Ferroelectricity in the 1 $μ$C cm$^{-2}$ range induced by canted antiferromagnetism in (LaMn$_{3}$)Mn$_{4}$O$_{12}$

Pyroelectric current and magnetoelectric coupling measurements on polycrystalline samples of the quadruple perovskite (LaMn$_{3}$)Mn$_{4}$O$_{12}$ give evidence of ferroelectricity driven by the antiferromagnetic ordering of the $B$-site Mn$^{3+}$ ions at $T_{N,B}$=78 K with record values of remnant electric polarization up to $P$=0.56 $μ$C cm$^{-2}$. X-ray diffraction measurements indicates an anomalous behavior of the monoclinic $β$ angle at $T_{N,B}$, which suggests that $P$ lies in the $ac$-plane, where the moments are collinear, so we conclude that exchange striction is the mechanism of spin-driven ferroelectricity. Polarization values $\sim$3 $μ$C cm$^{-2}$ are expected in single crystals, which would open the avenue towards practical multiferroic applications.

Inhomogeneous magnetism in the doped kagome lattice of LaCuO2.66

The hole-doped kagome lattice of Cu2+ ions in LaCuO2.66 was investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), electron spin resonance (ESR), electrical resistivity, bulk magnetization and specific heat measurements. For temperatures above ~180 K, the spin and charge properties show an activated behavior suggestive of a narrow-gap semiconductor. At lower temperatures, the results indicate an insulating ground state which may or may not be charge ordered. While the frustrated spins in remaining patches of the original kagome lattice might not be directly detected here, the observation of coexisting non-magnetic sites, free spins and frozen moments reveals an intrinsically inhomogeneous magnetism. Numerical simulations of a 1/3-diluted kagome lattice rationalize this magnetic state in terms of a heterogeneous distribution of cluster sizes and morphologies near the site-percolation threshold.

Quantum Tunneling in Half-Integer-Spin Kagome-Lattice Langasites

Employing the muon spin relaxation technique we evidence temperature independent magnetic fluctuations persisting down to the lowest temperatures in the samarium-based ($J=5/2$) kagome-lattice Langasite. A detailed bulk-magnetization characterization and comparison to the neodymium-based ($J=9/2$) compound allow us to assign the persistent spin dynamics to a quantum tunneling process. This is facilitated by pairwise anisotropic magnetic interactions, leading to a universal scaling of the muon relaxation. Our study reveals a remarkable analogy between weakly interacting half-integer-spin rare-earth magnets and molecular nanomagnets.

Internal-strain mediated coupling between polar Bi and magnetic Mn ions in the defect-free quadruple-perovskite BiMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$

By means of neutron powder diffraction, we investigated the effect of the polar Bi$^{3+}$ ion on the magnetic ordering of the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in BiMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, the counterpart with \textit{quadruple} perovskite structure of the \textit{simple} perovskite BiMnO$_3$. The data are consistent with a \textit{noncentrosymmetric} spacegroup $Im$ which contrasts the \textit{centrosymmetric} one $I2/m$ previously reported for the isovalent and isomorphic compound LaMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, which gives evidence of a Bi$^{3+}$-induced polarization of the lattice. At low temperature, the two Mn$^{3+}$ sublattices of the $A'$ and $B$ sites order antiferromagnetically (AFM) in an independent manner at 25 and 55 K, similarly to the case of LaMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$. However, both magnetic structures of BiMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$ radically differ from those of LaMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$. In BiMn$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$ the moments $\textbf{M}_{A'}$ of the $A'$ sites form an anti-body AFM structure, whilst the moments \textbf{M}$_{B}$ of the $B$ sites result from a large and \textit{uniform} modulation $\pm \textbf{M}_{B,b}$ along the b-axis of the moments \textbf{M}$_{B,ac}$ in the $ac$-plane. The modulation is strikingly correlated with the displacements of the Mn$^{3+}$ ions induced by the Bi$^{3+}$ ions. Our analysis unveils a strong magnetoelastic coupling between the internal strain created by the Bi$^{3+}$ ions and the moment of the Mn$^{3+}$ ions in the $B$ sites. This is ascribed to the high symmetry of the oxygen sites and to the absence of oxygen defects, two characteristics of quadruple perovskites not found in simple ones, which prevent the release of the Bi$^{3+}$-induced strain through distortions or disorder. This demonstrates the possibility of a large magnetoelectric coupling in proper ferroelectrics and suggests a novel concept of internal strain engineering for multiferroics design.

Ground State of the Easy-Axis Rare-Earth Kagomé Langasite Pr$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$

We report muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and $^{69,71}$Ga nuclear quadrupolar resonance (NQR) local-probe investigations of the kagomé compound Pr$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$. Small quasi-static random internal fields develop below 40 K and persist down to our base temperature of 21 mK. They originate from hyperfine-enhanced $^{141}$Pr nuclear magnetism which requires a non-magnetic Pr$^{3+}$ crystal-field (CF) ground state. Besides, we observe a broad maximum of the relaxation rate at $\simeq 10$ K which we attribute to the population of the first excited magnetic CF level. Our results yield a Van-Vleck paramagnet picture, at variance with the formerly proposed spin-liquid ground state.

Easy-Axis Kagomé Antiferromagnet: Local-Probe Study of Nd$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$

We report a local-probe investigation of the magnetically anisotropic kagomé compound Nd$_3$Ga$_5$SiO$_{14}$. Our zero-field $μ$SR results provide a direct evidence of a fluctuating collective paramagnetic state down to 60 mK, supported by a wipe-out of the Ga nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal below 25 K. At 60 mK a dynamics crossover to a much more static state is observed by $μ$SR in magnetic fields above 0.5 T. Accordingly, the NMR signal is recovered at low $T$ above a threshold field, revealing a rapid temperature and field variation of the magnetic fluctuations.

Double superconducting transition in the filled skutterudite PrOs4Sb12 and sample characterizations

A thorough characterization of many samples of the filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12 is provided. We find that the double superconducting transition in the specific heat Tc1~1.89K and Tc2~1.72K tends to appear in samples with a large residual resistivity ratio, large specific heat jump at the superconducting transition and with the highest absolute value of the specific heat above Tc1. However, we present evidence which casts doubt on the intrinsic nature of the double superconducting transition. The ratio of the two specific heat jumps ΔC(Tc1)/ΔC(Tc2) shows a wide range of values on crystals from different batches but also within the same batch. This ratio was strongly reduced by polishing a sample down to 120um. Remarkably, three samples exhibit a single sharp transition of ~15mK in width at Tc~1.7K. The normalized specific heat jump (C-Cnormal)/Cnormal at Tc of two of them is higher than ~32% so larger than the sum of the two specific heat jumps when a double transition exists. As an evidence of better quality, the slope in the transition is at least two time steeper. We discuss the origins of the double transition; in particular we consider, based on X-ray diffraction results, a scenario involving Pr-vacancies. The superconducting phase diagram under magnetic field of a sample with a single transition is fitted with a two-band model taking into account the good values for the gap as deduced from thermal conductivity measurements.

Magnetic Frustration on a Kagomé Lattice in R$\_{3}$Ga$\_{5}$SiO$\_{14}$ Langasites with R = Nd, Pr

In the R$\_{3}$Ga$\_{5}$SiO$\_{14}$ compounds, the network R of rare earth cations form well separated planes of corner sharing triangles topologically equivalent to a kagomé lattice. Powder samples and single crystals with R = Nd and Pr were prepared and magnetostatic measurements were performed under magnetic field up to 10 T in the temperature range from 1.6 K to 400 K. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility at the high temperatures where only the quadrupolar term of the crystal electric field prevails, suggests that the Nd and Pr magnetic moments can be modeled as coplanar elliptic rotators perpendicular to the three fold axis of the crystal structure that interact antiferromagnetically. Nonetheless, a disordered phase that can be ascribed to geometric frustration persists down to the lowest temperature which is about 25 times smaller than the energy scale for the exchange interactions.

Non-magnetic insulator state in Na1CoO2 and phase separation of Na vacancies

Crystallographic, magnetic and NMR properties of a NaxCoO2 single crystal with x~1 are presented. We identify the stoichiometric Na1CoO2 phase, which is shown to be a non-magnetic insulator, as expected for homogeneous planes of Co3+ ions with S=0. In addition, we present evidence that, because of slight average Na deficiency, chemical and electronic phase separation leads to a segregation of Na vacancies into the well-defined, magnetic, Na0.8CoO2 phase. The importance of phase separation is discussed in the context of magnetic order for x~0.8 and the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition for x->1.

Decoupling of orbital and spin degrees of freedom in Li1-xNaxNiO2

In the Li1-xNaxNiO2 solid solutions three different single phase regions exist: for x > 0.9, forx = 0.7 and for x < 0.3. Although the intermediate compound does not show the cooperative Jahn-Teller transition of NaNiO2, its magnetic properties remain very similar with, in particular, the low temperature 3D magnetic ordering. Therefore, the strong coupling between orbital and spindegrees of freedom, characteristic of other oxides like perovskites, and usually invoked to explainthe absence of both long-range orbital and magnetic ordering in LiNiO2, seems not to take placein these layered compounds with 90-degree bonds. We also discuss the relevance of the O crystal fieldsplitting induced by the trigonal distortion, in generating AFM Ni-Ni in-plane interactions.

Effect of Sr substitution on superconductivity in Hg2(Ba1-ySry)2YCu2O8-d (part 1): a neutron powder diffraction study

The effect of Sr chemical pressure on superconductivity was investigated in Hg2(Ba1-ySry)2YCu2O8-d. The samples were synthesized at high pressure-high temperature from y = 0.0 to full substitution, y = 1.0. These Sr-substituted compounds are superconducting, without Ca doping on the Y site, and show an increasing Tc with Sr, reaching 42 K for y = 1.0. A detailed neutron powder diffraction study compares the structural changes induced by this chemical Sr/Ba substitution and the mechanical pressure effects in the Hg-2212 system. It shows the strong decrease of the three Ba/Sr-O distances and consequently the shrinkage of Cu-O1(in-plane) and Cu-O2(apical) bonds. These structural changes, by affecting the charge transfer which occurs between the charge reservoir and the superconducting block, are responsible of the Tc enhancement with Sr content.

Effect of Sr substitution on superconductivity in Hg2(Ba1-ySry)2YCu2O8-d (part2): bond valence sum approach of the hole distribution

The effects of Sr substitution on superconductivity, and more particulary the changes induced in the hole doping mechanism, were investigated in Hg2(Ba1-ySry)2YCu2O8-d by a "bond valence sum" analysis with Sr content from y = 0.0 to y = 1.0. A comparison with CuBa2YCu2O7-d and Cu2Ba2YCu2O8 systems suggests a possible explanation of the Tc enhancement from 0 K for y = 0.0 to 42 K for y = 1.0. The charge distribution among atoms of the unit cell was determined from the refined structure, for y = 0.0 to 1.0. It shows a charge transfer to the superconducting CuO2 plane via two doping channels pi(1) and pi(2), i.e. through O2(apical)-Cu and Ba/Sr-O1 bonds respectively.

Single crystal growth of MgB2 and thermodynamics of Mg-B-N system at high pressure

Single crystals of MgB2 have been grown at high pressure via the peritectic decomposition of MgNB9. The crystals are of a size up to 1.5x0.9x0.2 mm3 with a weight up to 0.23 mg, and typically have transition temperatures between 37 and 39 with a width of 0.3-0.5 K. Investigations of the P-T phase diagram prove that the MgB2 phase is stable at least up to 2190 C at high hydrostatic pressure in the presence of Mg vapor under high pressure. Small variations of Tc are caused by doping with metal elements from the precursor or annealing of defects during the crystal growth process.

MgB2 single crystals: high pressure growth and anisotropic properties

Single crystals of MgB2 with a size up to 1.5x0.9x0.2 mm3 have been grown with a high pressure cubic anvil technique. The crystal growth process is very peculiar and involves an intermediate nitride, namely MgNB9. Single crystals of BN and MgB2 grow simultaneously by a peritectic decomposition of MgNB9. Magnetic measurements in fields of 1-5 Oe show sharp transitions to the superconducting state at 37-38.6 K with width of ~0.5 K. The high quality of the crystals allowed the accurate determination of magnetic, transport and optical properties as well as scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) and decoration studies. Investigations of crystals with torque magnetometry show that Hc2//c is very low (24 kOe at 15 K), while Hc2//ab increases up to 140 kOe at 15 K. The upper critical field anisotropy gamma = Hc2//ab/ Hc2//c was found to be temperature dependent (decreasing from 6 at 15 K to 2.8 at 35 K). The effective anisotropy gamma_eff, as calculated from reversible torque data near Tc, is field dependent (increasing roughly linearly from 2 in zero field to 3.7 in 10 kOe). The temperature and field dependence of the anisotropy can be related to the double gap structure of MgB2 with a large two-dimensional gap and small three-dimensional gap, the latter being rapidly suppressed in a magnetic field. Torque magnetometry investigations show a pronounced peak effect, indicating an order-disorder transition of vortex matter. Decoration experiments and STS visualise a hexagonal vortex lattice. STS spectra evidence two gaps (3 meV/6 meV) with direction dependent weight. Magneto-optic investigations with H//c show a clear signature of the smaller of the two gaps, disappearing in fields higher than Hc2//c.

Absence of a structural transition up to 40 Gpa in MgB2 and the relevance of magnesium non-stoichiometry

We report measurements on MgB2 up to ~40GPa. Increasing pressure yields a monotonous decrease of the lattice parameters and of the c/a ratio, but no structural transition down to parameters smaller than those of AlB2. The transition superconducting temperature also decreases with temperature in a sample dependent way. The results are explained by an increase of the filling of the 2D pxy bands with pressure, the Mg stoichiometry determining the starting position of the Fermi level. Our measurements indicate that these hole bands are the relevant ones for superconductivity.
