A continuous-mode quantum-optical representation of finite strong-field laser pulses in free space

We formulate an energy-consistent quantum-optical representation of finite paraxial laser pulses in free space. The formulation is based on a continuous-mode description and provides a step toward a unified treatment of coherent and nonclassical strong-field drivers. Starting from plane-wave quantization, we construct a transverse vector-mode reduction in which the selected mode can reproduce an arbitrary normalized spatial--polarization profile. For a coherent pulse, the measured pulse energy and full laboratory analytic signal determine the frequency-dependent coherent-state displacement $(α(ω))$, without introducing a physical quantization volume. For nonclassical pulses, the same first-order field data and total energy do not uniquely specify the quantum state. Additional correlation information or model assumptions are required. We incorporate this information through normal and anomalous covariance kernels and discuss $g^{(2)}$-based diagnostics of squeezed pulses. We also derive a phase-sensitive convergence criterion for numerical frequency-bin discretizations. An exactly solvable continuum-mode free-electron application shows that the coherent displacement reproduces the semiclassical mean trajectory, whereas the field covariances determine the electron wave packet width. The framework offers a convenient, energy-consistent interface between measured free-space pulses and quantum-optical calculations.

Wave packet motion in a quantized electromagnetic field: Analytic results

We investigate the dynamics of a charged particle interacting with a multimode quantized electromagnetic field and obtain an analytic solution for the full electron--field system. This framework enables the calculation of position expectation values and uncertainties for arbitrary wave packets and field states, allowing us to identify quantum corrections to the corresponding classical motion. While the corrections to the position expectation value are weak and largely insensitive to the quantum state of the field, the wave packet broadening exhibits a pronounced dependence on the field state. In particular, the quantum uncertainty of the radiation is directly imprinted onto the spatial uncertainty of the particle. We illustrate these effects for Gaussian wave packets interacting with coherent, Fock, and squeezed states, including bright squeezed vacuum. The interaction with a finite-duration laser pulse is also analyzed as a multimode example. Our results provide a transparent analytic route toward understanding how quantum fluctuations of light influence electron dynamics in strong-field settings.

MIR laser CEP estimation using machine learning concepts in bulk high harmonic generation

Monitoring the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) is of paramount importance for experiments involving few cycle intense laser fields. Common measurement techniques include f-2f interferometry or stereo-ATI setups. These approaches are adequate, but are challenging to implement on demand, at different locations as additional metrology tools, in intense few cycle laser-matter interaction experiments, such as those prevalent in sophisticated user beamlines. In addition there are inherent difficulties for CEP measured at non-conventional laser wavelengths (like e.g. mid infrared) and measurements above 10 kHz laser repetition rates, on single shot basis. Here we demonstrate both by simulations and by experiments a machine learning (ML) driven method for CEP estimation in the mid infrared, which is readily generalizable for any laser wavelength and possibly up to MHz repetition rates. The concept relies on the observation of the spectrum of high harmonic generation (HHG) in bulk material and the use of ML techniques to estimate the CEP of the laser. Once the ML model is trained, the method provides a way for cheap and compact real-time CEP tagging. This technique can complement the otherwise sophisticated monitoring of CEP, and is able to capture the complex correlation between the CEP and the observable HHG spectra.

Parametric model for high-order harmonic generation with quantized fields

A quantum optical model for the high-order harmonic generation is presented, in which both the exciting field and the high harmonic modes are quantized, while the target material appears via parameters only. As a consequence, the model is independent from the excited material system to a large extent, and allows us to focus on the properties of the electromagnetic fields. Technically, the Hamiltonian known for parametric down-conversion is adopted, where photons in the $n$th harmonic mode are created in exchange of annihilating $n$ photons from the fundamental mode. In our treatment, initially the fundamental mode is in a coherent state corresponding to large photon numbers, while the high harmonic modes are in vacuum state. Due to the interaction, the latter modes get populated while the fundamental one loses photons. Analytical approximations are presented for the time evolution that are verified by numerically exact calculations. For multimode, finite bandwith excitation, the time dependence of the high-order harmonic radiation is also given.

Diatomic molecule in a strong infrared laser field: level-shifts and bond-length change due to laser-dressed Morse potential

We present a general mathematical procedure to handle interactions described by a Morse potential in the presence of a strong harmonic excitation. We account for permanent and field-induced terms and their gradients in the dipole moment function, and we derive analytic formulae for the bond-length change and for the shifted energy eigenvalues of the vibrations, by using the Kramers-Henneberger frame. We apply these results to the important cases of $\mathrm{H}_{2}$ and $\mathrm{LiH}$, driven by a near- or mid-infrared laser in the $10^{13}$ $\mathrm{ W/cm^2}$ intensity range.

A quantum optical description of photon statistics and cross-correlations in high harmonic generation

We present a study of photon statistics associated with high-order harmonic generation (HHG) involving one-mode and intermodal correlations of the high harmonic photons. The aim of the paper is to give insight into the nonclassical properties of high-order harmonic modes. To this end, we use a simplified model describing an elementary quantum emitter: the model of a two-level atom. While the material system is extremely simplified in this description, the conclusions and the methods may be generalized for more complex cases. Our primary interest is an effective model of HHG in which the exciting pulse is classical, and the harmonics are quantized, although we touch upon the more generalized, fully quantized model as well. Evolution of the Mandel-parameter, photon antibunching, squeezing and cross-correlations are calculated. Results imply that with respect to a single quantized emitter, nonclassicality of the harmonics is present: sub-Poissonian photon statistic and squeezing can characterize certain optical modes, while strong anticorrelation can also be present.

High-order harmonics as induced by a quantized field:a phase-space picture

The interaction of matter with a quantized electromagnetic mode is considered. Representing a strong exciting field, the mode is assumed to contain a large number of photons. As a result, the material response is highly nonlinear: the completely quantized description results in generation of high harmonics. In order to understand the essence of the physical processes that are involved, we consider a finite dimensional model for the material system. Using an appropriate description in phase space, this approach leads to a transparent picture showing that the interaction splits the initial, exciting coherent state into parts, and the rapid change of the populations of these parts (that are coherent states themselves) results in the generation of high-order harmonics as secondary radiation. The method we use is an application of the discrete lattice of coherent states that was introduced by J. von Neumann.

Laser induced distortion of band structure in solids: an analytic model

We consider a spatially periodic (cosine) potential as a model for a crystalline solid that interacts with a harmonically oscillating external electric field. This problem is periodic both in space and time and can be solved analytically using the Kramers-Henneberger co-moving frame. By analyzing the stability of the closely related Mathieu-type differential equation, the electronic band structure can be obtained. We demonstrate that by changing the field intensity, the width of the zero-field band gaps can be drastically modified, including the special case when the external field causes the band gaps to disappear

Scattering of charged particles on two spatially separated time-periodic optical fields

We consider a monoenergetic beam of moving charged particles interacting with two separated oscillating electric fields. Time-periodic linear potential is assumed to model the light-particle interaction using a nonrelativistic, quantum mechanical description based on Gordon-Volkov states. Applying Floquet theory, we calculate transmission probabilities as a function of the laser field parameters. The transmission resonances in this Ramsey-like setup are interpreted as if they originated from a corresponding static double-potential barrier with heights equal to the ponderomotive potential resulting from the oscillating field. Due to the opening of new "Floquet channels," the resonances are repeated at input energies when the corresponding frequency is shifted by an integer multiple of the exciting frequency. These narrow resonances can be used as precise energy filters. The fine structure of the transmission spectra is determined by the phase difference between the two oscillating light fields, allowing for the optical control of the transmission.

Interference-induced phenomena in high-order harmonic generation from bulk solids

We consider a quantum mechanical model for the high-order harmonic generation in bulk solids. The bandgap is assumed to be considerably larger than the exciting photon energy. Using dipole approximation, the dynamical equations for different initial Bloch states are decoupled in the velocity gauge. Although there is no quantum mechanical interference between the time evolution of different initial states, the complete harmonic radiation results from the interference of fields emitted by all the initial (valence band) states. In particular, this interference is shown to be responsible for the suppression of the even order harmonics. The number of the observable harmonics (essentially the cutoff) is also determined by electromagnetic field interference.

A quantum optical model for the dynamics of high harmonic generation

We investigate a two-level atom in the field of a strong laser pulse. The resulting time-dependent polarization is the source of a radiation the frequency components of which are essentially harmonics of the driving field's carrier frequency. The time evolution of this secondary radiation is analyzed in terms of the expectation values of the photon number operators for a large number of electromagnetic modes that are initially in the vacuum state. Our method is based on a multimode version of the Jaynes-Cummings-Paul model and can be generalized to different radiating systems as well. We show, that after the exciting pulse, the final distribution of the photon numbers is close to the conventional (Fourier transform-based) power spectrum of the secondary radiation. The details of the high harmonic spectra are also analyzed, for many-cycle excitations a clear physical interpretation can be given in terms of the Floquet quasi-energies. A first step towards the determination of the photon statistics of the HHG modes reveals states with slightly super-Poissonian distribution.

Relativistic electron transport through an oscillating barrier: wave packet generation and Fano-type resonances

Transport properties of massive Dirac particles are investigated through an oscillating barrier. The Floquet quasienergies related to the time-dependent potential appear both in transmission and reflection as sidebands around the incoming electron's energy. We take all relevant sidebands into account and present time averaged transmission and reflection probabilities in a wide energy range. Most qualitative features of scattering on a static barrier -- like Klein paradox -- are still visible, but the transmission probability in the evanescent regime observably increases due to the oscillation of the potential. The strongly inelastic scattering process is shown to lead to multiple Fano-type resonances and temporal trapping of the particles inside the oscillating potential. We also present a detailed study of the time evolution of the wave packets generated in the scattering process. Our results can be relevant for graphene with an induced energy gap.

Oscillating spin-orbit interaction in two-dimensional superlattices: sharp transmission resonances and time-dependent spin polarized currents

We consider ballistic transport through a lateral, two-dimensional superlattice with experimentally realizable, sinusoidally oscillating Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. The periodic structure of the rectangular lattice produces a spin-dependent miniband structure for static SOI. Using Floquet theory, transmission peaks are shown to appear in the mini-bandgaps as a consequence of the additional, time-dependent SOI. A detailed analysis shows that this effect is due to the generation of harmonics of the driving frequency, via which e.g., resonances that cannot be excited in the case of static SOI become available. Additionally, the transmitted current shows space and time-dependent partial spin-polarization, in other words, polarization waves propagate through the superlattice.

Quantum walk on the line with quantum rings

We propose a scheme to implement the one-dimensional coined quantum walk with electrons transported through a two-dimensional network of spintronic semiconductor quantum rings. The coin degree of freedom is represented by the spin of the electron, while the discrete position of the walker corresponds to the label of the rings in one of the spatial directions in the network. We assume that Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction is present in the rings, the strength of which can be tuned by an external electric field. The geometry of the device, together with the appropriate spin-orbit interaction strengths, ensure the realization of the coin-toss (i.e. spin-flip) and the step operator.
