Periodicity in Ergodic Quantum Processes

We study the periodic properties of sequences of quantum channels sampled from an ergodic stochastic process satisfying a natural irreducibility condition. We relate these periodic properties to certain global spectral data defined by the sequence of quantum channels, proving a general Perron-Frobenius-type theorem that in particular constitutes a full generalization of the work of Evans and Høegh-Krohn to the disordered setting.

Reducibility Theory and Ergodic Theorems for Ergodic Quantum Processes

We develop a Perron-Frobenius type theory for products of random quantum channels acting on finite-dimensional matrix algebras sampled from a stationary and ergodic stochastic process, which, in keeping with the literature, we call ergodic quantum processes. This serves as a unifying framework for many models, including i.i.d., Markovian, periodic, and quasiperiodic models. We establish various characterizations of irreducibility, from which we recover a number of general ergodic theorems. We then analyze some specific examples, and, in particular, give a refinement of our theory in the i.i.d. case.

Parent Hamiltonians of Ergodic Matrix Product States

Matrix product states (MPS) are quintessential examples of frustration-free gapped ground states of local interactions called parent Hamiltonians. In this work, we investigate parent Hamiltonians for a class of ergodic matrix product states (EMPS), which are MPS defined by site-dependent random tensors $\{X_j^{[k]}\}_{j=1}^D$ which are homogeneously distributed at every site $k$ in the spin chain. Here, the EMPS are not translation-invariant but rather statistically translation-invariant. Under a mild injectivity assumption, we show the thermodynamic limit of an EMPS is the unique frustration-free ground state of a parent Hamiltonian on the whole spin chain, which, depending on the statistical properties of the EMPS, may or may not be finite-range. In contrast to the translation-invariant regime, these Hamiltonians need not be gapped. Nevertheless, applying the martingale method while keeping track of local statistics gives conditions for a gap, in addition to pointing towards why there need not be a gap in general. We include examples of EMPS both with and without spectral gaps to illustrate our results.

A note on the quantum Wielandt inequality

In this note, we prove that the index of primitivity of any primitive unital Schwarz map is at most $2(D-1)^2$, where $D$ is the dimension of the underlying matrix algebra. This inequality was first proved by Rahaman for Schwarz maps which were both unital and trace preserving. As we show, the assumption of unitality is basically innocuous, but in general not all primitive unital Schwarz maps are trace preserving. Therefore, the precise purpose of this note is to showcase how to apply the method of Rahaman to unital primitive Schwarz maps that don't preserve trace. As a corollary of this theorem, we show that the index of primitivity of any primitive 2-positive map is at most $2(D-1)^2$, so in particular this bound holds for arbitrary primitive completely positive maps. We briefly discuss of how this relates to a conjecture of Perez-Garcia, Verstraete, Wolf and Cirac.

A Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for Bistochastic Ergodic Quantum Processes with Applications to Entanglement

We prove a multiplicative ergodic theorem for bistochastic completely positive (bcp) linear cocycles acting on finite-dimensional matrix algebras, giving an invariant splitting described explicitly in terms of the multiplicative domains of the underlying bcp maps. As an application of our theorem, we classify when compositions of random bcp maps are asymptotically entanglement breaking, and use this classification to show that occasionally PPT bcp maps are asymptotically entanglement breaking. We conclude by demonstrating a certain class of bcp linear cocycles are almost surely entanglement breaking in finite time.

Ergodic Theorems for Quantum Trajectories under Disordered Generalized Measurements

We consider quantum trajectories arising from disordered, repeated generalized measurements, which have the structure of Markov chains in random environments (MCRE) with dynamically-defined transition probabilities; we call these disordered quantum trajectories. Under the assumption that the underlying disordered open quantum dynamical system approaches a unique equilibrium in time averages, we establish a strong law of large numbers for measurement outcomes arising from disordered quantum trajectories, which follows after we establish general annealed ergodic theorems for the corresponding MCRE. The type of disorder our model allows includes the random settings where the disorder is i.i.d. or Markovian, the periodic (resp. quasiperiodic) settings where the disorder has periodic (resp. quasiperiodic) structure, and the nonrandom setting where the disorder is constant through time. In particular, our work extends the earlier noise-free results of Kümmerer and Maassen to the present disordered framework.

Asymptotic Purification of Quantum Trajectories under Random Generalized Measurements

We develop a general framework to study quantum trajectories resulting from repeated random measurements subject to stationary noise, and generalize results of Kümmerer and Maassen to this setting. The resulting trajectory of quantum states is a time-inhomogeneous Markov chain in a random environment. Kümmerer and Maassen introduced the concept of dark subspaces for noise-free processes, establishing that their absence is equivalent to asymptotic purification of the system state. We clarify the notion of dark subspaces in the disordered setting by defining a measurable correspondence consisting of a collection of random subspaces satisfying a darkness condition. We further prove that asymptotic purification occurs if and only if this collection of random dark subspaces is empty. Several examples of these phenomena are provided.
