Collective excitations of a trapped boson-fermion mixture across demixing

We calculate the spectrum of low-lying collective excitations in a mesoscopic cloud formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate and a spin-polarized Fermi gas as a function of the boson-fermion repulsions. The cloud is under isotropic harmonic confinement and its dynamics is treated in the collisional regime by using the equations of generalized hydrodynamics with inclusion of surface effects. For large numbers of bosons we find that, as the cloud moves towards spatial separation (demixing) with increasing boson-fermion coupling, the frequencies of a set of collective modes show a softening followed by a sharp upturn. This behavior permits a clear identification of the quantum phase transition. We propose a physical interpretation for the dynamical transition point in a confined mixture, leading to a simple analytical expression for its location.

Interaction-driven effects on two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the role of the interparticle-interaction strength in the distribution of two species of atoms inside a condensate. We focus upon the study of systems for which the minima of the trapping potentials for the species are displaced from each other by a distance that is small compared to the size of the total condensate. We show that in a small range of the interparticle-interaction strength the distribution of species undergoes dramatic changes, and exhibits a variety of different features. We demonstrate that this behavior can be easily understood in terms of the Thomas-Fermi approximation. This effect may be useful in experimentally determining the values of the scattering lengths.

Structure of vortices in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We develop a three-dimensional analysis of the phase separation of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of vorticity within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We find different segregation features according to whether the more repulsive component is in a vortex or in a vortex-free state. An application of this study is aimed at describing systems formed by two almost immiscible species of rubidium-87 that are commonly used in Bose-Einstein condensation experiments. In particular, in this work we calculate the density profiles of condensates for the same conditions as the states prepared in the experiments performed at JILA [Matthews et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 2498 (1999)]

Zero sound density oscillations in Fermi-Bose mixtures

Within a mean field plus Random-Phase Approximation formalism, we investigate the collective excitations of a three component Fermi-Bose mixture of K atoms, magnetically trapped and subjected to repulsive s-wave interactions. We analyze both the single-particle excitation and the density oscillation spectra created by external multipolar fields, for varying fermion concentrations. The formalism and the numerical output are consistent with the Generalized Kohn Theorem for the whole multispecies system. The calculations give rise to fragmented density excitation spectra of the fermion sample and illustrate the role of the mutual interaction in the observed deviations of the bosonic spectra with respect to Stringari's rule.

Collisionless collective modes of fermions in magnetic traps

We present a Random-Phase-Approximation formalism for the collective spectrum of two hyperfine species of dilute 40K atoms, magnetically trapped at zero temperature and subjected to a repulsive s-wave interaction between atoms with different spin projections. We examine the density-like and the spin-like oscillation spectra, as well as the transition density profiles created by external multipolar fields. The zero sound spectrum is always fragmented and the density and spin channels become clearly distinguishable if the trapping potentials acting on the species are identical. Although this distinction is lost when these confining fields are different, at selected excitation frequencies the transition densities may display the signature of the channel.

Barrier effects on the collective excitations of split Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the collective excitations of a single-species Bose gas at T=0 in a harmonic trap where the confinement undergoes some splitting along one spatial direction. We mostly consider onedimensional potentials consisting of two harmonic wells separated a distance 2 z_0, since they essentially contain all the barrier effects that one may visualize in the 3D situation. We find, within a hydrodynamic approximation, that regardless the dimensionality of the system, pairs of levels in the excitation spectrum, corresponding to neighbouring even and odd excitations, merge together as one increases the barrier height up to the current value of the chemical potential. The excitation spectra computed in the hydrodynamical or Thomas-Fermi limit are compared with the results of exactly solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We analyze as well the characteristics of the spatial pattern of excitations of threedimensional boson systems according to the amount of splitting of the condensate.

Bose-Einstein condensation in harmonic double wells

We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation in harmonic traps where the confinement has undergone a splitting along one direction. We mostly consider the 3D potentials consisting of two cylindrical wells separated a distance 2a along the z-axis. For ideal gases, the thermodynamics of the confined bosons has been investigated performing exact numerical summations to describe the major details of the transition and comparing the results with the semiclassical density-of-states approximation. We find that for large particle number and increasing well separation, the condensation temperature evolves from the thermodynamic limit value T_c^{(0)}(N) to T_c^{(0)}(N/2). The effects of adding a repulsive interaction between atoms has been examined resorting to the Gross-Pitaevskii-Popov procedure and it is found that the shift of the condensation temperature exhibits different signs according to the separation between wells. In particular, for sufficiently large splitting, the trend opposes the well known results for harmonic traps, since the critical temperature appears to increase with growing repulsion strength.
