Lifting all elements in $\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})$

We show that every element of $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})$ can be lifted to an element of $\mathrm{SL}_{n}(\mathbb{Z})$ of norm at most $Cq^2\log q$, while there exists an element such that every lift of it is of norm at least $q^{2+o(1)}$. This should be compared to the recent result that almost every element has a lift of norm bounded by $q^{1+1/n+o(1)}$. The main step in the proof is showing that for every $q$, there is a small element in $(\mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z})^\times$ with a large $n$-th root, which is a result of independent interest.

Counting rationals and diophantine approximation in missing-digit Cantor sets

We establish a new upper bound for the number of rationals up to a given height in a missing-digit set, making progress towards a conjecture of Broderick, Fishman, and Reich. This enables us to make novel progress towards another conjecture of those authors about the corresponding intrinsic diophantine approximation problem. Moreover, we make further progress towards conjectures of Bugeaud--Durand and Levesley--Salp--Velani on the distribution of diophantine exponents in missing-digit sets. A key tool in our study is Fourier $\ell^1$ dimension introduced by the last named author in [H. Yu, Rational points near self-similar sets, arXiv:2101.05910]. An important technical contribution of the paper is a method to compute this quantity.

Exponential multiple mixing for commuting automorphisms of a nilmanifold

Let $l\in \mathbb{N}_{\geq 1}$ and $α: \mathbb{Z}^l\rightarrow \text{Aut}(\mathscr{N})$ be an action of $\mathbb{Z}^l$ by automorphisms on a compact nilmanifold $\mathscr{N}$. We assume the action of every $α(z)$ is ergodic for $z\in \mathbb{Z}^l\smallsetminus\{0\}$ and show that $α$ satisfies exponential $n$-mixing for any integer $n\geq 2$. This extends results of Gorodnik and Spatzier [Acta Math., 215 (2015)].

Self-similar measures associated to a homogeneous system of three maps

We study the dimension of self-similar measures associated to a homogeneous iterated function system of three contracting similarities on $\bf R$ and other more general IFS's. We extend some of the theory recently developed for Bernoulli convolutions to this setting. In the setting of three maps a new phenomenon occurs, which has been highlighted by recent examples of Baker, and Bárány, Käenmäki. To overcome the difficulties stemming form these, we develop novel techniques, including an extension of Hochman's entropy increase method to a function field setup.

Cut-off phenomenon for the ax+b Markov chain over a finite field

We study the Markov chain $x_{n+1}=ax_n+b_n$ on a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$, where $a \in \mathbb{F}_p$ is fixed and $b_n$ are independent and identically distributed random variables in $\mathbb{F}_p$. Conditionally on the Riemann hypothesis for all Dedekind zeta functions, we show that the chain exhibits a cut-off phenomenon for most primes $p$ and most values of $a \in \mathbb{F}_p$. We also obtain weaker, but unconditional, upper bounds for the mixing time.

On the multiplicative group generated by two primes in $\mathbf{Z}/Q\mathbf{Z}$

We study the action of the multiplicative group generated by two prime numbers in $\mathbf{Z}/Q\mathbf{Z}$. More specifically, we study returns to the set $([-Q^\varepsilon,Q^\varepsilon]\cap \mathbf{Z})/Q\mathbf{Z}$. This is intimately related to the problem of bounding the greatest common divisor of $S$-unit differences, which we revisit. Our main tool is the $S$-adic subspace theorem.

Self-similar sets and measures on the line

We discuss the problem of determining the dimension of self-similar sets and measures on $\mathbf{R}$. We focus on the developments of the last four years. At the end of the paper, we survey recent results about other aspects of self-similar measures including their Fourier decay and absolute continuity.

Fourier decay of self-similar measures and self-similar sets of uniqueness

In this paper, we investigate the Fourier transform of self-similar measures on R. We provide quantitative decay rates of Fourier transform of some self-similar measures. Our method is based on random walks on lattices and Diophantine approximation in number fields. We also completely identify all self-similar sets which are sets of uniqueness. This generalizes a classical result of Salem and Zygmund.

Entropy of Bernoulli convolutions and uniform exponential growth for linear groups

The exponential growth rate of non polynomially growing subgroups of $GL_d$ is conjectured to admit a uniform lower bound. This is known for non-amenable subgroups, while for amenable subgroups it is known to imply the Lehmer conjecture from number theory. In this note, we show that it is equivalent to the Lehmer conjecture. This is done by establishing a lower bound for the entropy of the random walk on the semigroup generated by the maps $x\mapsto λ\cdot x\pm 1$, where $λ$ is an algebraic number. We give a bound in terms of the Mahler measure of $λ$. We also derive a bound on the dimension of Bernoulli convolutions.

Mixing time of the Chung--Diaconis--Graham random process

Define $(X_n)$ on $\mathbf{Z}/q\mathbf{Z}$ by $X_{n+1} = 2X_n + b_n$, where the steps $b_n$ are chosen independently at random from $-1, 0, +1$. The mixing time of this random walk is known to be at most $1.02 \log_2 q$ for almost all odd $q$ (Chung--Diaconis--Graham, 1987), and at least $1.004 \log_2 q$ (Hildebrand, 2008). We identify a constant $c = 1.01136\dots$ such that the mixing time is $(c+o(1))\log_2 q$ for almost all odd $q$. In general, the mixing time of the Markov chain $X_{n+1} = a X_n + b_n$ modulo $q$, where $a$ is a fixed positive integer and the steps $b_n$ are i.i.d. with some given distribution in $\mathbf{Z}$, is related to the entropy of a corresponding self-similar Cantor-like measure (such as a Bernoulli convolution). We estimate the mixing time up to a $1+o(1)$ factor whenever the entropy exceeds $(\log a)/2$.

The structure theory of Nilspaces III: Inverse limit representations and topological dynamics

This paper forms the third part of a series by the authors [GMV1,GMV2] concerning the structure theory of nilspaces. A nilspace is a compact space $X$ together with closed collections of cubes $C^n(X)\subseteq X^{2^n}$, $n=1,2,\ldots$, satisfying some natural axioms. Our goal is to extend the structure theory of nilspaces obtained by Antolín Camarena and Szegedy, and to provide new proofs. Our main result is that, under the technical assumption that $C^n(X)$ is a connected space for all $n$, then $X$ is isomorphic (in a strong sense) to an inverse limit of nilmanifolds. This is a direct and slight generalization of the main result of Antolín Camarena and Szegedy. We also apply our methods to obtain structure theorems in the setting of topological dynamics. Specifically, if $H$ is a group (subject to very mild topological assumptions) and $(H,X)$ is a minimal dynamical system, then we give a simple characterization of the maximal pronilfactor of $X$. This generalizes the case $H = \mathbb{Z}$, which is a theorem of Host, Kra and Maass, although even in that case we give a significantly different proof.

Irreducibility of random polynomials of large degree

We consider random polynomials with independent identically distributed coefficients with a fixed law. Assuming the Riemann hypothesis for Dedekind zeta functions, we prove that such polynomials are irreducible and their Galois groups contain the alternating group with high probability as the degree goes to infinity. This settles a conjecture of Odlyzko and Poonen conditionally on RH for Dedekind zeta functions.

Expansion of coset graphs of PSL_2(F_p)

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $H_1,H_2<G$ be two subgroups. In this paper, we are concerned with the bipartite graph whose vertices are $G/H_1\cup G/H_2$ and a coset $g_1H_1$ is connected with another coset $g_2H_2$ if and only if $g_1H_1\cap g_2 H_2\neq\varnothing$. The main result of the paper establishes the existence of such graphs with large girth and large spectral gap. Lubotzky, Manning and Wilton use such graphs to construct certain infinite groups of interest in geometric group theory.
