Collectivity-induced quenching of signatures for shell closures

Mass differences are an often used as signature and measure for shell closure. Using the angular-momentum projected Generator Coordinate Method and the Skyrme interaction SLy4, we analyze the modification of mass differences due to static deformation and dynamic fluctuations around the mean-field ground state.

Configuration mixing of angular-momentum and particle-number projected triaxial HFB states using the Skyrme energy density functional

We present a method based on mean-field states generated by triaxial quadrupole constraints which are projected on particle number and angular momentum and mixed by the generator coordinate method on the quadrupole moment. This method is equivalent to a seven-dimensional GCM calculation, mixing all five degrees of freedom of the quadrupole operator and the gauge angles for protons and neutrons. A first application to Mg24 permits to analyze in detail the effects of triaxial deformations and of K-mixing.

Large-amplitude Qn-Qp collectivity in the neutron-rich oxygen isotope 20O

By means of HFB calculations with independent constraints on axial neutron and proton quadrupole moments Q_n and Q_p, we investigate the large amplitude isoscalar and isovector deformation properties of the neutron-rich isotope 20O. Using the particle-number and angular-momentum projected Generator Coordinate Method, we analyze the collective dynamics in the {Q_n, Q_p} plane. The parameterization SLy4 of the Skyrme interaction is used for all calculations in connection with a density-dependent zero-range pairing interaction. Our results show that already for this moderately neutron-rich nucleus the transition moments are modified when independent neutron and proton collective dynamics are allowed.

Global study of the spectroscopic properties of the first 2+ state in even-even nuclei

We discuss the systematics of the 2+ excitation energy and the transition probability from this 2+ to the ground state for most of the even-even nuclei, from O16 up to the actinides, for which data are available. To that aim we calculate their correlated J=0 ground state and J=2 first excited state by means of the angular-momentum and particle-number projected generator coordinate method, using the axial mass quadrupole moment as the generator coordinate and self-consistent mean-field states only restricted by axial, parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The calculation, which is an extension of a previous systematic calculation of correlations in the ground state, is performed within the framework of a non-relativistic self-consistent mean-field model using the same Skyrme interaction SLy4 and a density-dependent pairing force to generate the mean-field configurations and mix them.

Tetrahedral correlations in $^{80}$Zr and $^{98}$Zr

Axial octupole and tetrahedral correlations in $^{80}$Zr and $^{98}$Zr have been investigated using the generator coordinate method, applied to a basis generated by Skyrme HF+BCS calculations. We focus on the possible presence of states with tetrahedral symmetry and their stability with respect to octupole vibrations. We show that pairing significantly reduces the stability of the tetrahedral configuration and that a shallow mean-field tetrahedral minimum coexists with an axial octupole minimum. The contributions to the correlation energies coming from the tetrahedral degree of freedom and octupole axial deformation are discussed.

Quantum fluctuations and stability of tetrahedral deformations in atomic nuclei

The possible existence of stable axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations is investigated in $^{80}$Zr and $^{98}$Zr. HFBCS calculations with parity projection have been performed for various parametrizations of the Skyrme energy functional. The correlation and excitation energies of negative parity states associated with shape fluctuations have been obtained using the generator coordinate method (GCM). The results indicate that in these nuclei both the axial octupole and tetrahedral deformations are of dynamic character and possess similar characteristics. Various Skyrme forces give consistent results as a function of these two octupole degrees of freedom both at the mean-field level as well as for configuration mixing calculations.

Shape coexistence in neutron-deficient Kr isotopes: Constraints on the single-particle spectrum of self-consistent mean-field models from collective excitations

We discuss shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient Kr72-Kr78 isotopes in the framework of configuration mixing calculations of particle-number and angular-momentum projected axial mean-field states obtained from self-consistent calculations with the Skyrme interaction SLy6 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. While our calculation reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively many of the global features of these nuclei, such as coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes, their strong mixing at low angular momentum, and the deformation of collective bands, the ordering of our calculated low-lying levels is at variance with experiment. We analyse the role of the single-particle spectrum of the underlying mean-field for the spectrum of collective excitations.

Beyond mean-field study of excited states: Analysis within the Lipkin model

Beyond mean-field methods based on restoration of symmetries and configuration mixing by the generator coordinate method (GCM) enable to calculate on the same footing correlations in the ground state and the properties of excited states. Excitation energies are often largely overestimated, especially in nuclei close to magicity, even when transition probabilities are well-described. We analyse here the origin of this failure. The first part of the paper compares realistic projected GCM and QRPA calculations for selected Sn isotopes performed with the same effective Skyrme interaction. Although it is difficult to perform RPA and GCM calculations under exactly the same conditions, this comparison shows that the projected GCM overestimates the RPA results. In the second part of this paper, we compare GCM and RPA in the framework of the exactly solvable Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. We show that the discretized GCM works quite well and permits to obtain nearly exact results with a small number of discretization points. This analysis indicates also that to break more symmetries of the nuclear Hamiltonian in the construction of the GCM basis is probably the best way to improve the description of excited states by the GCM.

Global study of quadrupole correlation effects

We discuss the systematics of ground-state quadrupole correlations of binding energies and mean-square charge radii for all even-even nuclei, from O16 up to the superheavies, for which data are available. To that aim we calculate their correlated J=0 ground state by means of the angular-momentum and particle-number projected generator coordinate method, using the axial mass quadrupole moment as the generator coordinate and self-consistent mean-field states only restricted by axial, parity, and time-reversal symmetries. The calculation is performed within the framework of a non-relativistic self-consistent mean-field model using the same non-relativistic Skyrme interaction SLy4 and a density-dependent pairing force to generate the mean-field configurations and mix them. (See the paper for the rest of the abstract).

Microscopic models for exotic nuclei

Starting from successful self-consistent mean-field models, this paper discusses why and how to go beyond the mean field approximation. To include long-range correlations from fluctuations in collective degrees of freedom, one has to consider symmetry restoration and configuration mixing, which give access to ground-state correlations and spectroscopy.

Systematics of quadrupolar correlation energies

We calculate correlation energies associated with the quadrupolar shape degrees of freedom with a view to improving the self-consistent mean-field theory of nuclear binding energies. The Generator Coordinate Method is employed using mean-field wave functions and the Skyrme SLy4 interaction. Systematic results are presented for 605 even-even nuclei of known binding energies, going from mass A=16 up to the heaviest known. The correlation energies range from 0.5 to 6.0 MeV in magnitude and are rather smooth except for large variations at magic numbers and in light nuclei. Inclusion of these correlation energies in the calculated binding energy is found to improve two deficiencies of the Skyrme mean field theory. The pure mean field theory has an exaggerated shell effect at neutron magic numbers and addition of the correlation energies reduce it. The correlations also explain the phenomenon of mutually enhanced magicity, an interaction between neutron and proton shell effects that is not explicable in mean field theory.

Microscopic study of 240Pu, mean-field and beyond

The influence of exact angular-momentum projection and configuration mixing on properties of a heavy, well-deformed nucleus is discussed for the example of Pu240. Starting from a self-consistent model using Skyrme interactions, we analyze the resulting modifications of the deformation energy, the fission barrier height, the excitation energy of the superdeformed minimum associated with the fission isomer, the structure of the lowest rotational bands with normal deformation and superdeformation, and the corresponding quadrupole moments and transition moments. We present results obtained with the Skyrme interactions SLy4 and SLy6, which have slightly different surface tensions.

Excitation Energies and Spins of the Yrast Superdeformed Band in ^{191}Hg

The excitation energies and spins of the levels in the yrast superdeformed band of $^{191}$Hg have been determined from two single-step $γ$ transitions and the quasi-continuum spectrum connecting the superdeformed and normal-deformed states. The results are compared with those from theoretical mean-field calculations with different interactions. A discussion of pairing in superdeformed states is also included.

Configuration mixing of angular momentum projected self-consistent mean-field states for neutron-deficient Pb isotopes

We study the low-lying collective excitation spectra of the neutron-deficient lead isotopes Pb182-Pb194 by performing a configuration mixing of angular-momentum and particle-number projected self-consistent mean-field states. The same Skyrme interaction SLy6 is used supplemented by a density-dependent zero-range pairing force. This study supports the interpretation of spectra made on the grounds of more schematic models in terms of coexisting spherical, oblate, prolate and superdeformed prolate structures. The model qualitatively reproduces the variation of the spectra with neutron number. Our results for E0 and E2 transition probabilities are compared with the few existing experimental data. Finally, we predict the presence of superdeformed bands at low excitation energy in the most neutron-deficient isotopes.

Correlation energies by the generator coordinate method: computational aspects for quadrupolar deformations

We investigate truncation schemes to reduce the computational cost of calculating correlations by the generator coordinate method based on mean-field wave functions. As our test nuclei, we take examples for which accurate calculations are available. These include a strongly deformed nucleus, 156Sm, a nucleus with strong pairing, 120Sn, the krypton isotope chain which contains examples of soft deformations, and the lead isotope chain which includes the doubly magic 208Pb. We find that the Gaussian overlap approximation for angular momentum projection is effective and reduces the computational cost by an order of magnitude. Cost savings in the deformation degrees of freedom are harder to realize. A straightforward Gaussian overlap approximation can be applied rather reliably to angular-momentum projected states based on configuration sets having the same sign deformation (prolate or oblate), but matrix elements between prolate and oblate deformations must be treated with more care. We propose a two-dimensional GOA using a triangulation procedure to treat the general case with both kinds of deformation. With the computational gains from these approximations, it should be feasible to carry out a systematic calculation of correlation energies for the nuclear mass table.

Self-consistent approach to deformation of intruder states in neutron-deficient Pb and Po

We present systematic calculations of the properties of 11- isomers in neutron-deficient 184-198Pb and 188-200Po. These states are based on the proton (h9/2 i13/2)_{K = 11-} configuration. They are calculated in the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with a Skyrme interaction and density-dependent pairing force. The energies and deformations of the 11- states are compared to those of the intruder 0+ states in both Pb and Po isotopes. In the most neutron-deficient Po isotopes, the calculations predict, below a weakly oblate 11- state, another oblate 11- state which is even more deformed than the intruder oblate 11- state in their Pb isotones. The energies and quadrupole moments of the 11- isomers, corresponding to a weakly oblate nuclear shape, are in fair agreement with the available experimental data.

Beyond-mean-field-model analysis of low-spin normal-deformed and superdeformed collective states of S32, Ar36, Ar38 and Ca40

We investigate the coexistence of spherical, deformed and superdeformed states at low spin in S32, Ar36, Ar38 and Ca40. The microscopic states are constructed by configuration mixing of BCS states projected on good particle number and angular momentum. The BCS states are themselves obtained from Hartree-Fock BCS calculations using the Skyrme interaction SLy6 for the particle-hole channel, and a density-dependent contact force in the pairing channel. The same interaction is used within the Generator Coordinate Method to determine the configuration mixing and calculate the properties of even-spin states with positive parity. Our calculations underestimate moments of inertia. Nevertheless, for the four nuclei, the global structural properties of the states of normal deformation as well as the recently discovered superdeformed bands up to spin 6 are correctly reproduced with regard to both the energies and the transition rates.
