A new indirect measurement method of the electron temperature for the Protosphera's pinch plasma

This article presents a new method for estimating the electron temperature of the Protosphera's screw pinch. The temperature radial profile is obtained by a self-consistent modeling of a 1D MHD equilibrium along with a 0D power balance of the plasma column, given measurements and estimates of the axial pinch plasma current, of the plasma rotational frequency and, at the equatorial plane, of the electron density radial profile, of the edge poloidal magnetic field, of the edge electron temperature and of the neutrals pressure in the vacuum vessel. The plasma is considered in equilibrium with its neutral phase and in constant rotation. A MATLAB code has been developed with the aim of estimating the MHD radial equilibrium profiles, the thermodynamic plasma state and the neutrals profile. The numerical estimates are compared with available experimental data showing a good agreement.

Latest results on quiescent and post-disruption runaway electron mitigation experiments at Frascati Tokamak Upgrade

Results from the last FTU campaigns on the deuterium large (wrt FTU volume) pellet REs suppression capability, mainly due to the induced burst MHD activity expelling REs seed are presented for discharges with 0.5 MA and 5.3T. Clear indications of avalanche multiplication of REs following single pellet injection on 0.36 MA flat-top discharges is shown together with quantitative indications of dissipative effects in terms of critical electrical field increase due to fan-like instabilities. Analysis of large fan-like instabilities on post-disruption RE beams, that seem to be correlated with low electrical field and background density drops, reveal their strong RE energy suppression capability suggesting a new strategy for RE energy suppression controlling large fan instabilities. We demonstrate how such density drops can be induced using modulated ECRH power on post-disruption beams.

Fast dynamics of radiofrequency emission in plasmas with runaway electrons

Radiofrequency emission in the 0.4 - 3 GHz range from FTU plasmas in presence of runaway electrons (RE) has been measured with unprecedentedly high time resolution. Rapid emission bursts associated with enhanced RE pitch angle scattering reveal kinetic instabilities affecting evolution of the RE population from the buildup phase. Such measurements also provide a sensitive monitor for instabilities during early RE formation. The leading edge of radio bursts is much shorter than interleaving periods of low emission; spectral broadening during growth indicates nonlinear wave coupling as an explanation for the observed intermittency. Radiofrequency emission disappears at the beginning of post-disruption RE plateaus, and subsequently reappears in the shape of very intense bursts accompanied by strong rises of suprathermal electron cyclotron emission.

The role of MHD in causing impurity peaking in JET Hybrid plasmas

In Hybrid plasma operation in JET with its ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) it is found that n>1 tearing activity can significantly enhance the rate of on-axis peaking of tungsten impurities, which in turn significantly degrades discharge performance. Core n=1 instabilities can be beneficial in removing tungsten impurities from the plasma core (e.g. sawteeth or fishbones), but can conversely also degrade core confinement (particularly in combination with simultaneous n=3 activity). The nature of MHD instabilities in JET Hybrid discharges, with both its previous Carbon wall and subsequent JET-ILW, is surveyed statistically and the character of the instabilities is examined. Possible qualitative models for how the n>1 islands can enhance on-axis tungsten transport accumulation processes are presented.

Improved Confinement in JET High {beta} Plasmas with an ITER-Like Wall

The replacement of the JET carbon wall (C-wall) by a Be/W ITER-like wall (ILW) has affected the plasma energy confinement. To investigate this, experiments have been performed with both the C-wall and ILW to vary the heating power over a wide range for plasmas with different shapes.

Electron fishbones: Theory and experimental evidence

We discuss the processes underlying the excitation of fishbone-like internal kink instabilities driven by supra-thermal electrons generated experimentally by different means: Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) and by Lower Hybrid (LH) power injection. The peculiarity and interest of exciting these electron fishbones by ECRH only or by LH only is also analyzed. Not only the mode stability is explained, but also the transition between steady state nonlinear oscillations to bursting (almost regular) pulsations, as observed in FTU, is interpreted in terms of the LH power input. These results are directly relevant to the investigation of trapped alpha particle interactions with low-frequency MHD modes in burning plasmas: in fact, alpha particles in reactor relevant conditions are characterized by small dimensionless orbits, similarly to electrons; the trapped particle bounce averaged dynamics, meanwhile, depends on energy and not mass.
