Calorimetry of Bose-Einstein condensates

We outline a practical scheme for measuring the thermodynamic properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate as a function of internal energy. We propose using Bragg scattering and controlled trap manipulations to impart a precise amount of energy to a near zero temperature condensate. After thermalisation the temperature can be measured using standard techniques to determine the state equation $T(U,N,ω)$. Our analysis accounts for interaction effects and the excitation of constants of motion which restrict the energy available for thermalisation.

Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice

In this paper we develop an analytic expression for the critical temperature for a gas of ideal bosons in a combined harmonic lattice potential, relevant to current experiments using optical lattices. We give corrections to the critical temperature arising from effective mass modifications of the low energy spectrum, finite size effects and excited band states. We compute the critical temperature using numerical methods and compare to our analytic result. We study condensation in an optical lattice over a wide parameter regime and demonstrate that the critical temperature can be increased or reduced relative to the purely harmonic case by adjusting the harmonic trap frequency. We show that a simple numerical procedure based on a piecewise analytic density of states provides an accurate prediction for the critical temperature.

Quantum depletion of collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates

We perform the first numerical three-dimensional studies of quantum field effects in the Bosenova experiment on collapsing condensates by E. Donley et al. [Nature 415, 39 (2002)] using the exact experimental geometry. In a stochastic truncated Wigner simulation of the collapse, the collapse times are larger than the experimentally measured values. We find that a finite temperature initial state leads to an increased creation rate of uncondensed atoms, but not to a reduction of the collapse time. A comparison of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and Wigner methods for the more tractable spherical trap shows excellent agreement between the uncondensed populations. We conclude that the discrepancy between the experimental and theoretical values of the collapse time cannot be explained by Gaussian quantum fluctuations or finite temperature effects.

Degenerate Fermi gas in a combined harmonic-lattice potential

In this paper we derive an analytic approximation to the density of states for atoms in a combined optical lattice and harmonic trap potential as used in current experiments with quantum degenerate gases. We compare this analytic density of states to numerical solutions and demonstrate its validity regime. Our work explicitly considers the role of higher bands and when they are important in quantitative analysis of this system. Applying our density of states to a degenerate Fermi gas we consider how adiabatic loading from a harmonic trap into the combined harmonic-lattice potential affects the degeneracy temperature. Our results suggest that occupation of excited bands during loading should lead to more favourable conditions for realizing degenerate Fermi gases in optical lattices.

Mean-field phase diagram of cold lattice bosons in disordered potentials

We show that a site-dependent mean-field approach captures the quantum phases of the disordered Bose-Hubbard model commonly adopted to describe ultracold bosons in random optical lattice potentials. The different phases, namely superfluid, Mott insulator, Bose-glass and -- at finite temperature -- normal fluid, are characterized by means of the superfluid and condensate fractions, and compressibility of the system. We point out that both the boundaries of the Mott lobes and the nature of the phase surrounding them are related to the spectral features of a purely off-diagonal non-interacting Anderson model. We compare our results to other works.

Thermodynamics of quantum degenerate gases in optical lattices

The entropy-temperature curves are calculated for non-interacting Bose and Fermi gases in a 3D optical lattice. These curves facilitate understanding of how adiabatic changes in the lattice depth affect the temperature, and we demonstrate regimes where the atomic sample can be significantly heated or cooled by the loading process. We assess the effects of interactions on a Bose gas in a deep optical lattice, and show that interactions ultimately limit the extent of cooling that can occur during lattice loading.

Phase Transitions in Ultra-Cold Two-Dimensional Bose Gases

We briefly review the theory of Bose-Einstein condensation in the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas and, in particular the relationship to the theory of the homogeneous two-dimensional gas and the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase. We obtain a phase diagram for the trapped two-dimensional gas, finding a critical temperature above which the free energy of a state with a pair of vortices of opposite circulation is lower than that for a vortex-free Bose-Einstein condensed ground state. We identify three distinct phases which are, in order of increasing temperature, a phase coherent Bose-Einstein condensate, a vortex pair plasma with fluctuating condensate phase and a thermal Bose gas. The thermal activation of vortex-antivortex pair formation is confirmed using finite-temperature classical field simulations.

Thermal activation of vortex-antivortex pairs in quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates

Here we show, by performing ab initio classical field simulations that two distinct superfluid phases, separated by thermal vortex-antivortex pair creation, exist in experimentally producible quasi-2D Bose gas. These results resolve the debate on the nature of the low temperature phase(s) of a trapped interacting 2D Bose gas.

A Finite Temperature Treatment of Ultracold Atoms in a 1-D Optical Lattice

We consider the effects of temperature upon the superfluid phase of ultracold, weakly interacting bosons in a one dimensional optical lattice. We use a finite temperature treatment of the Bose-Hubbard model based upon the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism, considering both a translationally invariant lattice and one with additional harmonic confinement. In both cases we observe an upward shift in the critical temperature for Bose condensation. For the case with additional harmonic confinement, this is in contrast with results for the uniform gas.

Adiabatic cooling of Fermions in an optical lattice

The entropy-temperature curves are calculated for non-interacting fermions in a 3D optical lattice. These curves facilitate understanding of how adiabatic changes in the lattice depth affect the temperature, and we demonstrate regimes where the atomic sample can be significantly heated or cooled. When the Fermi energy of the system is near the location of a band gap the cooling regimes disappear for all temperatures and the system can only be heated by lattice loading. For samples with greater than one fermion per site we find that lattice loading can lead to a large increase in the degeneracy of the system. We study the scaling properties of the system in the degenerate regimes and assess the effects of non-adiabatic loading.

Properties of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation: Projected Ehrenfest relations and the optimal plane wave basis

We investigate the properties of the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a condensate interacting with a stationary thermal cloud derived by Gardiner and coworkers. We find the appropriate Ehrenfest relations for the SGPE, including the effect of growth noise and projector terms arising from the energy cutoff. This is carried out in the high temperature regime appropriate for the SGPE, which simplifies the action of the projectors. The validity condition for neglecting the projector terms in the Ehrenfest relations is found to be more stringent than the usual condition of validity of the truncated Wigner method or classical field method -- which is that all modes are highly occupied. In addition it is required that the overlap of the nonlinear term with the lowest energy eigenstate of the non-condensate band is small. We show how to use the Ehrenfest relations along with the corrections generated by the projector to monitor dynamical artifacts arising from the cutoff. We also investigate the effect of using different bases to describe a harmonically trapped BEC at finite temperature by comparing the condensate fraction found using the plane wave and single particle bases. We show that the equilibrium properties are strongly dependent on the choice of basis. There is thus an optimal choice of plane wave basis for a given cut-off energy and we show that this basis gives the best reproduction of the single particle spectrum, the condensate fraction and the position and momentum densities.

Wannier states and Bose-Hubbard parameters for 2D optical lattices

We consider the physical implementation of a 2D optical lattice with schemes involving 3 and 4 light fields. We illustrate the wide range of geometries available to the 3 beam lattice, and compare the general potential properties of the two lattice schemes. Numerically calculating the band structure we obtain the Wannier states and evaluate the parameters of the Bose-Hubbard models relevant to these lattices. Using these results we demonstrate lattices that realize Bose-Hubbard models with 2, 4, or 6 nearest neighbors, and quantify the extent that these different lattices effect the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition.

Adiabatic loading of bosons into optical lattices

The entropy-temperature curves are calculated for non-interacting bosons in a 3D optical lattice and a 2D lattice with transverse harmonic confinement for ranges of depths and filling factors relevant to current experiments. We demonstrate regimes where the atomic sample can be significantly heated or cooled by adiabatically changing the lattice depth. We indicate the critical points for condensation in the presence of a lattice and show that the system can be reversibly condensed by changing the lattice depth. We discuss the effects of interactions on our results and consider non-adiabatic processes.

Dynamics of a period-three pattern loaded Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We discuss the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate initially loaded into every third site of an optical lattice using a description based upon the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. An analytic solution is developed for the case of a periodic initial condition and is compared with numerical simulations for more general initial configurations. We show that mean field effects in this system can cause macroscopic quantum self-trapping, a phenomenon already predicted for double well systems. In the presence of a uniform external potential, the atoms exhibit generalized Bloch oscillations which can be interpreted in terms of the interference of three different Bloch states. We also discuss how the momentum distribution of the system can be used as experimental signature of the macroscopic self trapping effect.

Excitation and damping of collective modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional lattice

The mode structure of a Bose-Einstein condensate non-adiabatically loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice is studied by analyzing the visibility of the interference pattern as well as the radial profile of the condensate after a time-of-flight. A simple model is proposed that predicts the short-time decrease of the visibility as a function of the condensate parameters. In the radial direction, heavily damped oscillations are observed, as well as an increase in the condensate temperature. These findings are interpreted as a re-thermalization due to dissipation of the initial condensate excitations into high-lying modes.

Theory of coherent Bragg spectroscopy of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of Bragg spectroscopy from a Bose-Einstein condensate at T=0K. We demonstrate that within the linear response regime, both a quantum field theory treatment and a meanfield Gross-Pitaevskii treatment lead to the same value for the mean evolution of the quasiparticle operators. The observable for Bragg spectroscopy experiments, which is the spectral response function of the momentum transferred to the condensate, can therefore be calculated in a meanfield formalism. We analyse the behaviour of this observable by carrying out numerical simulations in axially symmetric three-dimensional cases and in two dimensions. An approximate analytic expression for the observable is obtained and provides a means for identifying the relative importance of three broadening and shift mechanisms (meanfield, Doppler, and finite pulse duration) in different regimes. We show that the suppression of scattering at small values of q observed by Stamper-Kurn et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2876 (1999)] is accounted for by the meanfield treatment, and can be interpreted in terms of the interference of the u and v quasiparticle amplitudes. We also show that, contrary to the assumptions of previous analyses, there is no regime for trapped condensates for which the spectral response function and the dynamic structure factor are equivalent. Our numerical calculations can also be performed outside the linear response regime, and show that at large laser intensities a significant decrease in the shift of the spectral response function can occur due to depletion of the initial condensate.

Spatially selective Bragg scattering: a signature for vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates

We demonstrate that Bragg scattering from a condensate can be sensitive to the spatial phase distribution of the initial state. This allows preferential scattering from a selected spatial region, and provides a robust signature for a vortex state. We develop an analytic model which accurately describes this phenomenon and we give quantitative predictions for current experimental conditions.

Three-dimensional vortex dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates

We simulate in the mean-field limit the effects of rotationally stirring a three-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with a Gaussian laser beam. A single vortex cycling regime is found for a range of trap geometries, and is well described as coherent cycling between the ground and the first excited vortex states. The critical angular speed of stirring for vortex formation is quantitatively predicted by a simple model. We report preliminary results for the collisions of vortex lines, in which sections may be exchanged.
