Nanoscale Sensing of Solid-State Samples with High Frequency Resolution

To meet the growing demand for nanoscale surface analysis, nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers offer a high-sensitivity alternative by leveraging their ability to operate in immediate proximity to the sample. In this work, we propose a quantum control protocol designed to overcome the inherent challenges of solid-state environments, specifically by mitigating anisotropy and strong dipole-dipole interactions to enable the detection of isotropic chemical shifts at the nanoscale. To achieve this, our scheme synchronizes a slowly rotating magnetic field with tailored RF decoupling and MW control of the NV sensors. We provide an analytical mapping that explicitly links the measured spectrum to the control sequence features and the underlying system parameters, enabling a straightforward characterization of the sample.

Enhanced microscale NMR spectroscopy of low-gyromagnetic ratio nuclei via hydrogen transfer

Chemical shifts and J-couplings are fundamental parameters in NMR spectroscopy as they provide structural information about molecules. Extracting these quantities from isotopes such as carbon or nitrogen results in reduced sensitivity due to their low gyromagnetic ratios. In this work, we present a method for detecting chemical shifts and J-couplings at the microscale in low-gyromagnetic-ratio nuclei using NV centers. By leveraging hydrogen nuclei, we achieve strong coupling with NVs and fast signal emission that aligns with NV coherence times. In addition, the technique is well-suited for implementations under high magnetic fields. We demonstrate that our protocol achieves a sensitivity enhancement of more than one order of magnitude for scenarios involving $^{13}$C, with even greater improvements for nuclei with lower gyromagnetic ratios.

J-coupling NMR Spectroscopy with Nitrogen Vacancy Centers at High Fields

A diamond-based sensor utilizing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center ensembles permits the analysis of micron-sized samples through NMR techniques at room temperature. Current efforts are directed towards extending the operating range of NV centers into high magnetic fields, driven by the potential for larger nuclear spin polarization of the target sample and the presence of enhanced chemical shifts. Especially interesting is the access to J-couplings as they carry information of chemical connectivity inside molecules. In this work, we present a protocol to access J-couplings in both homonuclear and heteronuclear cases with NV centers at high magnetic fields. Our protocol leads to a clear spectrum exclusively containing J-coupling features with high resolution. This resolution is limited primarily by the decoherence of the target sample, which is mitigated by the noise filtering capacities of our method.

Amplified Nanoscale Detection of Labelled Molecules via Surface Electrons on Diamond

The detection of individual molecules and their dynamics has been a long-standing challenge in the field of nanotechnology. In this work, we present a method that utilizes a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center and a dangling-bond on the diamond surface to measure the coupling between two electronic targets tagged on a macromolecule. To achieve this, we design a multi-tone dynamical decoupling sequence that leverages the strong interaction between the nitrogen vacancy center and the dangling bond. In addition, this sequence minimizes the impact of decoherence finally resulting in an increased signal-to-noise ratio. This proposal has the potential to open up new avenues for fundamental research and technological innovation in distinct areas such as biophysics and biochemistry.
