The central stars of the planetary nebulae NGC 7027 and NGC 6543

Infrared spectra of NGC 7027 and NGC 6543 ranging from 2.4 to 45 micron were obtained with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory. A first analysis of these spectra, with the aid of photo-ionization models, is presented. We report the first detection of the Ar VI 4.53 micron and Ne VI 7.65 micron lines in the spectrum of NGC 7027. When compared with older observations it is clear that the Ar VI line and possibly also other lines have increased in strength since 1981. We argue that a likely explanation for this variability is a change in the spectral energy distribution of the central star, possibly an increase in effective temperature. However, this result needs to be confirmed by further observations. We also report a non-detection of the O IV 25.9 micron line and the first detection of the Na III 7.32 micron line in the spectrum of NGC 6543. The non-detection is not expected based on a blackbody approximation for the spectrum of the central star. The ionization threshold for O(3+) is just beyond the He II limit, and the absence of this line shows that the stellar flux drops at least by a factor 350 at the He II limit. Modeling the O IV line may prove to be a valuable test for atmosphere models.

The spectral evolution of post-AGB stars

A parameter study of the spectral evolution of a typical post-AGB star, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the infrared colours, is presented. The models are based on the latest evolutionary tracks for hydrogen burning post-AGB stars. For such tracks the evolutionary rate is very dependent on the assumed mass loss rate as a function of time. We investigate this effect by modifying the mass loss prescription. The newly calculated evolutionary rates and density distributions are used to model the spectral evolution of a post-AGB star with the photo-ionization code Cloudy, including dust in the radiative transfer. Different assumptions for the dust properties and dust formation are considered. It is shown that by varying these parameters in a reasonable way, entirely different paths are followed in the IRAS colour-colour diagram. First of all, the effects of the evolution of the central star on the expanding dust shell can not be neglected. Also the dust properties and the definition of the end of the AGB phase have an important effect. The model tracks show that objects occupying the same location in the IRAS colour-colour diagram can have a different evolutionary past, and therefore the position in the IRAS colour-colour diagram alone can not a priori give a unique determination of the evolutionary status of an object. An alternative colour-colour diagram, the K-[12] vs. [12]-[25] diagram, is presented. The tracks in this diagram seem less affected by particulars of the grain emission. This diagram may be a valuable additional tool for studying post-AGB evolution.

Photo-ionization modelling of planetary nebulae -- II. Galactic bulge nebulae, a comparison with literature results

We have constructed photo-ionization models of five galactic bulge planetary nebulae using our automatic method which enables a fully self-consistent determination of the physical parameters of a planetary nebula. The models are constrained using the spectrum, the IRAS and radio fluxes and the angular diameter of the nebula. We also conducted a literature search for physical parameters determined with classical methods for these nebulae. Comparison of the distance independent physical parameters with published data shows that the stellar temperatures generally are in good agreement and can be considered reliable. The literature data for the electron temperature, electron density and also for the abundances show a large spread, indicating that the use of line diagnostics is not reliable and that the accuracy of these methods needs to be improved. Comparison of the various abundance determinations indicates that the uncertainty in the electron temperature is the main source of uncertainty in the abundance determination. The stellar magnitudes predicted by the photo-ionization models are in good agreement with observed values.
