Evidence for magnetic clusters in BaCoO$_3$

Magnetic properties of the transition metal oxide BaCoO$_3$ are analyzed on the basis of the experimental and theoretical literature available via ab inito calculations. These can be explained by assuming the material to be formed by noninteracting ferromagnetic clusters of about 1.2 nm in diameter separated by about 3 diameters. Above about 50 K, the so-called blocking temperature, superparamagnetic behavior of the magnetic clusters occurs and, above 250 K, paramagnetism sets in.

Magnetic structure and orbital ordering in BaCoO3 from first-principles calculations

Ab initio calculations using the APW+lo method as implemented in the WIEN2k code have been used to describe the electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional system BaCoO3. Both, GGA and LDA+U approximations were employed to study different orbital and magnetic orderings. GGA predicts a metallic ground state whereas LDA+U calculations yield an insulating and ferromagnetic ground state (in a low-spin state) with an alternating orbital ordering along the Co-Co chains, consistent with the available experimental data.

Band structure effects in nitrogen K-edge resonant inelastic X ray scattering from GaN

Systematic experimental data on resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) in GaN near the N K-edge are presented for the first time. Excitation energy dependence of the spectral structures manifests the band structure effects originating from momentum selectivity of the RIXS process. This finding allows obtaining k-resolved band structure information for GaN crystals and nanostructures.

Metallic "Ferroelectricity" in the Pyrochlore Cd2Re2O7

A class of materials known as ``ferroelectric metals'' was discussed theoretically by Anderson and Blount in 1965 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 217 (1965)], but to date no examples of this class have been reported. Here we present measurements of the elastic moduli of Cd2Re2O7 through the 200 K cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition. A Landau analysis of the moduli reveals that the transition is consistent with Cd2Re2O7 being classified as a ``ferroelectric metal'' in the weaker sense described by Anderson and Blount (loss of a center of symmetry). First-principles calculations of the lattice instabilities indicate that the dominant lattice instability corresponds to a two-fold degenerate mode with Eu symmetry, and that motions of the O ions forming the O octahedra dominate the energetics of the transition.

Origin of the photoemission final-state effects in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 by very-low-energy electron diffraction

Very-low-energy electron diffraction with a support of full-potential band calculations is used to achieve the energy positions, K// dispersions, lifetimes and Fourier compositions of the photoemission final states in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 at low excitation energies. Highly structured final states explain the dramatic matrix element effects in photoemission. Intense c(2x2) diffraction reveals a significant extrinsic contribution to the shadow Fermi surface. The final-state diffraction effects can be utilized to tune the photoemission experiment on specific valence states or Fermi surface replicas.

Electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ

We study the electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ by means of density-functional band theory, Hubbard model calculations, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The experimental spectra reveal significant quantitative and qualitative discrepancies to band theory. We demonstrate that the dispersive behavior as well as the temperature-dependence of the spectra can be consistently explained by the finite-energy physics of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at metallic doping. The model description can even be made quantitative, if one accounts for an enhanced hopping integral at the surface, most likely caused by a relaxation of the topmost molecular layer. Within this interpretation the ARPES data provide spectroscopic evidence for the existence of spin-charge separation on an energy scale of the conduction band width. The failure of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for the {\it low-energy} spectral behavior is attributed to interchain coupling and the additional effect of electron-phonon interaction.

Band- and k-dependent Self-Energy Effects in the Unoccupied and Occupied Quasiparticle Band Structure of Cu

Excited-state self-energy effects in the electronic structure of Cu, a prototype weakly correlated system containing states with different degrees of localization, are investigated with emphasis on the unoccupied states up to 40 eV above the Fermi level. The analysis employs the experimental quasiparticle states mapped under full control of the 3-dimensional wavevector k using very-low energy electron diffraction for the unoccupied states and photoemission for the occupied states. The self-energy corrections to the density-functional theory show a distinct band- and k-dependence. This is supported by quasiparticle GW calculations performed within the framework of linearized muffin-tin orbitals. Our results suggest however that the GW approximation may be less accurate in the localized d-bands of Cu with their short-range charge fluctuations. We identify a connection of the self-energy behavior with the spatial localization of the one-electron wavefunctions in the unit cell and with their behavior in the core region. Mechanisms of this connection are discussed based on the local-density picture and on the non-local exchange interaction with the valence states.

Spectroscopic signatures of spin-charge separation in the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ

The electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The experimental spectra reveal significant discrepancies to band theory. We demonstrate that the measured dispersions can be consistently mapped onto the one-dimensional Hubbard model at finite doping. This interpretation is further supported by a remarkable transfer of spectral weight as function of temperature. The ARPES data thus show spectroscopic signatures of spin-charge separation on an energy scale of the conduction band width.

First-principles study of the ferroelastic phase transition in CaCl_2

First-principles density-functional calculations within the local-density approximation and the pseudopotential approach are used to study and characterize the ferroelastic phase transition in calcium chloride (CaCl_2). In accord with experiment, the energy map of CaCl_2 has the typical features of a pseudoproper ferroelastic with an optical instability as ultimate origin of the phase transition. This unstable optic mode is close to a pure rigid unit mode of the framework of chlorine atoms and has a negative Gruneisen parameter. The ab-initio ground state agrees fairly well with the experimental low temperature structure extrapolated at 0K. The calculated energy map around the ground state is interpreted as an extrapolated Landau free-energy and is successfully used to explain some of the observed thermal properties. Higher-order anharmonic couplings between the strain and the unstable optic mode, proposed in previous literature as important terms to explain the soft-phonon temperature behavior, are shown to be irrelevant for this purpose. The LAPW method is shown to reproduce the plane-wave results in CaCl_2 within the precision of the calculations, and is used to analyze the relative stability of different phases in CaCl_2 and the chemically similar compound SrCl_2.

Electronic structure of the pyrochlore metals Cd2Os2O7 and Cd2Re2O7

First principles density functional calculations within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) are reported for pyrochlore Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ and Cd$_{2}$Re$_{2}$O$_7$. The transition metal $t_{2g}$ manifolds are found to be well separated in energy from the O $2p$ bands and from the higher lying $e_g$ and Cd derived bands. The active electronic structure in the $t_{2g}$ manifold near the Fermi energy, $E_F$ is found to be significantly modified by spin orbit interactions, which we include. Both materials show semi-metallic band structures, in which the $E_F$ lies in an pseudogap. The band structure of Cd$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ near $E_F$ is dominated by very heavy hole and electron bands, though at $E_F$ the electron sections are lighter. Cd$_{2}$Re$_{2}$O$_7$ has heavy hole bands but moderate mass electron states. The results are discussed in terms of measured transport and thermodynamic properties of these compounds as well as the very different ground states of these two materials.

Itinerant metamagnetism and possible spin transition in LaCoO$_3$ by temperature/hole doping

The electronic structure of the perovskite La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$ has been obtained as a function of Sr substitution and volume from a series of generalized-gradient-corrected, full-potential, spin-density-functional band structure calculations. The energetics of different spin configurations are estimated using the fixed-spin-moment (FSM) method. From the total energy vs spin magnetic moment curve for LaCoO$_3$ the ground state is found to be nonmagnetic with the Co ions in a low-spin (LS) state, a result that is consistent with the experimental observations. Somewhat higher in energy, we find an intermediate-spin (IS) state with spin moment $\sim$1.2 $μ_{B}$/f.u. From the anomalous temperature dependent susceptibility along with the observation of an IS state we predict metamagnetism in LaCoO$_3$ originating from an LS-to-IS transition. The IS state is found to be metallic and the high-spin (HS) state of LaCoO$_3$ is predicted to be a half-metallic ferromagnet. With increasing temperature, which is simulated by a corresponding change of the lattice parameters we have observed the disappearence of the metamagnetic solution that is associated with the IS state. The FSM calculations on La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$ suggest that the hole doping stabilizes the IS state and the calculated magnetic moments are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. Our calculations show that the HS state cannot be stabilized by temperature or hole doping since the HS state is significantly higher in energy than the LS or IS state. Hence the spin-state transition in LaCoO$_3$ by temperature/hole doping is from an LS to an IS spin state and the present work rules out the other possibilities reported in the literature.

Quadrupole moments of high-spin isomers: test of the tilted-axis cranking model

We report the results of recent measurements of the spectroscopic quadrupole moments of high-spin isomers. For the K=35/2- five-quasiparticle isomer in 179W we measured Q_s=4.00(+0.83)(-1.06)eb. It corresponds to a smaller deformation compared to the ground states of the W isotopes and is in disagreement with the current theoretical predictions. We also measured the quadrupole moment of the I=11- isomer in 196Pb, Q_s=(-)3.41(66)eb. It has the same proton s(-2)1/2 h9/2 i13/2 configuration as the one suggested for the I=16- magnetic bandhead which allows to deduce the quadrupole moment of the 16- state as Q_s=-0.316(97)eb. This small value proves the near sphericity of the bandhead.

Electronic Structure and Heavy Fermion Behavior in LiV_2O_4

First principles density functional calculations of the electronic and magnetic properties of spinel-structure LiV$_{2}$O$_{4}$ have been performed using the full potential linearized augmented planewave method. The calculations show that the electronic structure near the Fermi energy consists of a manifold of 12 bands derived from V $t_{2g}$ states, weakly hybridized with O p states. While the total width of this active manifold is approximately 2 eV, it may be roughly decomposed into two groups: high velocity bands and flatter bands, although these mix in density functional calculations. The flat bands, which are the more atomic-like lead to a high density of states and magnetic instability of local moment character. The value of the on-site exchange energy is sensitive to the exact exchange correlation parameterization used in the calculations, but is much larger than the interaction between neighboring spins, reflecting the weak coupling of the magnetic system with the high velocity bands. A scenario for the observed heavy fermion behavior is discussed in which conduction electrons in the dispersive bands are weakly scattered by local moments associated with strongly correlated electrons in the heavy bands. This is analogous to that in conventional Kondo type heavy fermions, but is unusual in that both the local moments and conduction electrons come from the same d-manifold.
