Origin of four-fold anisotropy in square lattices of circular ferromagnetic dots

We discuss the four-fold anisotropy of in-plane ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) field $H_r$, found in a square lattice of circular Permalloy dots when the interdot distance $a$ gets comparable to the dot diameter $d$. The minimum $H_r$, along the lattice $<11>$ axes, and the maximum, along the $<10>$ axes, differ by $\sim$ 50 Oe at $a/d$ = 1.1. This anisotropy, not expected in uniformly magnetized dots, is explained by a non-uniform magnetization $\bm(\br)$ in a dot in response to dipolar forces in the patterned magnetic structure. It is well described by an iterative solution of a continuous variational procedure.

Perturbation of magnetostatic modes observed by FMRFM

Magnetostatic modes of Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) films are investigated by ferromagnetic resonance force microscopy (FMRFM). A thin film ``probe'' magnet at the tip of a compliant cantilever introduces a local inhomogeneity in the internal field of the YIG sample. This influences the shape of the sample's magnetostatic modes, thereby measurably perturbing the strength of the force coupled to the cantilever. We present a theoretical model that explains these observations; it shows that tip-induced variation of the internal field creates either a local ``potential barrier'' or ``potential well'' for the magnetostatic waves. The data and model together indicate that local magnetic imaging of ferromagnets is possible, even in the presence of long-range spin coupling, through the induction of localized magnetostatic modes predicted to arise from sufficiently strong tip fields.

Interplay between Freezing and Superconductivity in the Optimally Doped LaEu0.20Sr0.15CuO4 under Hydrostatic Pressure

We study the electronic properties of a LaEu0.20Sr0.15CuO4 single crystal under hydrostatic pressure up to 2.9 GPa. Both the freezing of the Cu 3d moments and the structural transition from the orthorhombic (LTO) to the tetragonal (LTT) phase are observed via the relaxation of the nuclear magnetization of La nuclei. Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out under pressure on the same sample. The combination of all data reveals the connection between glassy dynamics, charge localization and the disappearance of superconductivity in the LTT phase.

Theory of spin relaxation in magnetic resonance force microscopy

We study relaxation of a spin in magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) experiments. We evaluate the relaxation rate for the spin caused by high-frequency mechanical noise of the cantilever under the conditions of adiabatic spin inversion. We find qualitative agreement between the obtained relaxation time and the experimental results of Stipe {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 277602 (2001)]. Based on our analysis, we propose a method for improving the MRFM sensitivity by engineering cantilevers with reduced tip positional fluctuations.

Experimental Evidence for a Glass forming "Stripe Liquid" in the Magnetic Ground State of La1.65Eu0.2Sr0.15CuO4

We report measurements of the longitudinal ($^{139}T_1^{-1}$) and transverse ($^{139}T_2^{-1}$) decay rates of the magnetization of $^{139}$La nuclei performed in a high quality single crystal of La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$. We observe a dramatic slowing of the Cu 3d spins manifested as a sharp increase of both $^{139}T_1^{-1}$ and $^{139}T_2^{-1}$ below 30 K. We find that in this temperature range the fluctuations involve a unique time scale $τ$ which diverges as $(T-T_{\rm A})^{-1.9}$ with $T_{\rm A}\thickapprox 5$ K. This behavior is distinct from the continuous freezing observed in underdoped La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ which involves a distribution of energy barriers. By contrast, in La$_{1.65}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$, the freezing below 30K is intrinsic to its magnetic ground state and the observed power law supports the existence of a glass forming "charge stripe liquid".

Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy Measurement of Entangled Spin States

We simulate magnetic resonance force microscopy measurements of an entangled spin state. One of the entangled spins drives the resonant cantilever vibrations, while the other remote spin does not interact directly with the quasiclassical cantilever. The Schrödinger cat state of the cantilever reveals two possible outcomes of the measurement for both entangled spins.

Quantum Measurement of a Single Spin using Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy

Single-spin detection is one of the important challenges facing the development of several new technologies, e.g. single-spin transistors and solid-state quantum computation. Magnetic resonance force microscopy with a cyclic adiabatic inversion, which utilizes a cantilever oscillations driven by a single spin, is a promising technique to solve this problem. We have studied the quantum dynamics of a single spin interacting with a quasiclassical cantilever. It was found that in a similar fashion to the Stern-Gerlach interferometer the quantum dynamics generates a quantum superposition of two quasiclassical trajectories of the cantilever which are related to the two spin projections on the direction of the effective magnetic field in the rotating reference frame. Our results show that quantum jumps will not prevent a single-spin measurement if the coupling between the cantilever vibrations and the spin is small in comparison with the amplitude of the radio-frequency external field.

Anomalous NMR Magnetic Shifts in CeCoIn_5

We report ^{115}In and ^{59}Co Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 above and below T_c. The hyperfine couplings of the In and Co are anisotropic and exhibit dramatic changes below 50K due to changes in the crystal field level populations of the Ce ions. Below T_c the spin susceptibility is suppressed, indicating singlet pairing.

Formation and Dynamics of a Schrödinger-Cat State in Continuous Quantum Measurement

We consider the process of a single-spin measurement using magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) as an example of a truly continuous measurement in quantum mechanics. This technique is also important for different applications, including a measurement of a qubit state in quantum computation. The measurement takes place through the interaction of a single spin with a quasi-classical cantilever, modeled by a quantum oscillator in a coherent state in a quasi-classical region of parameters. The entire system is treated rigorously within the framework of the Schrödinger equation, without any artificial assumptions. Computer simulations of the spin-cantilever dynamics, where the spin is continuously rotated by means of cyclic adiabatic inversion, show that the cantilever evolves into a Schrödinger-cat state: the probability distribution for the cantilever position develops two asymmetric peaks that quasi-periodically appear and vanish. For a many-spin system our equations reduce to the classical equations of motion, and we accurately describe conventional MRFM experiments involving cyclic adiabatic inversion of the spin system. We surmise that the interaction of the cantilever with the environment would lead to a collapse of the wave function; however, we show that in such a case the spin does not jump into a spin eigenstate.

Superconductivity and Magnetism in a New Class of Heavy-Fermion Materials

We report a new family of Ce-based heavy-fermion compounds whose electronic specific heat coefficients range from about 400 to over 700 mJ/mole Ce-K2. Crystal in this family form as CenTmIn3n+2m, where T=Rh or Ir, n=1 or 2, and m=1, with a tetragonal structure that can be viewed as n-layers of CeIn3 units stacked sequentially along the c-axis with intervening m-layers of TIn2. Ambient and high pressure studies show that the quasi-2D layers of CeIn3 produce unconventional superconducting and magnetic ground states. This family should enable new understanding of the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in heavy-fermion materials and more generally of why heavy-fermion superconductivity prefers to develop in one structure type and not another.

Inhomogeneous Low Frequency Spin Dynamics in La_{1.65}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4

We report Cu and La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the title compound that reveal an inhomogeneous glassy behavior of the spin dynamics. A low temperature peak in the La spin lattice relaxation rate and the ``wipeout'' of Cu intensity both arise from these slow electronic spin fluctuations that reveal a distribution of activation energies. Inhomogeneous slowing of spin fluctuations appears to be a general feature of doped lanthanum cuprate.

Spin Dynamics in the LTT Phase of ~1/8 Doped Single Crystal La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4

We present La and Cu NMR relaxation measurements in single crystal La_{1.67}Eu_{0.2}Sr_{0.13}CuO_4. A strong peak in the La spin-lattice relaxation rate observed in the spin ordered state is well-described by the BPP mechanism[1] and arises from continuous slowing of electronic spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature; these spin fluctuations exhibit XY-like anisotropy in the ordered state. The spin pseudogap is enhanced by the static charge-stripe order in the LTT phase.

Solid-State Nuclear Spin Quantum Computer Based on Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy

We propose a nuclear spin quantum computer based on magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM). It is shown that an MRFM single-electron spin measurement provides three essential requirements for quantum computation in solids: (a) preparation of the ground state, (b) one- and two- qubit quantum logic gates, and (c) a measurement of the final state. The proposed quantum computer can operate at temperatures up to 1K.

Magnetism of Stripe-Ordered La_(5/3)Sr_(1/3)NiO_4

^139La nuclear magnetic resonance studies reveal markedly different magnetic properties of the two sites created by the charged domain wall formation in La_(5/3)Sr_(1/3)NiO_4. NMR is slow compared to neutron scattering; we observe a 30 K suppression in magnetic ordering temperature indicating glassy behavior. Applied magnetic field reorients the in-plane ordered moments with respect to the lattice, but the relative orientation of the spins amongst themselves is stiff and broadly distributed.

Magnetic field independence of the spin gap in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}

We report, for magnetic fields of 0, 8.8, and 14.8 Tesla, measurements of the temperature dependent ^{63}Cu NMR spin lattice relaxation rate for near optimally doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, near and above T_c. In sharp contrast with previous work we find no magnetic field dependence. We discuss experimental issues arising in measurements of this required precision, and implications of the experiment regarding issues including the spin or pseudo gap.

Mobile anti-phase domains in lightly doped lanthanum cuprate

Light hole doping of lanthanum cuprate strongly suppresses the onset of antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Surprisingly, it simultaneously suppresses the extrapolated zero temperature sub-lattice magnetization. 139La NQR results in lightly Li-doped lanthanum cuprate have demonstrated that these effects are independent of the details of the mobility of the added holes. We propose a model in which doped holes phase separate into charged domain walls that surround ``anti-phase'' domains. These domains are mobile down to ~30 K where they either become pinned to the lattice or evaporate as their constituent holes become pinned to dopant impurities.

Ferromagnetic resonance force microscopy on microscopic cobalt single layer films

We report mechanical detection of ferromagnetic resonance signals from microscopic Co single layer thin films using a magnetic resonance force microscope (MRFM). Variations in the magnetic anisotropy field and the inhomogeneity of were clearly observed in the FMR spectra of microscopic Co thin films 500 and 1000 angstrom thick and 40 X 200 micron^2 in lateral extent. This demonstrates the important potential that MRFM detection of FMR holds for microscopic characterization of spatial distribution of magnetic properties in magnetic layered materials and devices.

Suppression of Antiferromagnetic Order by Light Hole Doping in La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4: A ^{139}La NQR Study

^{139}La nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements in lightly doped La_2Cu_{1-x}Li_xO_4 have been performed to reveal the dependence of the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic CuO_2 planes on the character of the doped holes and their interactions with the dopant. A detailed study shows that the magnetic properties are remarkably insensitive to the character of the dopant impurity. This indicates that the added holes form previously unrecognized collective structures.
