On Sidorenko's conjecture for determinants and Gaussian Markov random fields

We study a class of determinant inequalities that are closely related to Sidorenko's famous conjecture (Also conjectured by Erd\H os and Simonovits in a different form). Our main result can also be interpreted as an entropy inequality for Gaussian Markov random fields (GMRF). We call a GMRF on a finite graph $G$ homogeneous if the marginal distributions on the edges are all identical. We show that if $G$ is bipartite then the differential entropy of any homogeneous GMRF on $G$ is at least $|E(G)|$ times the edge entropy plus $|V(G)|-2|E(G)|$ times the point entropy. We also show that in the case of non-negative correlation on edges, the result holds for an arbitrary graph $G$. The connection between Sidorenko's conjecture and GMRF's is established via a large deviation principle on high dimensional spheres combined with graph limit theory. Connection with Ihara zeta function and the number of spanning trees is also discussed.

Short survey on stable polynomials, orientations and matchings

This is a short survey about the theory of stable polynomials and its applications. It gives self-contained proofs of two theorems of Schrijver. One of them asserts that for a $d$--regular bipartite graph $G$ on $2n$ vertices, the number of perfect matchings, denoted by $\mathrm{pm}(G)$, satisfies $$\mathrm{pm}(G)\geq \bigg( \frac{(d-1)^{d-1}}{d^{d-2}} \bigg)^{n}.$$ The other theorem claims that for even $d$ the number of Eulerian orientations of a $d$--regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, denoted by $\varepsilon(G)$, satisfies $$\varepsilon(G)\geq \bigg(\frac{\binom{d}{d/2}}{2^{d/2}}\bigg)^n.$$ To prove these theorems we use the theory of stable polynomials, and give a common generalization of the two theorems.

Matchings in regular graphs: minimizing the partition function

For a graph $G$ on $v(G)$ vertices let $m_k(G)$ denote the number of matchings of size $k$, and consider the partition function $M_{G}(λ)=\sum_{k=0}^nm_k(G)λ^k$. In this paper we show that if $G$ is a $d$--regular graph and $0<λ<(4d)^{-2}$, then $$\frac{1}{v(G)}\ln M_G(λ)>\frac{1}{v(K_{d+1})}\ln M_{K_{d+1}}(λ).$$ The same inequality holds true if $d=3$ and $λ<0.3575$. More precise conjectures are also given.

Covers, orientations and factors

Given a graph $G$ with only even degrees let $\varepsilon(G)$ denote the number of Eulerian orientations, and let $h(G)$ denote the number of half graphs, that is, subgraphs $F$ such that $d_F(v)=d_G(v)/2$ for each vertex $v$. Recently, Borbényi and Csikvári proved that $\varepsilon(G)\geq h(G)$ holds true for all Eulerian graphs with equality if and and only if $G$ is bipartite. In this paper we give a simple new proof of this fact, and we give identities and inequalities for the number of Eulerian orientations and half graphs of a $2$-cover of a graph $G$.

Note on the zero-free region of the hard-core model

In this paper we prove a new zero-free region for the partition function of the hard-core model, that is, the independence polynomials of graphs with largest degree $Δ$. This new domain contains the half disk $$D=\left\{ λ\in \mathbb{C}\ |\ \mathrm{Re}(λ)\geq 0, |λ|\leq \frac{7}{8}\tan \left( \fracπ{2(Δ-1)}\right)\right\}.$$

Counting degree-constrained subgraphs and orientations

The goal of this short paper to advertise the method of gauge transformations (aka holographic reduction, reparametrization) that is well-known in statistical physics and computer science, but less known in combinatorics. As an application of it we give a new proof of a theorem of A. Schrijver asserting that the number of Eulerian orientations of a $d$--regular graph on $n$ vertices with even $d$ is at least $\left(\frac{\binom{d}{d/2}}{2^{d/2}}\right)^n$. We also show that a $d$--regular graph with even $d$ has always at least as many Eulerian orientations as $(d/2)$--regular subgraphs.

Co-adjoint polynomial

In this note we study a certain graph polynomial arising from a special recursion. This recursion is a member of a family of four recursions where the other three recursions belong to the chromatic polynomial, the modified matching polynomial, and the adjoint polynomial, respectively. The four polynomials share many common properties, for instance all of them are of exponential type, i. e., they satisfy the identity $$\sum_{S\subseteq V(G)}f(G[S],x)f(G[V\setminus S],y)=f(G,x+y)$$ for every graph $G$. It turns out that the new graph polynomial is a specialization of the Tutte polynomial.

Extremal regular graphs: the case of the infinite regular tree

In this paper we study the following problem. Let $A$ be a fixed graph, and let $\hom(G,A)$ denote the number of homomorphisms from a graph $G$ to $A$. Furthermore, let $v(G)$ denote the number of vertices of $G$, and let $\mathcal{G}_d$ denote the family of $d$--regular graphs. The general problem studied in this paper is to determine $$\inf_{G\in \mathcal{G}_d}\hom(G,A)^{1/v(G)}.$$ It turns out that in many instances the infimum is not achieved by a finite graph, but a sequence of graphs with girth (i. e., length of the shortest cycle) tending to infinity. In other words, the optimization problem is solved by the infinite $d$--regular tree. We prove this type of results for the number of independent sets of bipartite graphs, evaluations of the Tutte-polynomial, Widom-Rowlinson configurations, and many more graph parameters. Our main tool will be a transformation called $2$-lift.

Lower matching conjecture, and a new proof of Schrijver's and Gurvits's theorems

Friedland's Lower Matching Conjecture asserts that if $G$ is a $d$--regular bipartite graph on $v(G)=2n$ vertices, and $m_k(G)$ denotes the number of matchings of size $k$, then $$m_k(G)\geq {n \choose k}^2\left(\frac{d-p}{d}\right)^{n(d-p)}(dp)^{np},$$ where $p=\frac{k}{n}$. When $p=1$, this conjecture reduces to a theorem of Schrijver which says that a $d$--regular bipartite graph on $v(G)=2n$ vertices has at least $$\left(\frac{(d-1)^{d-1}}{d^{d-2}}\right)^n$$ perfect matchings. L. Gurvits proved an asymptotic version of the Lower Matching Conjecture, namely he proved that $$\frac{\ln m_k(G)}{v(G)}\geq \frac{1}{2}\left(p\ln \left(\frac{d}{p}\right)+(d-p)\ln \left(1-\frac{p}{d}\right)-2(1-p)\ln (1-p)\right)+o_{v(G)}(1).$$ In this paper, we prove the Lower Matching Conjecture. In fact, we will prove a slightly stronger statement which gives an extra $c_p\sqrt{n}$ factor compared to the conjecture if $p$ is separated away from $0$ and $1$, and is tight up to a constant factor if $p$ is separated away from $1$. We will also give a new proof of Gurvits's and Schrijver's theorems, and we extend these theorems to $(a,b)$--biregular bipartite graphs.

Sidorenko's conjecture, colorings and independent sets

Let $\hom(H,G)$ denote the number of homomorphisms from a graph $H$ to a graph $G$. Sidorenko's conjecture asserts that for any bipartite graph $H$, and a graph $G$ we have $$\hom(H,G)\geq v(G)^{v(H)}\left(\frac{\hom(K_2,G)}{v(G)^2}\right)^{e(H)},$$ where $v(H),v(G)$ and $e(H),e(G)$ denote the number of vertices and edges of the graph $H$ and $G$, respectively. In this paper we prove Sidorenko's conjecture for certain special graphs $G$: for the complete graph $K_q$ on $q$ vertices, for a $K_2$ with a loop added at one of the end vertices, and for a path on $3$ vertices with a loop added at each vertex. These cases correspond to counting colorings, independent sets and Widom-Rowlinson colorings of a graph $H$. For instance, for a bipartite graph $H$ the number of $q$-colorings $\textrm{ch}(H,q)$ satisfies $$\textrm{ch}(H,q)\geq q^{v(H)}\left(\frac{q-1}{q}\right)^{e(H)}.$$ In fact, we will prove that in the last two cases (independent sets and Widom-Rowlinson colorings) the graph $H$ does not need to be bipartite. In all cases, we first prove a certain correlation inequality which implies Sidorenko's conjecture in a stronger form.

The Widom-Rowlinson model, the hard-core model and the extremality of the complete graph

Let $H_{\mathrm{WR}}$ be the path on $3$ vertices with a loop at each vertex. D. Galvin conjectured, and E. Cohen, W. Perkins and P. Tetali proved that for any $d$-regular simple graph $G$ on $n$ vertices we have $$\hom(G,H_{\mathrm{WR}})\leq \hom(K_{d+1},H_{\mathrm{WR}})^{n/(d+1)}.$$ In this paper we give a short proof of this theorem together with the proof of a conjecture of Cohen, Perkins and Tetali. Our main tool is a simple bijection between the Widom-Rowlinson model and the hard-core model on another graph. We also give a large class of graphs $H$ for which we have $$\hom(G,H)\leq \hom(K_{d+1},H)^{n/(d+1)}.$$ In particular, we show that the above inequality holds if $H$ is a path or a cycle of even length at least $6$ with loops at every vertex.

Benjamini--Schramm continuity of root moments of graph polynomials

Recently, M.\ Abért and T.\ Hubai studied the following problem. The chromatic measure of a finite simple graph is defined to be the uniform distribution on its chromatic roots. Abért and Hubai proved that for a Benjamini-Schramm convergent sequence of finite graphs, the chromatic measures converge in holomorphic moments. They also showed that the normalized log of the chromatic polynomial converges to a harmonic real function outside a bounded disc. In this paper we generalize their work to a wide class of graph polynomials, namely, multiplicative graph polynomials of bounded exponential type. A special case of our results is that for any fixed complex number $v_0$ the measures arising from the Tutte polynomial $Z_{G_n}(z,v_0)$ converge in holomorphic moments if the sequence $(G_n)$ of finite graphs is Benjamini--Schramm convergent. This answers a question of Abért and Hubai in the affirmative. Even in the original case of the chromatic polynomial, our proof is considerably simpler.

The Density Turán problem

Let $H$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let the blow-up graph $G[H]$ be defined as follows. We replace each vertex $v_i$ of $H$ by a cluster $A_i$ and connect some pairs of vertices of $A_i$ and $A_j$ if $(v_i,v_j)$ was an edge of the graph $H$. As usual, we define the edge density between $A_i$ and $A_j$ as $d(A_i,A_j)=\frac{e(A_i,A_j)}{|A_i||A_j|}.$ We study the following problem. Given densities $γ_{ij}$ for each edge $(i,j)\in E(H)$. Then one has to decide whether there exists a blow-up graph $G[H]$ with edge densities at least $γ_{ij}$ such that one cannot choose a vertex from each cluster so that the obtained graph is isomorphic to $H$, i.e, no $H$ appears as a transversal in $G[H]$. We call $d_{crit}(H)$ the maximal value for which there exists a blow-up graph $G[H]$ with edge densities $d(A_i,A_j)=d_{crit}(H)$ $((v_i,v_j)\in E(H))$ not containing $H$ in the above sense. Our main goal is to determine the critical edge density and to characterize the extremal graphs.

Matchings in vertex-transitive bipartite graphs

A theorem of A. Schrijver asserts that a $d$-regular bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices has at least $$\left(\frac{(d-1)^{d-1}}{d^{d-2}}\right)^n$$ perfect matchings. L. Gurvits gave an extension of Schrijver's theorem for matchings of density $p$. In this paper we give a stronger version of Gurvits's theorem in the case of vertex-transitive bipartite graphs. This stronger version in particular implies that for every positive integer $k$, there exists a positive constant $c(k)$ such that if a $d$-regular vertex-transitive bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at most $k$, then it has at least $$\left(\frac{(d-1)^{d-1}}{d^{d-2}}+c(k)\right)^n$$ perfect matchings. We also show that if $(G_i)$ is a Benjamini--Schramm convergent graph sequence of vertex-transitive bipartite graphs, then $$\frac{\ln pm(G_i)}{v(G_i)}$$ is convergent, where $pm(G)$ and $v(G)$ denote the number of perfect matchings and the number of vertices of $G$, respectively. We also show that if $G$ is $d$-regular vertex-transitive bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices and $m_k(G)$ denote the number of matchings of size $k$, and $$M(G,t)=1+m_1(G)t+m_2(G)t^2+\dots +m_n(G)t^n=\prod_{k=1}^n(1+γ_k(G)t),$$ where $γ_1(G)\leq \dots \leq γ_n(G)$, then $$γ_k(G)\geq \frac{d^2}{4(d-1)}\frac{k^2}{n^2},$$ and $$\frac{m_{n-1}(G)}{m_n(G)}\leq \frac{2}{d}n^2.$$ The latter result improves on a previous bound of C. Kenyon, D. Randall and A. Sinclair. There are examples of $d$-regular bipartite graphs for which these statements fail to be true without the condition of vertex-transitivity.

Matching measure, Benjamini-Schramm convergence and the monomer-dimer free energy

We define the matching measure of a lattice L as the spectral measure of the tree of self-avoiding walks in L. We connect this invariant to the monomer-dimer partition function of a sequence of finite graphs converging to L. This allows us to express the monomer-dimer free energy of L in terms of the measure. Exploiting an analytic advantage of the matching measure over the Mayer series then leads to new, rigorous bounds on the monomer-dimer free energies of various Euclidean lattices. While our estimates use only the computational data given in previous papers, they improve the known bounds significantly.

Graph homomorphisms between trees

In this paper we study several problems concerning the number of homomorphisms of trees. We give an algorithm for the number of homomorphisms from a tree to any graph by the Transfer-matrix method. By using this algorithm and some transformations on trees, we study various extremal problems about the number of homomorphisms of trees. These applications include a far reaching generalization of Bollobás and Tyomkyn's result concerning the number of walks in trees. Some other highlights of the paper are the following. Denote by $\hom(H,G)$ the number of homomorphisms from a graph $H$ to a graph $G$. For any tree $T_m$ on $m$ vertices we give a general lower bound for $\hom(T_m,G)$ by certain entropies of Markov chains defined on the graph $G$. As a particular case, we show that for any graph $G$, $$\exp(H_λ(G))λ^{m-1}\leq\hom(T_m,G),$$ where $λ$ is the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$ and $H_λ(G)$ is a certain constant depending only on $G$ which we call the spectral entropy of $G$. In the particular case when $G$ is the path $P_n$ on $n$ vertices, we prove that $$\hom(P_m,P_n)\leq \hom(T_m,P_n)\leq \hom(S_m,P_n),$$ where $T_m$ is any tree on $m$ vertices, and $P_m$ and $S_m$ denote the path and star on $m$ vertices, respectively. We also show that if $T_m$ is any fixed tree and $$\hom(T_m,P_n)>\hom(T_m,T_n),$$ for some tree $T_n$ on $n$ vertices, then $T_n$ must be the tree obtained from a path $P_{n-1}$ by attaching a pendant vertex to the second vertex of $P_{n-1}$. All the results together enable us to show that $$ |\End(P_m)|\leq|\End(T_m)|\leq|\End(S_m)|, $$ where $\End(T_m)$ is the set of all endomorphisms of $T_m$ (homomorphisms from $T_m$ to itself).
