Perturbative breaking of the pseudospin symmetry in the relativistic harmonic oscillator

We show that relativistic mean fields theories with scalar, $S$, and vector, $V$, quadratic radial potentials can generate a harmonic oscillator with exact pseudospin symmetry {\it and positive energy bound states} when $S=-V$. The eigenenergies are quite different from those of the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator. We also discuss a mechanism for perturbatively breaking this symmetry by introducing a tensor potential. Our results shed light into the intrinsic relativistic nature of the pseudospin symmetry, which might be important in high density systems such as neutron stars.

Pseudospin symmetry and the relativistic harmonic oscillator

A generalized relativistic harmonic oscillator for spin 1/2 particles is studied. The Dirac Hamiltonian contains a scalar $S$ and a vector $V$ quadratic potentials in the radial coordinate, as well as a tensor potential $U$ linear in $r$. Setting either or both combinations $Σ=S+V$ and $% Δ=V-S$ to zero, analytical solutions for bound states of the corresponding Dirac equations are found. The eigenenergies and wave functions are presented and particular cases are discussed, devoting a special attention to the nonrelativistic limit and the case $Σ=0$, for which pseudospin symmetry is exact. We also show that the case $U=Δ=0$ is the most natural generalization of the nonrelativistic harmonic oscillator. The radial node structure of the Dirac spinor is studied for several combinations of harmonic-oscillator potentials, and that study allows us to explain why nuclear intruder levels cannot be described in the framework of the relativistic harmonic oscillator in the pseudospin limit.

The nuclear pseudospin symmetry along an isotopic chain

We investigate the isospin dependence of pseudospin symmetry in the chain of tin isotopes (from $^{120}$Sn until $^{170}$Sn). Using a Woods-Saxon parametrization of the nuclear potential for these isotopes we study in detail the effect of the vector-isovector $ρ$ and Coulomb potentials in the energy splittings of neutron and proton pseudospin partners in the isotopic chain. We conclude that the realization of nuclear pseudospin symmetry does not change considerably with the mass number, and is always favored for neutrons. We also find that the $ρ$ potential accounts for essentially all the pseudospin isospin asymmetry observed and that the Coulomb potential plays a negligible role in this asymmetry. This can be explained by the dynamical nature of pseudospin symmetry in nuclei, namely the dependence of the pseudospin splittings on the shape of the nuclear mean-field potential.

Role of the Coulomb and the vector-isovector $ρ$ potentials in the isospin asymmetry of nuclear pseudospin

We investigate the role of the Coulomb and the vector-isovector $ρ$ potentials in the asymmetry of the neutron and proton pseudospin splittings in nuclei. To this end, we solve the Dirac equation for the nucleons using central vector and scalar potentials with Woods-Saxon shape and $Z$ and $N-Z$ dependent Coulomb and $ρ$ potentials added to the vector potential. We study the effect of these potentials on the energy splittings of proton and neutron pseudospin partners along a Sn isotopic chain. We use an energy decomposition proposed in a previous work to assess the effect of a pseudospin-orbit potential on those splittings. We conclude that the effect of the Coulomb potential is quite small and the $ρ$ potential gives the main contribution to the observed isospin asymmetry of the pseudospin splittings. This isospin asymmetry results from a cancellation of the various energy terms and cannot be attributed only to the pseudospin-orbit term, confirming the dynamical character of this symmetry pointed out in previous works.

Dynamical nature of the nuclear pseudospin and its isospin asymmetry

Pseudospin symmetry in nuclei is investigated by solving the Dirac equation with Woods-Saxon scalar and vector radial potentials. We relate the pseudospin interaction with a pseudospin-orbit term in a Schroedinger-like equation for the lower component of the Dirac spinor. We show that this term gives a large contribution to the energy splittings of pseudospin partners, so that the near pseudospin degeneracy arises from a significant cancellation among the different terms in that equation. This is a manifestation of the dynamical character of this symmetry in the nucleus. We analyze the isospin dependence of the pseudospin symmetry in a nuclear isotope chain by including a vector-isovector potential V_rho and a Coulomb potential and conclude that V_rho gives the main contribution to the observed pseudospin isospin asymmetry.

Radial excited states of the nucleon in quark models with dynamical confinement

The Roper state is described in the framework of the chiral chromodielectric model as a single quark excitation in self-consistent meson potentials. The interplay between quark and meson excitations is discussed and we emphasise the role of non-quark degrees of freedom in the electroproduction of nucleon excitations.

Roper Electroproduction Amplitudes in a Chiral Confinement Model

A description of the Roper using the chiral chromodielectric model is presented and the transverse $A_{1/2}$ and the scalar $S_{1/2}$ helicity amplitudes for the electromagnetic Nucleon--Roper transition are obtained for small and moderate $Q^2$. The sign of the amplitudes is correct but the model predictions underestimate the data at the photon point. Our results do not indicate a change of sign in any amplitudes up to $Q^2\sim1$ GeV$^2$. The contribution of the scalar meson excitations to the Roper electroproduction is taken into account but it turns out to be small in comparison with the quark contribution. However, it is argued that mesonic excitations may play a more prominent role in higher excited states.

Excitation of non-quark degrees of freedom in N*

We study the contribution of glueball and sigma-meson degrees of freedom to nucleon excited states in the framework of a chiral version of the chromodielectric model. We have found that these degrees of freedom considerably lower the energy of the Roper and may substantially weaken the electroexcitation amplitudes for the N(1440) and in particular for the N(1710).

N^* electroproduction amplitudes in a model with dynamical confinement

The Roper resonance is described in a chiral version of the chromodielectric model as a cluster of three quarks in radial-orbital configuration (1s)$^2$(2s)$^1$, surrounded by $π$ and $σ$-meson clouds and by a chromodielectric field which assures quark dynamical confinement. Radial profiles for all fields are determined self-consistently for each baryon. Transverse $A_{1/2}$ and scalar $S_{1/2}$ helicity amplitudes for the nucleon-Roper transition are calculated. The contribution of glueball and $σ$-meson vibrations is estimated; although small for N(1440), the $σ$ contribution can be large for N(1710).

Pseudospin symmetry as a relativistic dynamical symmetry in the nucleus

Pseudospin symmetry in nuclei is investigated by solving the Dirac equation with Woods-Saxon scalar and vector radial potentials, and studying the correlation of the energy splittings of pseudospin partners with the nuclear potential parameters. The pseudospin interaction is related to a pseudospin-orbit term that arises in a Schroedinger-like equation for the lower component of the Dirac spinor. We show that the contribution from this term to the energy splittings of pseudospin partners is large. The near pseudospin degeneracy results from a significant cancelation among the different terms in that equation, manifesting the dynamical character of this symmetry in the nucleus. We analyze the isospin dependence of the pseudospin symmetry and find that its dynamical character is behind the different pseudospin splittings observed in neutron and proton spectra of nuclei.

The Isospin Asymmetry in the Pseudo-spin Dynamical Symmetry

Pseudo-spin symmetry in nuclei is investigated considering the Dirac equation with a Lorentz structured Woods-Saxon potential. The isospin correlation of the energy splittings of pseudo-spin partners with the nuclear potential parameters is studied. We show that in an isotopic chain, the pseudo-spin symmetry is better realized for neutrons than for protons. This behavior comes from balance effects amongst the central nuclear potential parameters. In general, we found an isospin asymmetry of the nuclear pseudo-spin interaction, opposed to the nuclear spin-orbit interaction which is quasi isospin symmetric.

On the relativistic L-S coupling

The fact that the Dirac equation is linear in the space and time derivatives leads to the coupling of spin and orbital angular momenta that is of a pure relativistic nature. We illustrate this fact by computing the solutions of the Dirac equation in an infinite spherical well, which allows to go from the relativistic to the non-relativistic limit by just varying the radius of the well.
