High-precision measurement of the space-like $η^\prime$ transition form factor

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $20.3\ \text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of $3.773\ \text{GeV}$ at the BEPCII collider, we report a precision measurement of the product $Q^2|F(Q^2)|$, where $F(Q^2)$ is the single-virtual space-like transition form factor of the $η'$ meson and $Q^2$ is the squared momentum transfer of the tagged virtual photon. The transition form factor is extracted from the differential Born cross section of the two-photon fusion processes $e^+e^- \to e^+e^-γγ^* \to e^+e^-η^\prime$ using a single-tag technique, where only one scattered lepton is detected. The measurement covers $Q^2 \in [0.1, 6.0]$ GeV$^2$, achieving unprecedented precision, better than $3.0\%$ for $Q^2 < 1.5$ GeV$^2$, and providing the first direct determination at $Q^2 < 0.3$ GeV$^2$.

Model-independent measurement of the transversity amplitudes of the $B^0\to K^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decay

An analysis of the decay amplitudes of $B^0 \to K^{*0}(\to K^+π^-)μ^+μ^-$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb$^{-1}$. The amplitudes are constructed from Legendre polynomials in the $μ^+μ^-$ invariant mass squared region $1.1<q^2<8.0$ GeV$^2/c^4$. $C\!P$-averaged observables are obtained from the amplitudes. Some of these observables present deviations with respect to the Standard Model, which can be interpreted as shifts in the effective Wilson coefficients. This model-independent approach enables tests of theoretical predictions that can help disentangle hadronic effects from potential contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. This allows flexibility in the choice of $q^2$ binning for global analyses. Depending on the binning scheme, the deviation of the Wilson coefficient $C_9$ from its Standard Model expectation varies from $4.3σ$ to $4.8σ$.

Measurement of $γ$ using $B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\rightarrow Dπ^{\pm}$ decays with $D\rightarrow K_{\rm S}^{0}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $D\rightarrow K_{\rm S}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$

A measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using the decay channels $B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm}\rightarrow Dπ^{\pm}$, where the $D$ meson decays to $D\rightarrow K_{\rm S}^{0}π^{+}π^{-}$ or $D\rightarrow K_{\rm S}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$, is performed with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.8 fb$^{-1}$, collected during 2024 by the upgraded LHCb experiment. $C\!P$ violation is observed through a difference in the distributions of the Dalitz plot of the $D$ decay between the $B^{+}$ and $B^{-}$ mesons. The CKM angle $γ$ is determined to be $γ=(68.1\pm 6.7)^{\circ}$. Other parameters related to the examined $B$ meson decay modes are also measured. This is the first measurement of the CKM angle $γ$ using the upgraded LHCb detector.

$C\!P$ violation analysis of local and nonlocal amplitudes in the $\overline{B}^0 \to \overline{K}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decay

A search for $C\!P$ violation in the $\overline{B}^0 \to \overline{K}^{*0}μ^+μ^-$ decay is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment during Run 1 and Run 2, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.4 fb$^{-1}$. The analysis exploits the full angular distribution of the decay, providing sensitivity to $C\!P$-violating effects in both vector and axial-vector contributions to this flavour-changing neutral-current process. The complex Wilson coefficients are determined within the Weak Effective Theory through an unbinned maximum-likelihood fit to the angular observables, incorporating nonlocal hadronic amplitudes across the full dimuon mass spectrum. The precision of the $C\!P$-violation observables is improved by an order of magnitude relative to previous measurements, with the imaginary parts of the Wilson coefficients now determined more precisely than the real parts. No significant $C\!P$ violation is observed, and the results are consistent with Standard Model.

Observation of $Λ^+_c\to nπ^+η$ and search for $Λ^+_c\to na_0(980)^+$

By analysing 6.1 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected at center-of-mass energies between $\sqrt{s}=4.600$ and 4.843 $\rm GeV$ with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we observe the decay $Λ_c^+\to nπ^+η$ for the first time with a statistical significance of $9.5σ$. The ratio of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to nπ^+η)/\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to Λπ^+η)$ is measured to be $0.155\pm0.031_{\rm stat.}\pm0.012_{\rm syst.}$ Taking the world average of $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to Λπ^+η)$ as reference, the absolute branching fraction is calculated to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to nπ^+η)=(2.94\pm0.59_{\rm stat.}\pm0.23_{\rm syst.}\pm0.13_{\rm ref.})\times10^{-3}$. The intermediate process $Λ_c^+\to na_0(980)^+$ is also searched for in the $π^+η$ invariant mass spectrum. Since no significant signal is found, the upper limit on $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to na_0(980)^+)\times\mathcal{B}(a_0(980)^+\toπ^+η)$ is set to $8.4\times10^{-4}$ at 90\% confidence level. A sophisticated deep learning approach using a Transformer-based architecture is employed to distinguish signals from prevalent hadronic backgrounds, complemented by thorough validation and systematic uncertainty quantification.

Search for the charged lepton flavour violating decay $η'\to eμ$

Based on $(8998\pm40)\times10^6$ $J/ψ$ events collected in $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 3.097$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we present a search for the charged lepton flavour violating decay $η'\to eμ$ with $J/ψ\toγη'$. No significant signal is observed, and an upper limit on its decay branching fraction is set to be $6.3\times10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level, improving the previous best result by nearly three orders of magnitude.

New measurements of $B^+_c$ decays into single charm final states

Using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9 \,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment, searches are performed for $B^+_c$ mesons decaying to a charm and a charmless meson pair. Five products of branching fraction, ${\cal B}(B^+_c\!\to DX)$, and fragmentation ratio $f_c\big/f_u$ are reported, \begin{align*} R_{D^+ K^{*0}} &= ( 1.42 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.11 ) \times 10^{-6}, \\ R_{D^{*0} K^+} &= (1.46 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.05 ) \times 10^{-6}, \\ R_{D^+_s ϕ}\ \ \ &= ( 4.0\pm 1.3 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-7 }, \\ R_{D^0 K^+}\ &= ( 9.7 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.3 ) \times 10^{-7}, \\ R_{D^0 π^+}\ &<\ 1.4 \times 10^{-7}\ \text{at 95\% CL}. \end{align*} In each case, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third includes external uncertainties. The first result is a first observation, the second and third exhibit clear evidence and the fourth improves the precision of previous measurements by a factor two. Additionally, the $CP$ asymmetry in $B^+_c\!\to D^0 K^+$ decays is measured and found to be compatible with zero.

Modification of $Υ$ production in $p$O and OO collisions at LHCb

The production rates of $\mathitΥ(2S)$ and $\mathitΥ(3S)$ mesons relative to that of the $\mathitΥ(1S)$ state are measured in $pp$, $p$O, and OO collisions by the LHCb collaboration. The ratios measured in $pp$ data are consistent with previous LHCb measurements at different center-of-mass energies. Only slight relative suppression of the $\mathitΥ(2S)$ and $\mathitΥ(3S)$ states is found in $p$O collisions, while in OO collisions the $\mathitΥ(2S)$ is suppressed by a factor of $\sim2$, with evidence for suppression of the $\mathitΥ(3S)$. The significant suppression in OO data, compared to the small effect in $p$O data, shows the emergence of additional suppression mechanisms in the relatively small OO collision system. Models incorporating quark-gluon plasma formation in OO collisions successfully describe the data. Implications for the interplay between cold nuclear matter effects and color screening in a deconfined quark-gluon plasma are discussed.

Test of lepton flavour universality with $B^0\to K^{*0}\ell^+\ell^-$ decays at large dilepton invariant mass

Muon-electron universality is tested in $B^0 \to K^{*0} \ \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays, in the dilepton-invariant-mass region above the $ψ(2S)$ resonance. The analysis uses beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 $\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $\text{fb}^{-1}$. The ratio of branching fractions between the muon and electron channels $R_{K^{*0}}$ is measured to be $1.08\,^{+0.14}_{-0.12}\text{(stat)} \ \pm 0.07\text{(syst)}$ for a dilepton-invariant-mass squared above 14.0 $\text{GeV}^{2}/\text{c}^{4}$, consistent with the standard model prediction. This result represents the most precise measurement of $R_{K^{*0}}$ in this region and the first such measurement performed at a hadron collider.

Evidence for the rare decay $B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}$

A search for the rare decay $B^{+} \to \bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}= 13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^-1$. An excess of events is found with respect to the background-only expectation, with a signal significance of 3.5 standard deviations, in the low invariant-mass region of $m(\bar Λp)<2.8$ GeV/$c^2$. The branching fraction is measured to be ${\cal B}_{\rm low}({B^{+}}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})=\left(1.70 ^{+0.65}_{-0.56}(\rm stat) \pm 0.17(\rm syst) \pm 0.14(\rm ext)\right) \times 10^{-8}$, where the last uncertainty is due to external inputs on ${\cal B}(B^+\to{J/ψ\bar Λp})\times {\cal B}({J/ψ}\to{μ^+μ^-})$. With no significant signal observed in the high $m(\bar Λp)$ region above 2.8 GeV/$c^2$, an upper limit is set to be ${\cal B}_{\rm high}(B^{+}\to {\bar Λp μ^{+} μ^{-}})<2.8\,(3.7) \times 10^{-9}$ at the $90\%$ ($95\%$) confidence level.

First energy scan measurement of $e^{+}e^{-}\to K^{+}K^{-}$ around the $ψ(2S)$ resonance

We report the precise energy scan measurement of the cross section lineshape of $ψ(2S)\to K^{+}K^{-}$. The analysis is based on $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 495~pb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. By analyzing the cross section line-shape, we extract the relative phase $Φ$ between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of the $ψ(2S)$ resonance, a fundamental parameter in charmonium physics, based on the assumption that the relative phase between the electromagnetic amplitude of the $ψ(2S)$ resonance and the continuum is zero. Two distinct solutions for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$ of $ψ(2S)\to K^{+}K^{-}$ are observed: a constructive interference solution with $\mathcal{B}=(7.49\pm0.41)\times10^{-5}$ and $Φ=(110.1 \pm6.7)^\circ$, and a destructive interference solution with $\mathcal{B}=(10.94\pm0.48)\times10^{-5}$ and $Φ=(-106.8\pm5.7)^\circ$. A significant correlation between $Φ$ and $\mathcal{B}$ is established, demonstrating that interference effects must be taken into account in the $ψ(2S)$ branching fraction measurements. Additionally, the first results for both the $ψ(2S)$ strong form factor, which characterizes the strong coupling between $ψ(2S)$ and $K^{+}K^{-}$, and the energy-dependent electromagnetic form factor of the charged kaon in this energy region are reported.

Precision measurements of semleptonic decays $D^0 \to π^-\ell^+ν_\ell$ and $D^+ \to π^0\ell^+ν_\ell$ ($\ell =e,μ$)

The branching fractions of $D^0\to π^-e^+ν_e$, $D^0\to π^-μ^+ν_μ$, $D^+\to π^0e^+ν_e$, and $D^+\to π^0μ^+ν_μ$ are measured to be $(2.950\pm0.017_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.017_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}$, $(2.817\pm0.037_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.019_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}$, $(3.622\pm0.034_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.018_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}$, and $(3.507\pm0.043_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.026_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}$ using $e^+e^-$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. The partial decay rates of these four decays are measured with the best precision to date and their forward-backward asymmetries are determined for the first time. By performing a simultaneous fit to these results, the product of the hadronic transition form factor $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)$ and the modulus of the $c\to d$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|$ is given by $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)|V_{cd}|=0.1425\pm0.0005_{\rm stat.}\pm0.0003_{\rm syst.}$. Taking the $|V_{cd}|$ provided by the standard model global fit and the $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)$ calculated from the lattice quantum chromodynamics as input, we obtain $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)=0.6339\pm0.0024_{\rm stat.}\pm0.0014_{\rm syst.}$ and $|V_{cd}|=0.2262\pm0.0008_{\rm stat.}\pm0.0005_{\rm syst.}\pm0.0018_{\rm LQCD.}$, respectively. The reported results have the best precision to date. We also search for the scalar current contribution in the $c\to d \ell^+ν_{\ell}$ transition and determine Re$(C_S^μ)=$ $0.022 \pm 0.023_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.003_{\rm syst.}$ and $|{\rm Im}(C_S^μ)|=0.000 \pm $ $0.038_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.012_{\rm syst.}$. In addition, the lepton flavor universality is tested with the ratios of the decay rates between semimuonic and semielectronic decays in full and several $\ell^+ν_\ell$ four-momentum transfer ranges.

Precision Measurement of Decay Dynamics in $D^{0(+)}\to π^{-(0)}\ell^+ν_\ell$

The branching fractions of $D^0\to π^-e^+ν_e$, $D^0\to π^-μ^+ν_μ$, $D^+\to π^0e^+ν_e$, and $D^+\to π^0μ^+ν_μ$ are precisely measured, using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector. The ratios of the decay widths between muon and positron channels are examined in full, across several four-momentum transfer ranges of $\ell^+ν_{\ell}$. No lepton flavor universality violation is found in the current data. From a simultaneous fit to the precisely measured partial decay rates and the first measured forward-backward asymmetries of these four decays, the product of the hadronic transition form factor, $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)$, and the modulus of the $c\to d$ quark mixing element, $|V_{cd}|$, is measured with unprecedented precision to be $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)|V_{cd}|=0.1425\pm0.0005_{\rm stat.}\pm0.0003_{\rm syst.}$. Taking the value of $|V_{cd}|$ from the standard model global fit and $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)$ derived by the lattice quantum chromodynamics calculation as input, we obtain $f^{D\toπ}_+(0)=0.1425\pm0.0005_{\rm stat.}\pm0.0003_{\rm syst.}$ and $|V_{cd}|=0.2262\pm0.0008_{\rm stat.}\pm0.0005_{\rm syst.}\pm0.0018_{\rm LQCD.}$, respectively. The precision of each result is a factor of 2-3 better than the previous best measurements. Additionally, the real and imaginary parts of the scalar current contribution in the $c\to d \ell^+ν_{\ell}$ transition are measured for the first time to be Re $(C_S^μ)=$ $0.022 \pm 0.023_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.003_{\rm syst.}$ and $|\mathrm{Im} (C_S^μ)|=0.000 \pm 0.038_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.012_{\rm syst.}$.

Proof of principle for nucleon polarization measurement at BESIII

A novel technique for measuring the spin polarization of final-state nucleons in a general-purpose spectrometer is validated. Using $10.09\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events at BESIII, the asymmetry of polarized proton scattering on detector support material is measured, and is consistent with the expected value. This proves that a general-purpose spectrometer can be utilized as a large-acceptance polarimeter, providing the spin polarization in addition to the conventional four-momentum information of the final-state particles. With this technique, physics capabilities are enhanced for existing and future facilities in particle and nuclear physics.

First Measurement of the Relative Phase between Proton Psionic Form Factors

The relative phase between the time-like form factors of the proton is a crucial observable for a complete understanding of its internal structure, yet it has remained unmeasured due to the formidable experimental challenge of determining the final-state polarization or having available polarized beams. With a novel technique that measures polarization via secondary scattering on spectrometer material, we use $10.09\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected at BESIII to analyze the reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrow J/ψ\rightarrow p\bar{p}$. This allows the first determination of the sine of the relative phase between the proton psionic form factors, $\sinΔΦ=-0.20\pm0.34_{\textrm{stat}}\pm0.11_{\textrm{syst}}$. This result provides the first direct insight into the complex dynamics of proton formation, and offers valuable new information to constrain theoretical models of nucleon structure.

Search for $C\!P$ violation in $D^+ \to ϕπ^+$ decays

A search for charge-parity ($C\!P$) violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed $D^+ \to ϕπ^+$ decay is presented, using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6\text{ fb}^{-1}$, collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $13\text{ TeV}$ with the LHCb detector during Run 2. An abundant sample of $D^+ \to K_{\rm S}^0 π^+$ decays is employed to correct for asymmetries arising from the production of the charmed meson and from detection effects associated with the charged pion accompanying the $ϕ$ meson. Asymmetries induced by interference of multiple processes, such as neutral kaon mixing, regeneration of neutral kaons, and interference between the Cabibbo-favoured $D^+ \to \overline{K}^0 π^+$ and the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed $D^+ \to {K}^0 π^+$ decay, are subtracted. The direct $C\!P$ asymmetry in the $D^+ \to ϕπ^+$ decay is measured to be \begin{equation*} a_{C\!P}(D^+ \to ϕπ^+) = \left(0.1 \pm 4.9\text{ (stat)} \pm 2.4\text{ (syst)} \right)\times 10^{-4}. \end{equation*} For the first time at a hadron collider, the modulus of the ratio and the relative strong phase of the $D^+ \to {K}^0 π^+$ to $D^+ \to \overline{ K}^0 π^+$ decay amplitudes are also investigated. Two-dimensional confidence intervals are reported for these parameters.

Observation of $CP$ violation in $B^{0}\!\to{J\mskip-3mu/\mskip-2muψ}ρ(770)^0$ decays

The time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B^{0}\!\to{J\mskip-3mu/\mskip-2muψ}ρ(770)^0$ decays is measured using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\text{TeV}$ during the years 2015-2018. The $CP$-violation parameters for this process are determined to be $2β^{\rm eff}_{c\bar{c}d} = 0.710 \pm 0.084 \pm 0.051\,\text{rad}$ and $|λ| = 1.019 \pm 0.034 \pm 0.024$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This constitutes the first observation of time-dependent $CP$ violation in $B^{0}\!\to{J\mskip-3mu/\mskip-2muψ}ρ(770)^0$ decays. Assuming approximate SU(3) flavor symmetry, these results are combined with the previous consistent LHCb measurement to set the most stringent constraint on the penguin contribution, $Δϕ_{s}$, to the $CP$-violating phase $ϕ_{s}$ in $B^{0}_{s}\!\to{J\mskip-3mu/\mskip-2muψ}ϕ(1020)$ decays, yielding $Δϕ_{s} = 5.0 \pm 4.6\,\text{mrad}$.

Measurement of the double Dalitz decay $η\to e^+e^-e^+e^-$

Using a data sample of $(1.0087 \pm 0.0044) \times {10^{10}}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we study the rare double Dalitz decay of $η\rightarrow e^+e^-e^+e^-$ through the processes $J/ψ\rightarrow γη$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow γη' ,η' \to π^+π^-η$. Clear $η$ signals are observed in the $e^+e^-e^+e^-$ invariant mass spectrum, with statistical significances of 5.9$σ$ and 7.8$σ$ for the two channels, respectively. By combining both modes, we determine the branching fraction of $η\rightarrow e^+ e^- e^+ e^-$ to be $(2.63~\pm~0.34_{\rm stat}~\pm~0.16_{\rm syst}) \times10^{-5}$. The result is consistent with the previous measurements within uncertainties and further constrains physics beyond the standard model.
