Relativistic corrections in magnetic systems

We present a weak-relativistic limit comparison between the Kohn-Sham-Dirac equation and its approximate form containing the exchange coupling, which is used in almost all relativistic codes of density-functional theory. For these two descriptions, an exact expression of the Dirac Green's function in terms of the non-relativistic Green's function is first derived and then used to calculate the effective Hamiltonian, i.e., Pauli Hamiltonian, and effective velocity operator in the weak-relativistic limit. We point out that, besides neglecting orbital magnetism effects, the approximate Kohn-Sham-Dirac equation also gives relativistic corrections which differ from those of the exact Kohn-Sham-Dirac equation. These differences have quite serious consequences: in particular, the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of an uniaxial ferromagnet and the anisotropic magnetoresistance of a cubic ferromagnet are found from the approximate Kohn-Sham-Dirac equation to be of order $1/c^2$, whereas the correct results obtained from the exact Kohn-Sham-Dirac equation are of order $1/c^4$ . We give a qualitative estimate of the order of magnitude of these spurious terms.

Anomalous Hall effect and weak localization corrections in a ferromagnet

In this paper, we report results on the anomalous Hall effect. First, we summarize analytical calculations based on the Kubo formalism : explicit expressions for both skew-scattering and side-jump are derived and weak-localization corrections are discussed. Next, we present numerical calculations of the anomalous Hall resistivity based on the Dirac equation. Qualitative agreement with experiments is obtained.

Weak localization in ferromagnets with spin-orbit interaction

Weak localization corrections to conductivity of ferromagnetic systems are studied theoretically in the case when spin-orbit interaction plays a significant role. Two cases are analyzed in detail: (i) the case when the spin-orbit interaction is due to scattering from impurities, and (ii) the case when the spin-orbit interaction results from reduced dimensionality of the system and is of the Bychkov-Rashba type. Results of the analysis show that the localization corrections to conductivity of ferromagnetic metals lead to a negative magnetoresistance -- also in the presence of the spin-orbit scattering. Positive magnetoresistance due to weak antilocalization, typical of nonmagnetic systems, does not occur in ferromagnetic systems. In the case of two-dimensional ferromagnets, the quantum corrections depend on the magnetization orientation with respect to the plane of the system.

Localization corrections to the anomalous Hall effect in a ferromagnet

We calculate the localization corrections to the anomalous Hall conductivity related to the contribution of spin-orbit scattering into the current vertex (side-jump mechanism). We show that in contrast to the ordinary Hall effect, there exists a nonvanishing localization correction to the anomalous Hall resistivity. The correction to the anomalous Hall conductivity vanishes in the case of side-jump mechanism, but is nonzero for the skew scattering. The total correction to the nondiagonal conductivity related to both mechanisms, does not compensate the correction to the diagonal conductivity.

Discovery of a bipolar and highly variable mass outflow from the symbiotic binary StHa 190

A highly and rapidly variable bipolar mass outflow from StHa 190 has been discovered, the first time in a yellow symbiotic star. Permitted emission lines are flanked by symmetrical jet features and multi-component P-Cyg profiles, with velocities up to 300 km/sec. Given the high orbital inclination of the binary, if the jets leave the system nearly perpendicular to the orbital plane, the de-projected velocity equals or exceeds the escape velocity (1000 km/sec). StHa190 looks quite peculiar in many other respects: the hot component is an O-type sub-dwarf without an accretion disk or a veiling nebular continuum and the cool component is a G7 III star rotating at a spectacular 105 km/sec unseen by a large margin in field G giants.

Metal Abundances of Red Clump Stars in Open Clusters: I. NGC 6819

We present an analysis of high dispersion spectra (R~40000) of three red clump stars in the old open cluster NGC 6819. The spectra were obtained with SARG, the high dispersion spectrograph of the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. The spectra were analyzed using both equivalent widths measured with an automatic procedure, and comparisons with synthetic spectra. NGC 6819 is found to be slightly metal-rich ([Fe/H]= +0.09 +/-0.03, internal error); there are no previous high resolution studies to compare with. Most element-to-element abundance ratios are close to solar; we find a slight excess of Si, and a significant Na overabundance. Our spectra can also be used to derive the interstellar reddening towards the cluster, by comparing the observed colours with those expected from line excitation: we derive E(B-V)=0.14 +/-0.04, in agreement with the most recent estimate for this cluster.
