High-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy at Jefferson Lab, Hall A

The experiment E94-107 in Hall A at Jefferson Lab started a systematic study of high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy in the 0p-shell region of nuclei such as the hypernuclei produced in electroproduction on 9Be, 12C and 16O targets. In order to increase counting rates and provide unambiguous kaon identification two superconducting septum magnets and a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector were added to the Hall A standard equipment. The high-quality beam, the good spectrometers and the new experimental devices allowed us to obtain very good results. For the first time, measurable strength with sub-MeV energy resolution was observed for the core-excited states of Lambda 12B. A high-quality Lambda 16N hypernuclear spectrum was likewise obtained. A first measurement of the Lambda binding energy for Lambda 16N, calibrated against the elementary reaction on hydrogen, was obtained with high precision, 13.76 +/- 0.16 MeV. Similarly, the first Lambda 9Li hypernuclear spectrum shows general agreement with theory (distorted-wave impulse approximation with the SLA and BS3 electroproduction models and shell-model wave functions). Some disagreement exists with respect to the relative strength of the states making up the first multiplet. A Lambda separation energy of 8.36 MeV was obtained, in agreement with previous results. It has been shown that the electroproduction of hypernuclei can provide information complementary to that obtained with hadronic probes and the gamma-ray spectroscopy technique.

Role of multichannel pi pi scattering in decays of bottomia

The effect of isoscalar S-wave multichannel pi pi -> pi pi, K antiK, eta eta scattering is considered in the analysis of decay data of the Upsilon-mesons. We show that when allowing for the final state interaction contribution to the decays Upsilon(mS) -> Upsilon(nS) pi pi (m>n, m=2,3, n=1,2) in our model-independent approach, we can explain the two-pion energetic spectra of these Upsilon transitions including the two-humped shape of the di-pion mass distribution in Upsilon(3S) -> Upsilon(1S) pi pi as the coupled-channel effect. It is shown also that the considered bottomia decay data do not offer new insights into the nature of the f0 mesons, which were not already deduced in our previous analyses of pseudoscalar meson scattering data.

Near threshold angular distributions of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X reaction

A study of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X reaction was performed using a tagged photon beam at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. The photoproduced $Λ$ was measured in the $p{π^{-}}$ decay channel by the upgraded Neutral Kaon Spectrometer (NKS2+). The momentum integrated differential cross section was determined as a function of the scatting angle of $Λ$ in the laboratory frame for five energy bins. Our results indicated a peak in the cross section at angles smaller than cos$θ^{LAB}_Λ$ = $0.96$. The experimentally obtained angular distributions were compared to isobar models, Kaon-Maid (KM) and Saclay-Lyon A (SLA), in addition to the composite Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) model. Both SLA(r$K_{1}K_γ$ = $-1.4$) and RPR describe the data quite well in contrast to the KM model, which substantially under predicted the cross section at the most forward angles. With the anticipated finalized data on $Λ$ integrated and momentum dependent differential cross sections of $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X~\cite{Kaneta_Beckford}, we present our findings on the angular distributions in this report.

The effect of multi-channel pion-pion scattering in decays of the $Υ$-family mesons

The effect of isoscalar S-wave multi-channel pion-pion scattering ($ππ\toππ,K\bar{K},ηη$) is considered in the analysis of data on decays of the $Υ$-meson family -- $Υ(2S)\toΥ(1S)ππ$, $Υ(3S)\toΥ(1S)ππ$ and $Υ(3S)\toΥ(2S)ππ$. The analysis, which aims at studying the scalar mesons, is performed jointly considering the multi-channel pion-pion scattering, which is described in our model-independent approach based on analyticity and unitarity and using an uniformizing variable method, and the charmonium decay processes $J/ψ\toϕ(ππ, K\bar{K})$, $ψ(2S)\to J/ψ(ππ)$. Results of the analysis confirm all our earlier conclusions on the scalar mesons. It is also shown that in the final states of the $Υ$-meson family decays (except for the $ππ$ scattering) the contribution of the coupled processes, e.g., $K\bar{K}\toππ$, is important even if these processes are energetically forbidden. This is in accordance with our previous conclusions on the wide resonances: If a wide resonance cannot decay into a channel which opens above its mass but the resonance is strongly connected with this channel (e.g. the $f_0(500)$ and the $K\bar}$ channel), one should consider this resonance as a multi-channel state with allowing for the indicated channel taking into account the Riemann-surface sheets related to the threshold branch-point of this channel and performing the combined analysis of the considered and coupled channels.

Spectroscopy of Lambda-9Li by electroproduction

In the absence of accurate data on the free two-body hyperon-nucleon interaction, the spectra of hypernuclei can provide information on the details of the effective hyperon-nucleon interaction. Electroproduction of the hypernucleus Lambda-9Li has been studied for the first time with sub-MeV energy resolution in Hall A at Jefferson Lab on a 9Be target. In order to increase the counting rate and to provide unambiguous kaon identification, two superconducting septum magnets and a Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) were added to the Hall A standard equipment. The cross section to low-lying states of Lambda-9Li is concentrated within 3 MeV of the ground state and can be fitted with four peaks. The positions of the doublets agree with theory while a disagreement could exist with respect to the relative strengths of the peaks in the doublets. A Lambda separation energy of 8.36 +- 0.08 (stat.) +- 0.08 (syst.) MeV was measured, in agreement with an earlier experiment.

Parameters of scalar resonances from the combined analysis of data on processes $ππ\toππ,K\bar{K},ηη$ and $J/ψ$ decays

A combined analysis of data on isoscalar S-wave processes $ππ\toππ,K\overline{K},ηη$ and on decays $J/ψ\toϕππ,ϕK\overline{K}$ from the DM2, Mark III and BESIII collaborations is performed to study $f_0$ mesons. The method of analysis is based on analyticity and unitarity and uses an uniformization procedure. In the analysis limited only to the multi-channel $ππ$-scattering data, two possible sets of parameters of the $f_0(500)$ were found: in both cases the mass was about 700 MeV but the total width was either about 600 or 930 MeV. The extension of the analysis using only the DM2 and Mark III data on the $J/ψ$ decays does not allow to choose between these sets. However, the data from BESIII on the di-pion mass distribution in the decay $J/ψ\toϕπ^+π^-$ clearly prefers the wider $f_0(500)$ state. Spectroscopic implications from results of the analysis are also discussed.

High Resolution Hypernuclear Spectroscopy at Jefferson Lab Hall A

The characteristics of the Jefferson Lab electron beam, together with those of the experimental equipment, offer a unique opportunity to study hypernuclear spectroscopy via electromagnetic induced reactions. Experiment 94-107 started a systematic study on 1p-shell targets, $^{12}C$, $^{9}Be$ and $^{16}O$. For $^{12}C$ for the first time measurable strength in the core-excited part of the spectrum between the ground state and the p state was shown in $^{12}_ΛB$ spectrum. A high-quality $^{16}_ΛN$ spectrum was produced for the first time with sub-MeV energy resolution. A very precise $Λ$ binding energy value for $^{16}_ΛN$, calibrated against the elementary $(e,e'K^+)$ reaction on hydrogen, has also been obtained. $^{9}_ΛLi$ spectrum shows some disagreement in strength for the second and third doublet with respect to the theory.

Can parameters of f_0-mesons be determined correctly analyzing only pion-pion scattering?

The coupled processes -- the pion-pion scattering and pi pi --> K antiK in the I^GJ^{PC}=0^+0^{++} channel -- are analyzed (both separately and combined) in a model-independent approach based on analyticity and unitarity and using a uniformization procedure. It is shown: 1) a structure of the Riemann surface of the S-matrix for considered coupled processes must be allowed for calculating both amplitudes and resonance parameters, such as the mass and width; 2) the combined analysis of coupled processes is needed as the analysis of only pi-pi channel does not give correct values of resonance parameters even if the Riemann surface structure is included.

p-Shell Hypernuclear Spectroscopy at JLab's Hall A and Future Prospects

The first systematic study of 1p-shell and medium-heavy hypernuclei by electroproduction of strangeness has started at Jefferson Laboratory with the experiments E89-009, E94-107, E01-011, E05-115. The main results obtained in Hall A and future prospects of the investigation of hypernuclei at Jefferson Laboratory regarding the study of the angular dependence of electroproduction of strangeness and the possibility of performing the spectroscopy of 208^Tl_Lambda are reported here.

Measurements of the photon induced production of $Λ$ in the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X process at threshold energies

An experiment was carried out with the NKS2+ in 2010 at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), in which tagged photon beams in the range of 0.8 $\le$ $E_γ$ $\le$ 1.1 GeV were impinged on a liquid $^2$H target positioned at the center of the NKS2+. The produced $Λ$ was subsequently detected by the $p{π^{-}}$ decay channel. Integrated cross sections of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X in the angular region of 0.9 $\le$ $\cosθ_Λ^{LAB}$ $\le$ 1.0 was derived and compared with preceding experimental results of the NKS2 collaboration. In addition, the momentum spectra for two photon energy regions were also procured. The $Λ$ angle dependent cross sections as a function of the scattering angle in the laboratory system was additionally deduced. We present the latest results on the excitation function of $Λ$ photoproduction, the momentum distributions, angular distributions, and polarization.

The $f_2$- and $ρ_3$-mesons in multi-channel pion-pion scattering

In a multi-channel $S$-matrix approach, data on $ππ\toππ,K\bar{K},ηη$ in the $I^GJ^{PC}=0^+2^{++}$ sector and $ππ$ scattering in the $1^+3^{--}$ sector are analyzed to study the $f_2$- and $ρ_3$-mesons, respectively. Spectroscopic implications and possible classification of the $f_2$-states in terms of the SU(3) multiplets are also discussed.

Update of High Resolution (e,e'K^+) Hypernuclear Spectroscopy at Jefferson Lab's Hall A

Updated results of the experiment E94-107 hypernuclear spectroscopy in Hall A of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), are presented. The experiment provides high resolution spectra of excitation energy for 12B_Λ, 16N_Λ, and 9Li_Λhypernuclei obtained by electroproduction of strangeness. A new theoretical calculation for 12B_Λ, final results for 16N_Λ, and discussion of the preliminary results of 9Li_Λare reported.

Cross sections and Rosenbluth separations in 1H(e, e'K+)Lambda up to Q2=2.35 GeV2

The kaon electroproduction reaction 1H(e,e'K+)Lambda was studied as a function of the virtual-photon four-momentum, Q2, total energy, W, and momentum transfer, t, for different values of the virtual- photon polarization parameter. Data were taken at electron beam energies ranging from 3.40 to 5.75 GeV. The center of mass cross section was determined for 21 kinematics corresponding to Q2 of 1.90 and 2.35 GeV2 and the longitudinal, sigmaL, and transverse, sigmaT, cross sections were separated using the Rosenbluth technique at fixed W and t. The separated cross sections reveal a flat energy dependence at forward kaon angles not satisfactorily described by existing electroproduction models. Influence of the kaon pole on the cross sections was investigated by adopting an off-shell form factor in the Regge model which better describes the observed energy dependence of sigmaT and sigmaL.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of 16N_Lambda by Electroproduction

An experimental study of the 16O(e,e'K^+)16N_Lambda reaction has been performed at Jefferson Lab. A thin film of falling water was used as a target. This permitted a simultaneous measurement of the p(e,e'K^+)Lambda,Sigma_0 exclusive reactions and a precise calibration of the energy scale. A ground-state binding energy of 13.76 +/- 0.16 MeV was obtained for 16N_Lambda with better precision than previous measurements on the mirror hypernucleus 16O_Lambda. Precise energies have been determined for peaks arising from a Lambda in s and p orbits coupled to the p_{1/2} and p_{3/2} hole states of the 15N core nucleus.

Photo- and Electroproduction of Kaons

Isobar models for the electromagnetic production of K+ and K0 are discussed with emphasis on the K0 photoproduction off neutron. Predictions of the models for the K0 photoproduction on deuteron are compared with the recent data and some properties of the elementary amplitudes are shown.

Rho-Like Mesons from Analysis of the Pion-Pion Scattering

Considering analyticity, unitarity and an influence of coupled channels, experimental data on the isovector P-wave of pion-pion scattering was analyzed to study rho-like mesons below 1900 MeV. The analysis indicates evidently that in the energy range 1200--1800 MeV, there are three rho-like mesons: rho(1250), rho(1450) and rho(1600), unlike the PDG tables. The obtained P-wave pion-pion scattering length (a_1^1=33.9+- 2.02 [10^{-3}m_{pi^+}^{-3}]) most matches to the one calculated in the local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model.
