Strichartz estimates and gallery waves for the irrotational compressible Euler equation in a vacuum setting

We consider the free boundary problem for the irrotational compressible Euler equation in a physical vacuum setting. By using the irrotationality condition in the Eulerian formulation of Ifrim and Tataru, we derive a formulation of the problem in terms of the velocity potential function, which turns out to be an acoustic wave equation that is widely used in solar seismology. This paper is a first step towards understanding what Strichartz estimates are achievable for the aforementioned equation. Our object of study is the corresponding linearized problem in a model case, in which our domain is represented by the upper half-space. For this, we investigate the geodesics corresponding to the resulting acoustic metric, which have multiple periodic reflections next to the boundary. Inspired by their dynamics, we define a class of whispering gallery type modes associated to our problem, and prove Strichartz estimates for them. By using a construction akin to a wave packet, we also prove that one necessarily has a loss of derivatives in the Strichartz estimates for the acoustic wave equation satisfied by the potential function. Conversely, we prove Strichartz estimates for solutions whose degree of regularity is above the aforementioned threshold, which shows that the latter is optimal for our model problem. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results of this kind for the irrotational compressible Euler equations in a physical vacuum.

A conditional Lagrangian clock barrier at the $C^{1,\frac{1}{3}}$ threshold for axisymmetric Euler without swirl

We consider axisymmetric no-swirl solutions to the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations, with initial velocity in $C^{1,α}\cap L^2$, where $α\in\left[\frac{1}{3},1\right)$. In a major breakthrough, Shkoller introduced a clock-and-driver framework that he used in order to prove finite-time type I blow-up below the $C^{1,\frac{1}{3}}$ threshold in this setting. Motivated by this, we define Lagrangian classes of coherent conditional solutions for which the same mechanism yields a supercritical-critical barrier to blow-up when $α\geq\frac{1}{3}$. When $α>\frac{1}{3}$, the aforementioned barrier is genuinely depleted, whereas at the critical endpoint $α=\frac{1}{3}$, we obtain an exponential bound preventing blow-up. In the general case, we formulate a matrix-clock criterion in terms of the smallest singular value of the deformation gradient and show that, under transverse cusp-tail, longitudinal, off-clock, Dini, and suitable geometric coherence hypotheses, this singular value cannot collapse in finite time. In particular, we also show that the class of such coherent solutions includes the smooth ones locally in time. In the on-axis case, the criterion reduces to the scalar clock inequality $\displaystyle \dot{J}(t)\gtrsim -B(t)J(t)-CJ(t)^{3α}$, which rules out Shkoller-type clock collapse for $α\geq\frac{1}{3}$. These results do not enlarge the known Lorentz-space global regularity classes. Rather, they in particular identify the supercritical Lagrangian obstruction dual to Shkoller's subcritical blow-up mechanism in the case $α>\frac{1}{3}$.

Low regularity well-posedness for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic front equation

We consider the well-posedness of the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) front equation. By using the null structure of the equation via a paradifferential normal form analysis, we obtain balanced energy estimates, which allow us to prove the local well-posedness of the non-periodic gSQG front equation at a low level of regularity (in the SQG case, at only one-half derivatives above scaling). In addition, we establish global well-posedness for small and localized rough initial data, as well as modified scattering, by using the testing by wave packet approach of Ifrim-Tataru.

Low regularity solutions for the surface quasi-geostrophic front equation

In this article we consider the low regularity well-posedness of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) front equation. Recent work on other quasilinear models, including the gravity water waves system and nonlinear waves, have demonstrated that in presence of a null structure, a normal form analysis can substantially improve the low regularity theory. In the current article, we observe a null structure in the context of SQG fronts, and establish improved local and global well-posedness results.

Well-posedness for the surface quasi-geostrophic front equation

We consider the well-posedness of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) front equation. Hunter-Shu-Zhang [9] established well-posedness under a small data condition as well as a convergence condition on an expansion of the equation's nonlinearity. In the present article, we establish unconditional large data local well-posedness of the SQG front equation, while also improving the low regularity threshold for the initial data. In addition, we establish global well-posedness theory in the rough data regime by using the testing by wave packet approach of Ifrim-Tataru.

Well-posedness for the dispersive Hunter-Saxton equation

This article represents a first step towards understanding the well-posedness for the dispersive Hunter-Saxton equation. This problem arises in the study of nematic liquid crystals, and although the equation has formal similarities with the KdV equation, the lack of $L^2$ control gives it a quasilinear character, with only continuous dependence on initial data. Here, we prove the local and global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem using a normal form approach to construct modified energies, and frequency envelopes in order to prove the continuous dependence with respect to the initial data.
