Γ_k$ are the Gamow vectors of $H$, and $γ_k$ are the associated resonances; generically, all $g_k$ are nonzero. For large $k$, $γ_{k}\sim const\cdot k\log k +k^2π^{2}i/4$. The effect of the Gamow vectors is visible when time is not very large, and the decomposition defines rigorously resonances and Gamow vectors in a nonperturbative regime, in a physically relevant way. The decomposition allows for calculating $ψ$ for moderate and large $t$, to any prescribed exponential accuracy, using optimal truncation of power series plus finitely many Gamow vectors contributions. The analytic structure of $ψ$ is perhaps surprising: in general (even in simple examples such as square wells), $ψ(x,t)$ turns out to be $C^\infty$ in $t$ but nowhere analytic on $\RR^+$. In fact, $ψ$ is $t-$analytic in a sector in the lower half plane and has the whole of $\RR^+$ a natural boundary.

Semiclassical analysis of low and zero energy scattering for one dimensional Schrödinger operators with inverse square potentials

This paper studies the scattering matrix $Σ(E;\hbar)$ of the problem \[ -\hbar^2 ψ''(x) + V(x) ψ(x) = Eψ(x) \] for positive potentials $V\in C^\infty(\R)$ with inverse square behavior as $x\to\pm\infty$. It is shown that each entry takes the form $Σ_{ij}(E;\hbar)=Σ_{ij}^{(0)}(E;\hbar)(1+\hbar σ_{ij}(E;\hbar))$ where $Σ_{ij}^{(0)}(E;\hbar)$ is the WKB approximation relative to the {\em modified potential} $V(x)+\frac{\hbar^2}{4} \la x\ra^{-2}$ and the correction terms $σ_{ij}$ satisfy $|\partial_E^k σ_{ij}(E;\hbar)| \le C_k E^{-k}$ for all $k\ge0$ and uniformly in $(E,\hbar)\in (0,E_0)\times (0,\hbar_0)$ where $E_0,\hbar_0$ are small constants. This asymptotic behavior is not universal: if $-\hbar^2\partial_x^2 + V$ has a {\em zero energy resonance}, then $Σ(E;\hbar)$ exhibits different asymptotic behavior as $E\to0$. The resonant case is excluded here due to $V>0$.

Resurgence of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula

The Euler-MacLaurin summation formula relates a sum of a function to a corresponding integral, with a remainder term. The remainder term has an asymptotic expansion, and for a typical analytic function, it is a divergent (Gevrey-1) series. Under some decay assumptions of the function in a half-plane (resp. in the vertical strip containing the summation interval), Hardy (resp. Abel-Plana) prove that the asymptotic expansion is a Borel summable series, and give an exact Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. Using a mild resurgence hypothesis for the function to be summed, we give a Borel summable transseries expression for the remainder term, as well as a Laplace integral formula, with an explicit integrand which is a resurgent function itself. In particular, our summation formula allows for resurgent functions with singularities in the vertical strip containing the summation interval. Finally, we give two applications of our results. One concerns the construction of solutions of linear difference equations with a small parameter. And another concerns the problem of proving resurgence of formal power series associated to knotted objects.

Ionization of a Model Atom: Exact Results and Connection with Experiment

We prove that a model atom having one bound state will be fully ionized by a time periodic potential of arbitrary strength $r$ and frequency $ω$. The survival probability is for small $r$ given by $e^{-Γt}$ for times of order $Γ^{-1} \sim r^{-2n}$, where $n$ is the number of ``photons'' required for ionization, with enhanced stability at resonances. For late times the decay is like $t^{-3}$. Results are for a 1d system with a delta function potential of strength $-g(1 + η(t))$ but comparison with experiments on the microwave ionization of excited hydrogen atoms and with recent analytical work indicate that many features are universal.

Singular normal form for the Painlevé equation P1

We show that there exists a rational change of coordinates of Painlevé's P1 equation $y''=6y^2+x$ and of the elliptic equation $y''=6y^2$ after which these two equations become analytically equivalent in a region in the complex phase space where $y$ and $y'$ are unbounded. The region of equivalence comprises all singularities of solutions of P1 (i.e. outside the region of equivalence, solutions are analytic). The Painlevé property of P1 (that the only movable singularities are poles) follows as a corollary. Conversely, we argue that the Painlevé property is crucial in reducing P1, in a singular regime, to an equation integrable by quadratures.

Correlation between pole location and asymptotic behavior for Painlevé I solutions

We extend the technique of asymptotic series matching to exponential asymptotics expansions (transseries) and show that the extension provides a method of finding singularities of solutions of nonlinear differential equations, using asymptotic information. This transasymptotic matching method is applied to Painlevé's first equation. The solutions of P1 that are bounded in some direction towards infinity can be expressed as series of functions, obtained by generalized Borel summation of formal transseries solutions; the series converge in a neighborhood of infinity. We prove (under certain restrictions) that the boundary of the region of convergence contains actual poles of the associated solution. As a consequence, the position of these exterior poles is derived from asymptotic data. In particular, we prove that the location of the outermost pole $x_p(C)$ on $\RR^+$ of a solution is monotonic in a parameter $C$ describing its asymptotics on antistokes lines$^1$, and obtain rigorous bounds for $x_p(C)$. We also derive the behavior of $x_p(C)$ for large $C\in\CC$. The appendix gives a detailed classical proof that the only singularities of solutions of P1 are poles.

Gaussian Fluctuation in Random Matrices

Let $N(L)$ be the number of eigenvalues, in an interval of length $L$, of a matrix chosen at random from the Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary or Symplectic ensembles of ${\cal N}$ by ${\cal N}$ matrices, in the limit ${\cal N}\rightarrow\infty$. We prove that $[N(L) - \langle N(L)\rangle]/\sqrt{\log L}$ has a Gaussian distribution when $L\rightarrow\infty$. This theorem, which requires control of all the higher moments of the distribution, elucidates numerical and exact results on chaotic quantum systems and on the statistics of zeros of the Riemann zeta function. \noindent PACS nos. 05.45.+b, 03.65.-w
