Ultracompact integrated polarizers using bent asymmetric coupled waveguides

A new type of integrated polarizer based on bent coupled optical waveguides is proposed. The simplicity of the device geometry permits its realization using only basic standard fabrication steps. A deep etched waveguide silicon nitride TE-pass implementation has been studied using a full vector 3D mode solver and beam propagation techniques. The characteristics of the underlying physical mechanism bring in flexibility to the design of broadband devices robust against fabrication tolerances. The possibility of incorporating almost design-transparent polarizers in photonic integrated circuits is also discussed.

Nonlinear Bloch modes, optical switching and Bragg solitons in tightly coupled micro-ring resonator chains

We study nonlinear wave phenomena in coupled ring resonator optical waveguides in the tight coupling regime. A discrete model for the system dynamics is put forward and its steady state nonlinear Bloch modes are derived. The switching behavior of the transmission system is addressed numerically and the results are explained in the light of this analytical result. We also present a numerical study on the spontaneous generation of Bragg solitons from a continuous-wave input.

A simple method for estimating the fractal dimension from digital images: The compression dimension

The fractal structure of real world objects is often analyzed using digital images. In this context, the compression fractal dimension is put forward. It provides a simple method for the direct estimation of the dimension of fractals stored as digital image files. The computational scheme can be implemented using readily available free software. Its simplicity also makes it very interesting for introductory elaborations of basic concepts of fractal geometry, complexity, and information theory. A test of the computational scheme using limited-quality images of well-defined fractal sets obtained from the Internet and free software has been performed. Also, a systematic evaluation of the proposed method using computer generated images of the Weierstrass cosine function shows an accuracy comparable to those of the methods most commonly used to estimate the dimension of fractal data sequences applied to the same test problem.

Study of the terahertz spectra of crystalline materials using NDDO semi-empirical methods: polyethylene, poly(vinylidene fluoride) form II and $α$-D-glucose

Semi-empirical quantum chemistry methods offer a very interesting compromise between accuracy and computational load. In order to assess the performance of NDDO methods in the interpretation of terahertz spectra, the low frequency vibration modes of three crystalline materials, namely, polyethylene, poly(vinylidene fluoride) form II and $α$-D-glucose have been studied using the PM6 and PM7 Hamiltonians and the results have been compared with the experimental data and former calculations. The results show good qualitative or semi-quantitative agreement with the experimentally observed terahertz spectra.

Simple quantum password checking

We present a quantum password checking protocol where secrecy is protected by the laws of quantum mechanics. The passwords are encoded in quantum systems that can be compared but have a dimension too small to allow reading the encoded bits. We study the protocol under different replay attacks and show it is robust even for poorly chosen passwords.

Fast and slow light in zig-zag microring resonator chains

We analyze fast and slow light transmission in a zig-zag microring resonator chain. This novel device permits the operation in both regimes. In the superluminal case, a new ubiquitous light transmission effect is found whereby the input optical pulse is reproduced in an almost simultaneous manner at the various system outputs. When the input carrier is tuned to a different frequency, the system permits to slow down the propagating optical signal. Between these two extreme cases, the relative delay can be tuned within a broad range.

A common model for superluminal propagation in absorbing atomic media and lossy metastructures

We analyse the superluminal propagation of narrow-band pulses at resonances in dissipative media. The output waveform is an attenuated, undistorted, time-advanced version of the input which can be interpreted as the result of the interference of two scaled replicas of the input having a positive relative delay. The proposed analysis applies both to the propagation in a passive bulk medium at an electronic resonance and in a dielectric waveguide coupled to a lossy micro-ring resonator. This latter case provides a clear insight of the underlying physical phenomena.
