Non-connected Lie groups, twisted equivariant bundles and coverings

Let $Γ$ be a finite group acting on a Lie group $G$. We consider a class of group extensions $1 \to G \to \hat{G} \to Γ\to 1$ defined by this action and a $2$-cocycle of $Γ$ with values in the centre of $G$. We establish and study a correspondence between $\hat{G}$-bundles on a manifold and twisted $Γ$-equivariant bundles with structure group $G$ on a suitable Galois $Γ$-covering of the manifold. We also describe this correspondence in terms of non-abelian cohomology. Our results apply, in particular, to the case of a compact or reductive complex Lie group $\hat{G}$, since such a group is always isomorphic to an extension as above, where $G$ is the connected component of the identity and $Γ$ is the group of connected components of $\hat{G}$.

Homotopy Type of Moduli Spaces of G-Higgs Bundles and Reducibility of the Nilpotent Cone

Let $G$ be a real reductive Lie group, and $H^{\mathbb{C}}$ the complexification of its maximal compact subgroup $H\subset G$. We consider classes of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq2$ whose underlying $H^{\mathbb{C}}$-principal bundle is unstable. This allows us to find obstructions to a deformation retract from the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$ to the moduli space of $H^{\mathbb{C}}$-bundles over $X$, in contrast with the situation when $g=1$, and to show reducibility of the nilpotent cone of the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles, for $G$ complex.

Quiver Bundles and Wall Crossing for Chains

Holomorphic chains on a Riemann surface arise naturally as fixed points of the natural C*-action on the moduli space of Higgs bundles. In this paper we associate a new quiver bundle to the Hom-complex of two chains, and prove that stability of the chains implies stability of this new quiver bundle. Our approach uses the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for quiver bundles. Moreover, we use our result to give a new proof of a key lemma on chains (due to Álvarez-Cónsul, García-Prada and Schmitt), which has been important in the study of Higgs bundle moduli; this proof relies on stability and thus avoids the direct use of the chain vortex equations.

Betti numbers of the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic Higgs bundles

We compute the Betti numbers of the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic Higgs bundles, using Morse theory. A key point is that certain critical submanifolds of the Morse function can be identified with moduli spaces of parabolic triples. These moduli spaces come in families depending on a real parameter and we study their variation with this parameter.
