An Experimentally Realizable Weiss Model for Disorder-Free Glassiness

We summarize recent work on a frustrated periodic long-range Josephson array in a parameter regime where its dynamical behavior is identical to that of the $p=4$ disordered spherical model. We also discuss the physical requirements imposed by the theory on the experimental realization of this superconducting network.

Glassy Behavior in the Ferromagnetic Ising Model on a Cayley Tree

We present a detailed study of the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic Ising model on a Cayley tree. In the limit of zero field, the system displays glassy behavior below a crossover temperature, $T_g$, that scales inversely with the logarithm of the number of generations; thus $T_g$ is inversely proportional to the logarithm of the logarithm of the number of sites. Non-Gaussian magnetization distributions are observed for $T < T_g$, reminiscent of that associated with the central spin of the Edwards-Anderson model on the same tree; furthermore a dynamical study indicates metastability, long relaxation times and ageing consistent with the development of glassy behavior for a finite but macroscopic number of sites.

Glass Formation in a Periodic Long-Range Josephson Array

We present an analytic study of a dynamical instability in a periodic long-range Josephson array frustrated by a weak transverse field. This glass transition is characterized by a diverging relaxation time and a jump in the Edwards-Anderson order parameter; it is {\sl not} accompanied by a coinciding static transition.

Possible Glassiness in a Periodic Long-Range Josephson Array

We present an analytic study of a periodic Josephson array with long-range interactions in a transverse magnetic field. We find that this system exhibits a first-order transition into a phase characterized by an extensive number of states separated by barriers that scale with the system size; the associated discontinuity is small in the limit of weak applied field, thus permitting an explicit analysis in this regime.

Nonlinear Susceptibility: A Direct Test of the Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in UBe(13)

We present the nonlinear susceptibility as a direct test of the quadrupolar Kondo scenario for heavy fermion behavior, and apply it to the case of cubic crystal-field symmetry. Within a single-ion model we compute the nonlinear susceptibility resulting from low-lying Γ_3 (5f^2 and Kramers (5f^3) doublets. We find that nonlinear susceptibility measurements on single-crystal UBe_{13} are inconsistent with a quadrupolar 5f^2 ground-state of the uranium ion; the experimental data indicate that the low-lying magnetic excitations of UBe_{13} are predominantly dipolar in character.

Finite-Temperature Transition into a Power-Law Spin Phase with an Extensive Zero-Point Entropy

We introduce an $xy$ generalization of the frustrated Ising model on a triangular lattice. The presence of continuous degrees of freedom stabilizes a {\em finite-temperature} spin state with {\em power-law} discrete spin correlations and an extensive zero-point entropy. In this phase, the unquenched degrees of freedom can be described by a fluctuating surface with logarithmic height correlations. Finite-size Monte Carlo simulations have been used to characterize the exponents of the transition and the dynamics of the low-temperature phase.
