Infinite measure mixing for some mechanical systems

We show that if an infinite measure preserving system is well approximated on most of the phase space by a system satisfying the local limit theorem, then the original system enjoys mixing with respect to global observables, that is, the observables which admit an infinite volume average. The systems satisfying our conditions include the Lorentz gas with Coulomb potential, the Galton board and piecewise smooth Fermi-Ulam pingpongs.

Global observables for random walks: law of large numbers

We consider the sums $T_N=\sum_{n=1}^N F(S_n)$ where $S_n$ is a random walk on $\mathbb Z^d$ and $F:\mathbb Z^d\to \mathbb R$ is a global observable, that is, a bounded function which admits an average value when averaged over large cubes. We show that $T_N$ always satisfies the weak Law of Large Numbers but the strong law fails in general except for one dimensional walks with drift. Under additional regularity assumptions on $F$, we obtain the Strong Law of Large Numbers and estimate the rate of convergence. The growth exponents which we obtain turn out to be optimal in two special cases: for quasiperiodic observables and for random walks in random scenery.

Local equilibrium in planar non interacting particle systems

Particles are injected to a large planar rectangle through the boundary. Assuming that the particles move independently from one another and the boundary is also absorbing, we identify a set of abstract conditions which imply the local equilibrium of the particle density in diffusive scaling limit. We verify that our abstract conditions hold in two examples: iid random walks and the periodic Lorentz process.

Statistical properties of type D dispersing billiards

We consider dispersing billiard tables whose boundary is piecewise smooth and the free flight function is unbounded. We also assume there are no cusps. Such billiard tables are called type D in the monograph of Chernov and Markarian. For a class of non-degenerate type D dispersing billiards, we prove exponential decay of correlation and several other statistical properties.

On mixing and the local central limit theorem for hyperbolic flows

We formulate abstract conditions under which a suspension flow satisfies the local central limit theorem. We check the validity of these conditions for several systems including reward renewal processes, Axiom A flows, as well as the systems admitting Young tower, such as Sinai billiard with finite horizon, suspensions over Pomeau-Manneville maps, and geometric Lorenz attractors.

Infinite measure renewal theorem and related results

We present abstract conditions under which a special flow over a probability preserving map with a non-integrable roof function is Krickeberg mixing. Our main condition is some version of the local central limit theorem for the underlying map. We check our assumptions for iid random variables (renewal theorem with infinite mean) and for suspensions over Pomeau-Manneville maps.

On the limiting Markov process of energy exchanges in a rarely interacting ball-piston gas

We analyse the process of energy exchanges generated by the elastic collisions between a point-particle, confined to a two-dimensional cell with convex boundaries, and a `piston', i.e. a line-segment, which moves back and forth along a one-dimensional interval partially intersecting the cell. This model can be considered as the elementary building block of a spatially extended high-dimensional billiard modeling heat transport in a class of hybrid materials exhibiting the kinetics of gases and spatial structure of solids. Using heuristic arguments and numerical analysis, we argue that, in a regime of rare interactions, the billiard process converges to a Markov jump process for the energy exchanges and obtain the expression of its generator.

Logarithmic scaling of planar random walk's local times

We prove that the local time process of a planar simple random walk, when time is scaled logarithmically, converges to a non-degenerate pure jump process. The convergence takes place in the Skorokhod space with respect to the $M1$ topology and fails to hold in the $J1$ topology.

The first encounter of two billiard particles of small radius

We prove that the time of the first collision between two particles in a Sinai billiard table converges weakly to an exponential distribution when time is rescaled by the inverse of the radius of the particles. This results provides a first step in studying the energy evolution of hard ball systems in the rare interaction limit.

Number of Distinct Sites Visited by a Random Walk with Internal States

In the classical paper of Dvoretzky-Erdős, asymptotics for the expected value and the variance of the number of distinct sites visited by a Simple Symmetric Random Walk were calculated. Here, these results are generalized for Random Walks with Internal States. Moreover, both weak and strong laws of large numbers are proved. As a tool for these results, the error term of the local limit theorem in of Krámli and Szász is also estimated.

Recurrence properties of a special type of Heavy-Tailed Random Walk

In the proof of the invariance principle for locally perturbed periodic Lorentz process with finite horizon, a lot of delicate results were needed concerning the recurrence properties of its unperturbed version. These were analogous to the similar properties of Simple Symmetric Random Walk. However, in the case of Lorentz process with infinite horizon, the analogous results for the corresponding random walk are not known, either. In this paper, these properties are ascertained for the appropriate random walk (this happens to be in the non normal domain of attraction of the normal law). As a tool, an estimation of the remainder term in the local limit theorem for the corresponding random walk is computed.

Local equilibrium in inhomogeneous stochastic models of heat transport

We extend the duality of Kipnis Marchioro and Presutti to inhomogeneous lattice gas systems where either the components have different degrees of freedom or the rate of interaction depends on the spatial location. Then the dual process is applied to prove local equilibrium in the hydrodynamic limit for some inhomogeneous high dimensional systems andin the nonequilibrium steady state for one dimensional systems with arbitrary inhomogeneity.
