Photon-jet correlations in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

The reaction e + p ---> photon + jet + X is studied in QCD at the next-to-leading order. Previous studies on inclusive distributions showed a good agreement with ZEUS data. To obtain a finer understanding of the dynamics of the reaction, several correlation functions are evaluated for ZEUS kinematics.

Photon-Jet cross sections in Deep-Inelastic Scattering

We present the complete next-to-leading order calculation of isolated prompt photon production in association with a jet in deep-inelastic scattering. The calculation involves, direct, resolved and fragmentation contributions. It is shown that defining the transverse momenta in the proton virtual-photon frame (CM*), as usually done, or in the laboratory frame (LAB), as done in some experiments, is not equivalent and leads to important differences concerning the perturbative approach. In fact, using the latter frame may preclude, under certain conditions, the calculation of the next-to-leading order correction to the important resolved component. A comparaison with the latest ZEUS data is performed and good agreement is found in the perturbatively stable regions.

Parton energy loss in glasma

We study the synchrotron-like gluon emission in $AA$-collisions from fast partons due to interaction with the coherent glasma color fields. Our results show that for RHIC and LHC conditions the contribution of this mechanism to parton energy loss is much smaller than the radiative energy loss in the plasma phase.

Jet color chemistry and anomalous baryon production in $AA$-collisions

We study anomalous high-$p_T$ baryon production in $AA$-collisions due to formation of the two parton collinear $gq$ system in the anti-sextet color state for quark jets and $gg$ system in the decuplet/anti-decuplet color states for gluon jets. Fragmentation of these states, which are absent for $NN$-collisions, after escaping from the quark-gluon plasma leads to baryon production. Our qualitative estimates show that this mechanism can be potentially important at RHIC and LHC energies.

NLO Calculation of Prompt Photon Production in DIS at HERA

We present a NLO calculation of prompt photon production in DIS. The calculation involves direct, fragmentation and resolved contributions. It is performed in the virtual-photon proton center-of-mass system. A comparison of the theoretical results with HERA data is carried out.

Anomalous mass dependence of radiative quark energy loss in a finite-size quark-gluon plasma

We demonstrate that for a finite-size quark-gluon plasma the induced gluon radiation from heavy quarks is stronger than that for light quarks when the gluon formation length becomes comparable with (or exceeds) the size of the plasma. The effect is due to oscillations of the light-cone wave function for the in-medium $q\to gq$ transition. The dead cone model by Dokshitzer and Kharzeev neglecting quantum finite-size effects is not valid in this regime. The finite-size effects also enhance the photon emission from heavy quarks.

Jet-jet and hadron-jet correlations in hadro- and electro-production

We discuss, in the framework of perturbative QCD at next to leading order, two related observables which are usually considered to provide tests of the BFKL dynamics : jet-jet correlations at Tevatron energies and forward particle-jet correlations at HERA. In the first case we study the rapidity gap dependence of the azimuthal correlations and find slightly too strong correlations at large gap. In the second case we discuss the cross section as well as the azimuthal correlations over a rapidity gap range of 5 units. We find that the requirement of a forward particle imposes strong kinematical constraints which distort the distributions, notably at small rapidity gaps. We also show that the decorrelation is stronger in electroproduction than in hadron-hadron collisions. Unfortunately no data are yet available for comparison.

Failure of the collinear expansion in calculation of the induced gluon emission

We demonstrate that the collinear expansion fails in the case of gluon emission from a fast quark produced in $eA$ DIS. In this approximation the N=1 rescattering contribution to the gluon spectrum vanishes. We show that the higher-twist approach by Guo, Wang and Zhang [4,5] based on the collinear expansion is wrong. The nonzero gluon spectrum obtained in [4,5] is a consequence of unjustified neglecting some important terms in the collinear expansion.

Energetic di-leptons from the Quark Gluon Plasma

In this paper we study the production of energetic di-leptons. We calculate the rate for 2 $\to$ 2 processes. The log term is obtained analytically and the constant term is calculated numerically. When the photon mass is of the order of the thermal quark mass, the result is insensitive to the photon mass and the soft logarithmic divergence is regulated by the thermal quark mass, exactly as in the case of real photons. We also consider the production of thermal Drell-Yan dileptons (thermal quark and antiquark pairs produced by virtual photons) and calculate the rate systematically in the context of the hard thermal loop effective theory. We obtain analytic and numerical results. We compare our results with those of previous calculations.

Collinear Photon Emission from the Quark-Gluon Plasma: The Light-Cone Path Integral Formulation

We give a simple physical derivation of the photon emission rate from the weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma connected with the collinear processes $q\to γq$ and $q\bar{q}\to γ$. The analysis is based on the light-cone path integral approach to the induced radiation. Our results agree with that by Arnold, Moore and Yaffe obtained using the real-time thermal perturbation theory. It is demonstrated that the solution of the AMY integral equation is nothing but the time-integrated Green's function of the light-cone path integral approach written in the momentum representation.

New NLO Parametrizations of the Parton Distributions in Real Photons

We present new NLO sets of parton distributions in real photons based on a scheme invariant definition of the non-perturbative input. We compare the theoretical predictions with LEP data and a best fit allows us to constrain the parameters of the distributions. The shape of the gluon distribution is poorly constrained and we consider the possibility to measure it in photoproduction experiments. Three parametrizations which aim to take into account the scattering of LEP data are proposed. They are compared to other NLO parametrizations.

Deep inelastic scattering and forward neutral pion production at NLO

We present a detailed phenomenological study of forward hadron neutral pion production in deep inelastic scattering, with both the direct and the resolved contributions calculated to NLO accuracy. A comparison of the theoretical predictions for the various distributions with the H1 data and a study of stability of the QCD predictions under changes of scales is the focus of this study. We obtain a very good overall description of the recent H1 data with the choice of scale Q^2 + E^2_{perp}, in contrast to the (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 required earlier when the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. We find a more modest variation of the predictions, as the scale is changed from (Q^2 + E^2_{perp})/2 to 2(Q^2 + E^2_{perp}), as compared to the case where the resolved contribution was included only at LO accuracy. This variation is of the order of the rather large experimental errors. Unfortunately, this fact prevents us from concluding that perturbation theory gives an unambiguous prediction for forward particle production in deep inelastic scattering. However, the overall success of perturbative QCD in explaining the small x_{Bj} data means that perhaps a full resummation of the BFKL ladder is not called for. We notice the need for rather large resolved contributions to explain the data at low x_{Bj} even at somewhat larger Q^2 values.

Photon Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC

Various pion and photon production mechanisms in high-energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC are discussed. Comparison with RHIC data is done whenever possible. The prospect of using electromagnetic probes to characterize quark-gluon plasma formation is assessed.

An NLO calculation of the electroproduction of large-E_\bot hadrons

We present a Next-to-Leading Order calculation of the cross section for the leptoproduction of large-$E_{\bot}$ hadrons and we compare our predictions with H1 data on the forward production of $π^0$. We find large higher order corrections and an important sensitivity to the renormalization and factorization scales. These large corrections are shown to arise in part from BFKL-like diagrams at the lowest order.

Dileptons from hot heavy static photons

We compute the production rate of lepton pair by static photons at finite temperature at two-loop order. We treat the infrared region of the gluon phase space carefully by using a hard thermal loop gluon propagator. The result is free of infrared and collinear divergences and exhibits an enhancement which produces a result of order $\sim e^2 g^3$ instead of $\sim e^2 g^4$ as would be expected from ordinary perturbation theory.

Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal resummation for dilepton production

We consider the thermal emission rate of dileptons from a QCD plasma in the small invariant mass ($Q^2 \sim \gs^2 T^2$) but large energy ($q^0 \gsim T$) range. We derive an integral equation which resums multiple scatterings to include the LPM effect; it is valid at leading order in the coupling. Then we recast it as a differential equation and show a simple algorithm for its solution. We present results for dilepton rates at phenomenologically interesting energies and invariant masses.

A simple sum rule for the thermal gluon spectral function and applications

In this paper, we derive a simple sum rule satisfied by the gluon spectral function at finite temperature. This sum rule is useful in order to calculate exactly some integrals that appear frequently in the photon or dilepton production rate by a quark gluon plasma. Using this sum rule, we rederive simply some known results and obtain some new results that would be extremely difficult to justify otherwise. In particular, we derive an exact expression for the collision integral that appears in the calculation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect.
