Topology-Aware Two-Stage Federated Learning via Proxy Models for Sub-THz Heterogeneous LEO Communications

Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising distributed training paradigm for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) networks by significantly reducing communication overhead. However, its deployment faces critical challenges, e.g., topology-induced model staleness, short contact windows, and unaddressed computing heterogeneity. To address these issues, a topology-aware two-stage FL framework is proposed in this paper. First, a multi-layer physical architecture utilizing high-altitude platforms (HAPs) and Sub-THz communications is designed to extend satellite-ground contact windows and enlarge available bandwidth. Second, a proxy-model-based approach is adopted to fully utilize heterogeneous resources and enable architecture-agnostic knowledge aggregation. Finally, building upon these foundations, a topology-aware two-stage aggregation mechanism is proposed as the central algorithmic design to overcome the topology-induced staleness. The mechanism dynamically partitions LEO satellites into localized groups based on their transient HAP coverage. Within each group, LEO satellites perform asynchronous aggregation at their associated HAP to naturally tolerate computational delays without penalizing faster nodes. Subsequently, a synchronous inter-group aggregation is executed among all HAPs at the Ground Station (GS) to strictly bound the maximum staleness and guarantee stable global convergence. Numerical results demonstrate the proposed framework extends contact windows and achieves 86.59%--90.57% test accuracy, outperforming the state-of-the-art heterogeneous baseline by 16.26\%--19.80\%. Furthermore, it achieves a 1.5x to 2.2x convergence speedup, which closely approaches the ideal upper bound.

A Three-Dimensional Path Loss Model for THz Band Aerial Communications

Accurate characterization of Terahertz (THz) band path loss is critical for reliable high-frequency communication, especially in aerial networks where transceivers may operate at different altitudes. Existing THz-band path loss models for aerial networks focus on horizontal or vertical transceiver deployments, and fall short at modeling the random 3D geometry of transceiver locations. To address this limitation, we propose a new analytical THz path loss model that incorporates arbitrary 3D geometry of transceiver locations and frequency-selective absorption, obtained through a two-dimensional regression. We validate our proposed model with the propagation data collected via the Atmospheric Model (am) tool for multiple aerial link types, including drone-to-drone (Dr2Dr), medium-altitude aerial communication (MAAC), high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicles~(UAV)-to-UAV (U2U) links over varying transceiver separation and sub-THz to low-THz spectrum, i.e., 0.1--1~THz. The proposed framework provides a unified and accurate model for analyzing and designing future high-frequency aerial communication systems.

Half-Duplex or Full-Duplex Communications: Degrees of Freedom Analysis under Self-Interference

In-band full-duplex (FD) communication provides a promising alternative to half-duplex (HD) for wireless systems, due to increased spectral efficiency and capacity. In this paper, HD and FD radio implementations of two way, two hop and two way two hop communication are compared in terms of degrees of freedom (DoF) under a realistic residual self-interference (SI) model. DoF analysis is carried out for each communication scenario for HD, antenna conserved (AC) and RF chain conserved (RC) FD radio implementations. The DoF analysis indicates that for the two way channel, the achievable AC FD with imperfect SI cancellation performs strictly below HD, and RC FD DoF trade-off is superior when the SI can be sufficiently cancelled. For the two hop channel, FD is better when the relay has large number of antennas and enough SI cancellation. For the two way two hop channel, when both nodes require similar throughput, the achievable DoF pairs for FD do not outperform HD. FD still can achieve better DoF pairs than HD, provided the relay has sufficient number of antennas and SI suppression.

Half-Duplex or Full-Duplex Relaying: A Capacity Analysis under Self-Interference

In this paper multi-antenna half-duplex and full-duplex relaying are compared from the perspective of achievable rates. Full-duplexing operation requires additional resources at the relay such as antennas and RF chains for self-interference cancellation. Using a practical model for the residual self-interference, full-duplex achievable rates and degrees of freedom are computed for the cases for which the relay has the same number of antennas or the same number of RF chains as in the half-duplex case, and compared with their half-duplex counterparts. It is shown that power scaling at the relay is necessary to maximize the the degrees of freedom in the full-duplex mode.
