Tensorial characterization and quantum estimation of weakly entangled qubits

In the case of two qubits, standard entanglement monotones like the linear entropy fail to provide an efficient quantum estimation in the regime of weak entanglement. In this paper, a more efficient entanglement estimation, by means of a novel class of entanglement monotones, is proposed. Following an approach based on the geometric formulation of quantum mechanics, these entanglement monotones are defined by inner products on invariant tensor fields on bipartite qubit orbits of the group SU(2)xSU(2).

From Geometric Quantum Mechanics to Quantum Information

We consider the geometrization of quantum mechanics. We then focus on the pull-back of the Fubini-Study metric tensor field from the projective Hibert space to the orbits of the local unitary groups. An inner product on these tensor fields allows us to obtain functions which are invariant under the considered local unitary groups. This procedure paves the way to an algorithmic approach to the identification of entanglement monotone candidates. Finally, a link between the Fubini-Study metric and a quantum version of the Fisher information metric is discussed.

Classical Tensors and Quantum Entanglement II: Mixed States

Invariant operator-valued tensor fields on Lie groups are considered. These define classical tensor fields on Lie groups by evaluating them on a quantum state. This particular construction, applied on the local unitary group U(n)xU(n), may establish a method for the identification of entanglement monotone candidates by deriving invariant functions from tensors being by construction invariant under local unitary transformations. In particular, for n=2, we recover the purity and a concurrence related function (Wootters 1998) as a sum of inner products of symmetric and anti-symmetric parts of the considered tensor fields. Moreover, we identify a distinguished entanglement monotone candidate by using a non-linear realization of the Lie algebra of SU(2)xSU(2). The functional dependence between the latter quantity and the concurrence is illustrated for a subclass of mixed states parametrized by two variables.

A class of commutative dynamics of open quantum systems

We analyze a class of dynamics of open quantum systems which is governed by the dynamical map mutually commuting at different times. Such evolution may be effectively described via spectral analysis of the corresponding time dependent generators. We consider both Markovian and non-Markovian cases.

Brownian motion on Lie groups and open quantum systems

We study the twirling semigroups of (super)operators, namely, certain quantum dynamical semigroups that are associated, in a natural way, with the pairs formed by a projective representation of a locally compact group and a convolution semigroup of probability measures on this group. The link connecting this class of semigroups of operators with (classical) Brownian motion is clarified. It turns out that every twirling semigroup associated with a finite-dimensional representation is a random unitary semigroup, and, conversely, every random unitary semigroup arises as a twirling semigroup. Using standard tools of the theory of convolution semigroups of measures and of convex analysis, we provide a complete characterization of the infinitesimal generator of a twirling semigroup associated with a finite-dimensional unitary representation of a Lie group.

Classical Tensors and Quantum Entanglement I: Pure States

The geometrical description of a Hilbert space asociated with a quantum system considers a Hermitian tensor to describe the scalar inner product of vectors which are now described by vector fields. The real part of this tensor represents a flat Riemannian metric tensor while the imaginary part represents a symplectic two-form. The immersion of classical manifolds in the complex projective space associated with the Hilbert space allows to pull-back tensor fields related to previous ones, via the immersion map. This makes available, on these selected manifolds of states, methods of usual Riemannian and symplectic geometry. Here we consider these pulled-back tensor fields when the immersed submanifold contains separable states or entangled states. Geometrical tensors are shown to encode some properties of these states. These results are not unrelated with criteria already available in the literature. We explicitly deal with some of these relations.

Remarks on the star product of functions on finite and compact groups

Using the formalism of quantizers and dequantizers, we show that the characters of irreducible unitary representations of finite and compact groups provide kernels for star products of complex-valued functions of the group elements. Examples of permutation groups of two and three elements, as well as the SU(2) group, are considered. The k-deformed star products of functions on finite and compact groups are presented. The explicit form of the quantizers and dequantizers, and the duality symmetry of the considered star products are discussed.

Classical tensors from quantum states

The embedding of a manifold M into a Hilbert-space H induces, via the pull-back, a tensor field on M out of the Hermitian tensor on H. We propose a general procedure to compute these tensors in particular for manifolds admitting a Lie-group structure.

Frame transforms, star products and quantum mechanics on phase space

Using the notions of frame transform and of square integrable projective representation of a locally compact group $G$, we introduce a class of isometries (tight frame transforms) from the space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators in the carrier Hilbert space of the representation into the space of square integrable functions on the direct product group $G\times G$. These transforms have remarkable properties. In particular, their ranges are reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces endowed with a suitable 'star product' which mimics, at the level of functions, the original product of operators. A 'phase space formulation' of quantum mechanics relying on the frame transforms introduced in the present paper, and the link of these maps with both the Wigner transform and the wavelet transform are discussed.

An Algebraic Approach to Linear-Optical Schemes for Deterministic Quantum Computing

Linear-Optical Passive (LOP) devices and photon counters are sufficient to implement universal quantum computation with single photons, and particular schemes have already been proposed. In this paper we discuss the link between the algebraic structure of LOP transformations and quantum computing. We first show how to decompose the Fock space of N optical modes in finite-dimensional subspaces that are suitable for encoding strings of qubits and invariant under LOP transformations (these subspaces are related to the spaces of irreducible unitary representations of U(N)). Next we show how to design in algorithmic fashion LOP circuits which implement any quantum circuit deterministically. We also present some simple examples, such as the circuits implementing a CNOT gate and a Bell-State Generator/Analyzer.

Exploring a New Post-Selection Condition for Efficient Linear Optics Quantum Computation

Recently, it was shown that fundamental gates for theoretically efficient quantum information processing can be realized by using single photon sources, linear optics and quantum counters. One of these fundamental gates is the NS-gate, that is, the one-mode non-linear sign shift. In this work, firstly, we prove by a new rigorous proof that the upper bound of success probability of NS-gates with only one helper photon and an undefined number of ancillary modes is bounded by 0.25. Secondly, we explore the upper bound of success probability of NS-gate with a new post-selection measurement. The idea behind this new post-selection measurement is to condition the success of NS-gate transformation to the observation of only one helper photon in whichever of the output modes.

Coarse grained and fine dynamics in trapped ion Raman schemes

A novel result concerning Raman coupling schemes in the context of trapped ions is obtained. By means of an operator perturbative approach, it is shown that the complete time evolution of these systems (in the interaction picture) can be expressed, with a high degree of accuracy, as the product of two unitary evolutions. The first one describes the time evolution related to an effective coarse grained dynamics. The second is a suitable correction restoring the {\em fine} dynamics suppressed by the coarse graining performed to adiabatically eliminate the nonresonantly coupled atomic level.

Evolution of the N ion Jaynes-Cummings model beyond the standard rotating wave approximation

A unitary transformation of the N-ion Jaynes-Cummings hamiltonian is proposed. It is shown that any approximate expression of the evolution operator associated with the transformed hamiltonian retains its validity independently from the intensity of the external driving field. In particular, using the rotating wave approximation, one obtains a solution for the N-ion Jaynes-Cummings model which improves the standard rotating wave approximation solution.

Resonances and spectral properties of detuned OPO pumped by fluctuating sources

Twin beam fluctuations are analyzed for detuned and mismatched OPO configurations. Resonances and frequency responses to the quantum noise sources (quantum and pump amplitude/phase fluctuations) are examined as functions of cavity decay rates, excitation parameter and detuning. The dependence of self- and mutual correlations of beam amplitudes and phases on detuning, mismatch and damping parameters is discussed.
