Dielectric relaxation in the quantum multiferroics Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$

Motivated by the recent discovery of dielectric relaxation by quantum critical magnons in Cs$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, we conduct a detailed analysis of its dielectric response and compare it to that in the isostructural compound Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$. Measurements in the vicinity of the field-induced magnon softening show that its description in terms of 3D Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons quantum critical point is unaltered by the presence of dielectric relaxation. We also demonstrate the existence of dielectric relaxation anomalies at 19 K in Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ and discuss the implications for the microscopic origin of dielectric activity in two compounds.

AD 775 Pulse of Cosmogenic Radionuclides Production as Imprint of a Galactic Gamma-Ray Burst

We suggest an explanation of a sharp increase in the abundance of cosmogenic radiocarbon found in tree rings dated AD 775. The increase could originate from high-energy irradiation of the atmosphere by a galactic gamma-ray burst. We argue that, unlike a cosmic ray event, a gamma-ray burst does not necessarily result in a substantial increase in long-lived 10Be atmospheric production. At the same time, the 36Cl nuclide would be generated in the amounts detectable in the corresponding ice core samples from Greenland and Antarctica. These peculiar features allow experimental discrimination of nuclide effects caused by gamma-ray bursts and by powerful proton events.

Collective quantum coherent oscillations in a globally coupled array of qubits

We report a theoretical study of coherent collective quantum dynamic effects in an array of N qubits (two-level systems) incorporated into a low-dissipation resonant cavity. Individual qubits are characterized by energy level differences $Δ_i$ and we take into account a spread of parameters $Δ_i$. Non-interacting qubits display coherent quantum beatings with N different frequencies, i.e. $ω_i=Δ_i/\hbar$ . Virtual emission and absorption of cavity photons provides a long-range interaction between qubits. In the presence of such interaction we analyze quantum correlation functions of individual qubits $C_i(t)$ to obtain two collective quantum-mechanical coherent oscillations, characterized by frequencies $ω_1=\barΔ/\hbar$ and $ω_2=\tildeω_R$, where $\tildeω_R$ is the resonant frequency of the cavity renormalized by interaction. The amplitude of these oscillations can be strongly enhanced in the resonant case when $ω_1 \simeq ω_2$.

Biphoton Double-Bell States and Ququarts with "Invisible" Variables

We analyze features of mixed biphoton polarization states which arise from pure states of polarization-frequency biphoton ququarts after averaging over frequencies of photons. For mixed states we find their concurrence C, Schmidt parameter K and degree of polarization P, as well as the von Neumann mutual information I. In some simple cases we find also the relative entropy S_{rel} and the degree of classical correlations C_{cl}. We show that in mixed states the Schmidt parameter does not characterize anymore the degree of entanglement, as it does in pure states. Nevertheless, the Schmidt parameter remains useful even in the case of mixed states because it remains directly related to the degree of polarization. We compare results occurring in the cases of full pure polarization-frequency states of ququarts, mixed states (averaged over frequencies) and states with separated high- and low-frequency parts. Differences between these results can be seen in experiments with and without a dichroic beam-splitter, as well as with and without frequency filters in front of detector.

Gaussian modeling and Schmidt modes of SPDS biphoton states

A double-Gaussian model and the Schmidt modes are found for the biphoton wave function characterizing spontaneous parametric down-conversion with the degenerate collinear phase-matching of the type I and with a pulsed pump. The obtained results are valid for all durations of the pump pulses, short, long and intermediately long.

Frequency and temporal entanglement of biphoton states in spontaneous parametric down conversion with a short-pulse pump

Spectral and temporal coincidence and single-particle photon wave packets are described and their widths and durations are found. The degree of entanglement is characterized by the experimentally measurable parameter R defined as the ratio of the coincidence and single-particle spectral widths. In the frequency representation, this parameter is found as a function of the pump-pulse duration. This function is shown to have a minimum and even in the minimum, at rather natural conditions, the parameter R is found to be very high (R=73>>1). The Schmidt number K is found for both short and long pump pulses and interpolated for arbitrary pulse durations. All functional dependences of R and K are found to be identical and numerical difference between them is shown to be not exceeding 20%. Two-time temporal wave function of a biphoton state is investigated in details, and a rather significant difference between the cases of short and long pump pulses is found to occur. In the case of long pulses, the temporal parameter R is defined as the ratio of durations of the single-particle and coincidence signals, and the defined in such a way parameter R is shown to be very close to the Schmidt number K.

Anisotropically high entanglement of biphotons generated in spontaneous parametric down conversion

We show that the wave packet of a biphoton generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion is strongly anisotropic. Its anisotropic features manifest themselves very clearly in comparison of measurements performed in two different schemes: when the detector scanning plane is perpendicular or parallel to the plane containing the crystal optical axis and the laser axis. The first of these two schemes is traditional whereas the second one gives rise to such unexpected new results as anomalously strong narrowing of the biphoton wave packet measured in the coincidence scheme and very high degree of entanglement. The results are predicted theoretically and confirmed experimentally.
