Phase-Topology Classification of Memristor Hysteresis Loops via Self-Crossings

Memristive devices have revolutionized non-volatile memory and neuromorphic computing, yet the geometry of their hysteresis loops -- in particular, the occurrence and robustness of multiple self-crossings -- remains poorly understood. Here we introduce a topological and algebraic framework that treats the number of transverse self-intersections of a memristor hysteresis loop as a robust integer-valued invariant. Drawing on differential topology, singularity theory, and cusp catastrophe, we employ discriminants and resultants to stratify the six-dimensional parameter space. This approach partitions the parameter space into structurally stable regions separated by explicitly computable catastrophe surfaces. We demonstrate that the crossing number remains strictly invariant under continuous deformations and changes only at self-tangencies or cusp singularities, thereby providing a complete classification of all multi-lobed hysteresis behaviors. These insights bridge device physics with modern singularity theory and suggest a clear roadmap for exploiting higher-order memory effects in next-generation electronics and brain-inspired hardware.

Bound States in Continuum via Singular Transfer Matrices

In recent years, bound states in continuum (BICs) have gained significant value for practitioners in both theoretical and applied photonics. This paper focuses on devices that utilize non-homogeneous thin patterned laminae. The properties, design principles, and behavior of BICs for this class of devices are frequently explained through a variety of models, ranging from numerical or semi-analytical solutions for the Maxwell equations to heuristic approaches that rely on fitting functions to provide phenomenological descriptions. The field of devices under study has given less attention to approaches that integrate exact analytical solutions of the transfer matrix with numerical data. In this vein, this paper aims to adopt an approach where exact analytical formulas, detailed in our previous manuscript arXiv:2303.06765 (2023), are translated into equations to explore the origins and properties of the bound states in continuum, as well as their practical implementation. The geometric parameters of the device and its operating frequency band emerge from the null space of the transfer matrix.

Closed-form analytical solution for the transfer matrix based on Pendry-MacKinnon discrete Maxwell's equations

Pendry and MacKinnon meaningful discretization of Maxwell's equations was put forward specifically as part of a finite-element numerical algorithm. By contrast with a numerical approach, in the same spirit evoked by the relationships between the difference and the differential equations, we provide an analytical solution for the transfer matrix elements generated by this discretization of Maxwell's equations. The method, valid for all modes and any non-magnetic pattern with frequency-dependent permittivities, is exemplified for a bilaminar structure. The results from hundreds of path-operators simplify to a small number of propagation channels, which transfer the electromagnetic field between input and output. A specific bilaminar device is design-optimized and used to generate a topological map from permittivities to the number of modes and very high Q-factor resonances.
