The size of most massive neutron stars may reveal its exotic cores

The recent high precision observation of the most massive pulsar J1614-2230 with $(1.97\pm0.04)$ solar mass ($M_\odot$) was reported with a suggestion that many nuclear models which consider exotic particles in the core could be ruled out. However, many recent calculations could explain this star with various exotic particles, rendering the precise mass measurements insufficient to conclude on exotic cores. We examine the sensitivity of the radius of such a star to the details of its core. With our calculations and analysis, here we show that, for the most massive neutron star, with a precise observation of its radius it is possible to ascertain the presence of exotic cores.

Pasta phases in neutron star studied with extended relativistic mean field models

To explain several properties of finite nuclei, infinite matter, and neutron stars in a unified way within the relativistic mean field models, it is important to extend them either with higher order couplings or with density-dependent couplings. These extensions are known to have strong impact in the high-density regime. Here we explore their role on the equation of state at densities lower than the saturation density of finite nuclei which govern the phase transitions associated with pasta structures in the crust of neutron stars.

Antikaons and higher order couplings in relativistic-mean field study of neutron stars

We investigate the role of higher order couplings, along with the condensation of antikaons ($K^-$ and $\bar K^0$), on the properties of neutron star (NS). We employ extended versions of the relativistic mean-field model, in which kaon-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon interactions are taken on the same footing. We find that the onset of condensation of $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ highly depends not only on the strength of optical potential but also on the new couplings. The presence of antikaons leads to a softer equation of state and makes the neutron star core symmetric and lepton-deficient. We show that these effects strongly influence the mass-radius relation as well as the composition of neutron star. We also show that the recently observed 1.97$\pm$.04 solar mass NS can be explained in three ways: (i) a stiffer EoS with both antikaons, (ii) a relatively soft EoS with $K^-$ and (iii) a softer EoS without antikaons.

Role of higher order couplings in the presence of kaons in relativistic mean field description of neutron stars

We discuss the role of higher order couplings in conjunction with kaon condensation using recent versions of relativistic mean field models. We focus on an interaction (G2) in which all the parameters are obtained by fitting the finite nuclear data and successfully applied to reproduce a variety of nuclear properties. Our results show that the higher order couplings play a significant role at higher densities where kaons dominate the behavior of the equation of state. We compare our results with other interactions (NLl, NL3, G1, and FSUGold) and show that the new couplings bring down the mass of a neutron star (NS), which is further reduced in the presence of kaons to yield results consistent with the present observational constraints. We show that the composition of the NS varies with the parameter sets.

Internal stucture of clusters in $^{112-122}$Ba nuclei within relativistic mean field theory

We study the clustering structure and the internal or sub-structure of clusters in $^{112-122}$Ba nuclei within the framework of relativistic mean field theory in an axially deformed cylindrical co-ordinate. We calculate the total density distribution, and the individual neutrons and protons density distributions. From the analysis of the clustering confugurations of the density distributions of various shapes, we find different sub-structures inside the Ba nuclei considered here. The important step, carried out for the first time, is the counting of number of protons and neutrons present in the clustering region(s). $^{12}$C is shown to consitute the cluster configuration of Ba nuclei in most cases, with $^{2,3}$H and $^4$He constituting the neck between two fissioning symmetrical fragments.

Nuclear reaction studies of unstable nuclei using relativistic mean field formalisms in conjunction with Glauber model

We study nuclear reaction cross-sections for stable and unstable projectiles and targets within Glauber model, using densities obtained from various relativistic mean field formalisms. The calculated cross-sections are compared with the experimental data in some specific cases. We also evaluate the differential scattering cross-sections at several incident energies, and observe that the results found from various densities are similar at smaller scattering angles, whereas a systematic deviation is noticed at large angles. In general, these results agree fairly well with the experimental data.

Consistency of nuclear mass formulae

The general scepticism and loss of faith on the predictive ability of different mass formulae, arising out of the divergence of their predictions in unknown regions taken with respect to a reference mass formula, is successfully dispelled. When the result of relativistic mean field (RMF) theory with a Lagrangian common for all nuclei is taken as reference, the divergence disappears, and clear trend with strong correlation appears restoring our faith in general on the predictions of mass formulae, qualifying them as useful guideline for theoretical and experimental studies of nuclear phenomena.

Applicability of shape parameterizations for giant dipole resonance in warm and rapidly rotating nuclei

We investigate how well the shape parameterizations are applicable for studying the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in nuclei, in the low temperature and/or high spin regime. The shape fluctuations due to thermal effects in the GDR observables are calculated using the actual free energies evaluated at fixed spin and temperature. The results obtained are compared with Landau theory calculations done by parameterizing the free energy. We exemplify that the Landau theory could be inadequate where shell effects are dominating. This discrepancy at low temperatures and high spins are well reflected in GDR observables and hence insists on exact calculations in such cases.

Versatility of field theory motivated nuclear effective Lagrangian approach

We analyze the results for infinite nuclear and neutron matter using the standard relativistic mean field model and its recent effective field theory motivated generalization. For the first time, we show quantitatively that the inclusion in the effective theory of vector meson self-interactions and scalar-vector cross-interactions explains naturally the recent experimental observations of the softness of the nuclear equation of state, without losing the advantages of the standard relativistic model for finite nuclei.

Giant dipole resonance with exact treatment of thermal fluctuations

The shape fluctuations due to thermal effects in the giant dipole resonance (GDR) observables are calculated using the exact free energies evaluated at fixed spin and temperature. The results obtained are compared with Landau theory calculations done by parameterizing the free energy. The Landau theory is found to be insufficient when the shell effects are dominating.

Role of BCS-type pairing in light deformed nuclei: A relativistic mean field approach

We calculate the binding energy and deformation parameter for light nuclei with and without pairing using a deformed relativistic mean field model. The role of BCS-type pairing effect is analyzed for Ne and F isotopes. The calculated odd-even staggering and the deformation parameters argue strongly against the role of pairing in the light nuclei.

On the stability and the similarity of N=82 isotones

Here we study the stability and the similarity of all even $58\leq Z\leq 70, N=82 isotones. We confirm the two decades old study of one of the authors (AA) regarding the extra-ordinary stability and the similarity of these nuclei. We present here a new evidence which shows very strongly the said magicity of those nuclei and as such there exists a new ``plateau'' of magicity. Three well studied theoretical models which have been successfully applied in nuclear physics are used here to study the above phenomena. None of these model is able to reproduce the similarity and the doubly magic character of these nuclei. Therefore this hints at ``new physics'' in these N=82 isotones.

Effective field theory: A complete relativistic nuclear model

We analyzed the results for finite nuclei and infinite nuclear and neutron matter using the standard $σ-ω$ model and with the effective field theory. For the first time, we have shown here quantitatively that the inclusion of self-interaction of the vector mesons and the cross-interaction of all the mesons taken in the theory explain naturally the experimentally observed softness of equation of state without loosing the advantages of standard $σ-ω$ model for finite nuclei. Recent experimental observations support our findings and allow us to conclude that without self- and cross-interactions the relativistic mean field theory is incomplete.
