Double-weak-link interferometer of hard-core bosons in one dimension

We study the dynamics of a lattice hard-core boson gas released from a domain wall initial state in the presence of two weak links (defects). When the two defects are separated by a finite distance, the resulting density profile exhibits clear deviations from the standard Euler-scale hydrodynamic description of the gas, due to genuine quantum interference effects between the two defects. By analyzing the exact fermionic propagators, we show that repeated reflections at the defects give rise to interference fringes and coherent patterns that are beyond the reach of the (generalized) hydrodynamic description. We derive a closed analytic expression for the density profile during the expansion, explicitly highlighting the role played by these interference processes.

Quasicondensation and off-diagonal long-range order of hard-core bosons during a free expansion

Quasicondensation in one dimension is known to occur for equilibrium systems of hard-core bosons (HCBs) at zero temperature. This phenomenon arises due to the off-diagonal long-range order in the ground state, characterized by a power-law decay of the one-particle density matrix $g_1(x,y)\sim |x-y|^{-1/2}$, a well-known outcome of Luttinger liquid theory. Remarkably, HCBs, when allowed to freely expand from an initial product state (i.e., characterized by initial zero correlation), exhibit quasicondensation and demonstrate the emergence of off-diagonal long-range order during nonequilibrium dynamics. This phenomenon has been substantiated by numerical and experimental investigations in the early 2000s. In this work, we revisit the dynamical quasicondensation of HCBs, providing a fully analytical treatment of the issue. In particular, we derive an exact asymptotic formula for the equal-time one-particle density matrix by borrowing ideas from the framework of quantum Generalized Hydrodynamics. Our findings elucidate the phenomenology of quasicondensation and of dynamical fermionization occurring at different stages of the time evolution, as well as the crossover between the two.

Entanglement Hamiltonians of lattice models via the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem

The modular (or entanglement) Hamiltonian correspondent to the half-space-bipartition of a quantum state uniquely characterizes its entanglement properties. However, in the context of lattice models, its explicit form is analytically known only for the Ising chain and certain free theories in one-dimension. In this work, we provide a throughout investigation of entanglement Hamiltonians in lattice models obtained via the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem, which provides an explicit functional form for the entanglement Hamiltonian itself in quantum field theory. Our study encompasses a variety of one- and two-dimensional models, supporting diverse quantum phases and critical points, and, most importantly, scanning several universality classes, including Ising, Potts, and Luttinger liquids. We carry out extensive numerical simulations based on the density-matrix-renormalization-group method, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo. In particular, we compare the exact entanglement properties and correlation functions to those obtained applying the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem on the lattice. We carry out this comparison on both the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the entanglement Hamiltonian, and expectation values of correlation functions and order parameters. Our results evidence that, as long as the low-energy description of the lattice model is well-captured by a Lorentz-invariant quantum field theory, the Bisognano-Wichmann theorem provides a qualitatively and quantitatively accurate description of the lattice entanglement Hamiltonian. The resulting framework paves the way to direct studies of entanglement properties utilizing well-established statistical mechanics methods and experiments.

Real time confinement following a quantum quench to a non-integrable model

Light cone spreading of correlations and entanglement is a key feature of the non-equilibrium quench dynamics of many-body quantum systems. First proposed theoretically, it has been experimentally revealed in cold-atomic gases and it is expected to be a generic characteristic of any quench in systems with short-range interactions and no disorder. Conversely, here we propose a mechanism that, through confinement of the elementary excitations, strongly suppresses the light-cone spreading. Confinement is a celebrated concept in particle physics, but it also exists in condensed matter systems, most notably in one spatial dimension where it has been experimentally observed. Our results are obtained for the Ising spin chain with transverse and longitudinal magnetic field, but the proposed mechanism is of general validity since it is based on the sole concept of confinement and it should be easily observed in cold atom experiments.

Quantum Quench in the Transverse Field Ising chain I: Time evolution of order parameter correlators

We consider the time evolution of order parameter correlation functions after a sudden quantum quench of the magnetic field in the transverse field Ising chain. Using two novel methods based on determinants and form factor sums respectively, we derive analytic expressions for the asymptotic behaviour of one and two point correlators. We discuss quenches within the ordered and disordered phases as well as quenches between the phases and to the quantum critical point. We give detailed account of both methods.

Entanglement renormalization and boundary critical phenomena

The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz is applied to the study of boundary critical phenomena. We compute averages of local operators as a function of the distance from the boundary and the surface contribution to the ground state energy. Furthermore, assuming a uniform tensor structure, we show that the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz implies an exact relation between bulk and boundary critical exponents known to exist for boundary critical systems.

Dynamics of the attractive 1D Bose gas: analytical treatment from integrability

The physics of the attractive one-dimensional Bose gas (Lieb-Liniger model) is investigated with techniques based on the integrability of the system. Combining a knowledge of particle quasi-momenta to exponential precision in the system size with determinant representations of matrix elements of local operators coming from the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain rather general analytical results for the zero-temperature dynamical correlation functions of the density and field operators. Our results thus provide quantitative predictions for possible future experiments in atomic gases or optical waveguides.

Correlation functions of the one-dimensional attractive Bose gas

The zero-temperature correlation functions of the one-dimensional attractive Bose gas with delta-function interaction are calculated analytically for any value of the interaction parameter and number of particles, directly from the integrability of the model. We point out a number of interesting features, including zero recoil energy for large number of particles, analogous to a Mössbauer effect.

Dynamical density-density correlations in the one-dimensional Bose gas

The zero-temperature dynamical structure factor of the one-dimensional Bose gas with delta-function interaction (Lieb-Liniger model) is computed using a hybrid theoretical/numerical method based on the exact Bethe Ansatz solution, which allows to interpolate continuously between the weakly-coupled Thomas-Fermi and strongly-coupled Tonks-Girardeau regimes. The results should be experimentally accessible with Bragg spectroscopy.

Entanglement Entropy dynamics in Heisenberg chains

By means of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm we study the zero-temperature dynamics of the Von Neumann entropy of a block of spins in a Heisenberg chain after a sudden quench in the anisotropy parameter. In the absence of any disorder the block entropy increases linearly with time and then saturates. We analyze the velocity of propagation of the entanglement as a function of the initial and final anisotropies and compare, wherever possible, our results with those obtained by means of Conformal Field Theory. In the disordered case we find a slower (logarithmic) evolution which may signals the onset of entanglement localization.

Critical thermodynamics of two-dimensional N-vector cubic model in the five-loop approximation

The critical behavior of the two-dimensional N-vector cubic model is studied within the field-theoretical renormalization-group (RG) approach. The beta-functions and critical exponents are calculated in the five-loop approximation, RG series obtained are resummed using Pade-Borel-Leroy and conformal mapping techniques. It is found that for N = 2 the continuous line of fixed points is well reproduced by the resummed RG series and an account for the five-loop terms makes the lines of zeros of both beta-functions closer to each another. For N > 2 the five-loop contributions are shown to shift the cubic fixed point, given by the four-loop approximation, towards the Ising fixed point. This confirms the idea that the existence of the cubic fixed point in two dimensions under N > 2 is an artifact of the perturbative analysis. In the case N = 0 the results obtained are compatible with the conclusion that the impure critical behavior is controlled by the Ising fixed point.

Critical behavior of two-dimensional cubic and MN models in the five-loop renormalization-group approximation

The critical thermodynamics of the two-dimensional N-vector cubic and MN models is studied within the field-theoretical renormalization-group (RG) approach. The beta functions and critical exponents are calculated in the five-loop approximation and the RG series obtained are resummed using the Borel-Leroy transformation combined with the generalized Padé approximant and conformal mapping techniques. For the cubic model, the RG flows for various N are investigated. For N=2 it is found that the continuous line of fixed points running from the XY fixed point to the Ising one is well reproduced by the resummed RG series and an account for the five-loop terms makes the lines of zeros of both beta functions closer to each another. For the cubic model with N\geq 3, the five-loop contributions are shown to shift the cubic fixed point, given by the four-loop approximation, towards the Ising fixed point. This confirms the idea that the existence of the cubic fixed point in two dimensions under N>2 is an artifact of the perturbative analysis. For the quenched dilute O(M) models ($MN$ models with N=0) the results are compatible with a stable pure fixed point for M\geq1. For the MN model with M,N\geq2 all the non-perturbative results are reproduced. In addition a new stable fixed point is found for moderate values of M and N.

Critical equation of state of randomly dilute Ising systems

We determine the critical equation of state of three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising systems, i.e. of the random-exchange Ising universality class. We first consider the small-magnetization expansion of the Helmholtz free energy in the high-temperature phase. Then, we apply a systematic approximation scheme of the equation of state in the whole critical regime, that is based on polynomial parametric representations matching the small-magnetization of the Helmholtz free energy and satisfying a global stationarity condition. These results allow us to estimate several universal amplitude ratios, such as the ratio A^+/A^- of the specific-heat amplitudes. Our best estimate A^+/A^-=1.6(3) is in good agreement with experimental results on dilute uniaxial antiferromagnets.

The three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising model: Monte Carlo results

We perform a high-statistics simulation of the three-dimensional randomly dilute Ising model on cubic lattices $L^3$ with $L\le 256$. We choose a particular value of the density, x=0.8, for which the leading scaling corrections are suppressed. We determine the critical exponents, obtaining $ν= 0.683(3)$, $η= 0.035(2)$, $β= 0.3535(17)$, and $α= -0.049(9)$, in agreement with previous numerical simulations. We also estimate numerically the fixed-point values of the four-point zero-momentum couplings that are used in field-theoretical fixed-dimension studies. Although these results somewhat differ from those obtained using perturbative field theory, the field-theoretical estimates of the critical exponents do not change significantly if the Monte Carlo result for the fixed point is used. Finally, we determine the six-point zero-momentum couplings, relevant for the small-magnetization expansion of the equation of state, and the invariant amplitude ratio $R^+_ξ$ that expresses the universality of the free-energy density per correlation volume. We find $R^+_ξ= 0.2885(15)$.

Critical thermodynamics of three-dimensional chiral model for N > 3

The critical behavior of the three-dimensional $N$-vector chiral model is studied for arbitrary $N$. The known six-loop renormalization-group (RG) expansions are resummed using the Borel transformation combined with the conformal mapping and Padé approximant techniques. Analyzing the fixed point location and the structure of RG flows, it is found that two marginal values of $N$ exist which separate domains of continuous chiral phase transitions $N > N_{c1}$ and $N < N_{c2}$ from the region $N_{c1} > N > N_{c2}$ where such transitions are first-order. Our calculations yield $N_{c1} = 6.4(4)$ and $N_{c2} = 5.7(3)$. For $N > N_{c1}$ the structure of RG flows is identical to that given by the $ε$ and 1/N expansions with the chiral fixed point being a stable node. For $N < N_{c2}$ the chiral fixed point turns out to be a focus having no generic relation to the stable fixed point seen at small $ε$ and large $N$. In this domain, containing the physical values $N = 2$ and $N = 3$, phase trajectories approach the fixed point in a spiral-like manner giving rise to unusual crossover regimes which may imitate varying (scattered) critical exponents seen in numerous physical and computer experiments.

Dynamic structure factor of the Ising model with purely relaxational dynamics

We compute the dynamic structure factor for the Ising model with a purely relaxational dynamics (model A). We perform a perturbative calculation in the $ε$ expansion, at two loops in the high-temperature phase and at one loop in the temperature magnetic-field plane, and a Monte Carlo simulation in the high-temperature phase. We find that the dynamic structure factor is very well approximated by its mean-field Gaussian form up to moderately large values of the frequency $ω$ and momentum $k$. In the region we can investigate, $kξ\lesssim 5$, $ωτ\lesssim 10$, where $ξ$ is the correlation length and $τ$ the zero-momentum autocorrelation time, deviations are at most of a few percent.

Chiral critical behavior in two dimensions from five-loop renormalization-group expansions

We analyse the critical behavior of two-dimensional N-vector spin systems with noncollinear order within the five-loop renormalization-group approximation. The structure of the RG flow is studied for different N leading to the conclusion that the chiral fixed point governing the critical behavior of physical systems with N = 2 and N = 3 does not coincide with that given by the 1/N expansion. We show that the stable chiral fixed point for $N \le N^*$, including N = 2 and N = 3, turns out to be a focus. We give a complete characterization of the critical behavior controlled by this fixed point, also evaluating the subleading crossover exponents. The spiral-like approach of the chiral fixed point is argued to give rise to unusual crossover and near-critical regimes that may imitate varying critical exponents seen in numerous physical and computer experiments.

Chiral phase transitions: focus driven critical behavior in systems with planar and vector ordering

The fixed point that governs the critical behavior of magnets described by the $N$-vector chiral model under the physical values of $N$ ($N =2, 3$) is shown to be a stable focus both in two and three dimensions. Robust evidence in favor of this conclusion is obtained within the five-loop and six-loop renormalization-group analysis in fixed dimension. The spiral-like approach of the chiral fixed point results in unusual crossover and near-critical regimes that may imitate varying critical exponents seen in physical and computer experiments.
