The chiral phase transition for two-flavour QCD at imaginary and zero chemical potential

The chiral symmetry of QCD with two massless quark flavours gets restored in a non-analytic chiral phase transition at finite temperature and zero density. Whether this is a first-order or a second-order transition has not yet been determined unambiguously, due to the difficulties of simulating light quarks. We investigate the nature of the chiral transition as a function of quark mass and imaginary chemical potential, using staggered fermions on N_t=4 lattices. At sufficiently large imaginary chemical potential, a clear signal for a first-order transition is obtained for small masses, which weakens with decreasing imaginary chemical potential. The second-order critical line m_c(mu_i), which marks the boundary between first-order and crossover behaviour, extrapolates to a finite m_c(mu_i=0) with known critical exponents. This implies a definitely first-order transition in the chiral limit on relatively coarse, N_t=4 lattices.

QCD thermodynamics with O(a) improved Wilson fermions at Nf=2

We present an update of our study of the phase diagram of two-flavour QCD at zero baryon density with dynamical $O(a)$ improved Wilson quarks. All simulations are done on lattices with a temporal extent of $N_t=16$ and spatial extent $L=32,48$ and 64, ensuring that discretisation effects are small and finite size effects can be controlled. In the approach to the chiral limit we currently have three scans with pion masses between 540 and 200 MeV. In this proceedings article the focus is on the new scan at $m_π=200$ MeV and the measurement of screening masses. We also present first results concerning a test of scaling in the approach to the chiral limit and the chiral extrapolation of the difference of screening masses in scalar and pseudoscalar channels, which provides a measure for the strength of the anomalous breaking of the $U_A(1)$ symmetry.

On the definition and interpretation of a static quark anti-quark potential in the colour-adjoint channel

We study possibilities to define a static quark anti-quark pair in a colour-adjoint orientation based on Wilson loops with generator insertions, using both lattice QCD and leading order perturbation theory in various gauges. Non-perturbatively, the only way to obtain non-zero results while maintaining positivity of the Hamiltonian is by some form of temporal gauge. In this case the correlator is equivalent to a gauge invariant correlation function of a static quark anti-quark pair and a static adjoint quark, the resulting three-point potential is attractive. Saturating open colour indices with colour magnetic fields instead also leads to a gauge invariant correlator. However this object is found to couple to the singlet sector only. There appears to be no lattice observable that reproduces the repulsive adjoint potential predicted by perturbation theory in Lorenz or Coulomb gauges.

The QCD equation of state from the lattice

The equation of state of QCD at finite temperatures and baryon densities has a wide range of applications in many fields of modern particle and nuclear physics. It is the main ingredient to describe the dynamics of experimental heavy ion collisions, the expansion of the early universe in the standard model era and the interior of compact stars. On most scales of interest, QCD is strongly coupled and not amenable to perturbative investigations. Over the last decade, first principles calculations using lattice QCD have reached maturity, in the sense that for particular discretisation schemes simulations at the physical point have become possible, finite temperature results near the continuum limit are available and systematic errors begin to be controlled. This review summarises the current theoretical and numerical state of the art based on staggered and Wilson fermions.

Onset Transition to Cold Nuclear Matter from Lattice QCD with Heavy Quarks

Lattice QCD at finite density suffers from a severe sign problem, which has so far prohibited simulations of the cold and dense regime. Here we study the onset of nuclear matter employing a three-dimensional effective theory derived by combined strong coupling and hopping expansions, which is valid for heavy but dynamical quarks and has a mild sign problem only. Its numerical evaluations agree between a standard Metropolis and complex Langevin algorithm, where the latter is free of the sign problem. Our continuum extrapolated data clearly show a first order phase transition building up at $μ_B \approx m_B$ as the temperature approaches zero. An excellent description of the data is achieved by an analytic solution in the strong coupling limit.

Pseudo-Critical Temperature and Thermal Equation of State from $N_f=2$ Twisted Mass Lattice QCD

We report about the current status of our ongoing study of the chiral limit of two-flavor QCD at finite temperature with twisted mass quarks. We estimate the pseudo-critical temperature $T_c$ for three values of the pion mass in the range of $m_\mathrm{PS} \simeq 300$ and $500 \mathrm{MeV}$ and discuss different chiral scenarios. Furthermore, we present first preliminary results for the trace anomaly, pressure and energy density. We have studied several discretizations of Euclidean time up to $N_τ=12$ in order to assess the continuum limit of the trace anomaly. From its interpolation we evaluate the pressure and energy density employing the integral method. Here, we have focussed on two pion masses with $m_\mathrm{PS} \simeq 400$ and $700 \mathrm{MeV}$.

Phase transitions in heavy-quark QCD from an effective theory

With combined hopping parameter and strong coupling expansions, we calculate a dimensionally reduced Polyakov-loop effective theory valid for heavy quarks at nonzero temperature and arbitrary chemical potential. We numerically compute the critical endpoint of the deconfinement transition as a function of quark masses and number of flavours. We also investigate the applicability of the model to the low-T and high density region, specifically in terms of baryon condensation phenomena.

QCD thermodynamics with two flavours of Wilson fermions on large lattices

We explore the phase diagram of two flavour QCD at vanishing chemical potential using dynamical O(a)-improved Wilson quarks. In the approach to the chiral limit we use lattices with a temporal extent of N_t=16 and spatial extent L=32,48 and 64 to enable the extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit with small discretisation effects. In addition to an update on the scans at constant κ, reported earlier, we present first results from scans along lines of constant physics at a pion mass of 290 MeV. We probe the transition using the Polyakov loop and the chiral condensate, as well as spectroscopic observables such as screening masses.

Lattice QCD based on OpenCL

We present an OpenCL-based Lattice QCD application using a heatbath algorithm for the pure gauge case and Wilson fermions in the twisted mass formulation. The implementation is platform independent and can be used on AMD or NVIDIA GPUs, as well as on classical CPUs. On the AMD Radeon HD 5870 our double precision dslash implementation performs at 60 GFLOPS over a wide range of lattice sizes. The hybrid Monte-Carlo presented reaches a speedup of four over the reference code running on a server CPU.

Constraints on the two-flavor QCD phase diagram from imaginary chemical potential

We review our knowledge of the phase diagram of QCD as a function of temperature, chemical potential and quark masses. The presence of tricritical lines at imaginary chemical potential mu=i pi/3 T, with known scaling behaviour in their vicinity, puts constraints on this phase diagram, especially in the case of two light flavors. We show first results in our project to determine the finite-temperature behaviour in the two-flavour chiral limit.

Strong coupling effective theory with heavy fermions

We extend the recently developed strong coupling, dimensionally reduced Polyakov-loop effective theory from finite-temperature pure Yang-Mills to include heavy fermions and nonzero chemical potential by means of a hopping parameter expansion. Numerical simulation is employed to investigate the weakening of the deconfinement transition as a function of the quark mass. The tractability of the sign problem in this model is exploited to locate the critical surface in the (M/T, mu/T, T) space over the whole range of chemical potentials from zero up to infinity.

Status of the QCD phase diagram from lattice calculations

The present knowledge of the QCD phase diagram based on simulations of lattice QCD is summarised. The main questions are whether there is a critical point in the QCD phase diagram and whether it is related to a chiral phase transition. It is shown that QCD at imaginary chemical potentials has a rich phase structure, which can be determined in a controlled way without sign problem and which severely constrains the phase structure at real chemical potentials.

The QCD deconfinement transition for heavy quarks and all baryon chemical potentials

Using combined strong coupling and hopping parameter expansions, we derive an effective three-dimensional theory from thermal lattice QCD with heavy Wilson quarks. The theory depends on traced Polyakov loops only and correctly reflects the centre symmetry of the pure gauge sector as well as its breaking by finite mass quarks. It is valid up to certain orders in the lattice gauge coupling and hopping parameter, which can be systematically improved. To its current order it is controlled for lattices up to N_τ\sim 6 at finite temperature. For nonzero quark chemical potentials, the effective theory has a fermionic sign problem which is mild enough to carry out simulations up to large chemical potentials. Moreover, by going to a flux representation of the partition function, the sign problem can be solved. As an application, we determine the deconfinement transition and its critical end point as a function of quark mass and all chemical potentials.

Towards corrections to the strong coupling limit of staggered lattice QCD

We report on the first steps of an ongoing project to add gauge observables and gauge corrections to the well-studied strong coupling limit of staggered lattice QCD, which has been shown earlier to be amenable to numerical simulations by the worm algorithm in the chiral limit and at finite density. Here we show how to evaluate the expectation value of the Polyakov loop in the framework of the strong coupling limit at finite temperature, allowing to study confinement properties along with those of chiral symmetry breaking. We find the Polyakov loop to rise smoothly, thus signalling deconfinement. The non-analytic nature of the chiral phase transition is reflected in the derivative of the Polyakov loop. We also discuss how to construct an effective theory for non-zero lattice coupling, which is valid to $O(β)$.
