Summary of the SUSY Working Group of the 1999 Les Houches Workshop

The results obtained by the Working Group on Supersymmetry at the 1999 Les Houches Workshop on Collider Physics are summarized. Separate chapters treat "general" supersymmetry, R-parity violation, gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking, and anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking.

Single top production at the LHC as a probe of R parity violation

We investigate the potential of the LHC to probe the R parity violating couplings involving the third generation by considering single top production. This study is based on particle level event generation for both signal and background, interfaced to a simplified simulation of the ATLAS detector.

Glue constraining asymmetries in W, $γ$ or Z production at CERN LHC

We propose a class of forward-backward asymmetries with respect to the subprocess c.m. scattering angle in $V$+jet production at hadron colliders, with V being any of (W, Z, $γ$, H), which are directly proportional to the gluon distribution $g(x)$. The informations that these asymmetries can provide are complementary of those reachable from measurements of the transverse momentum and/or the rapidity distributions of a $V$ in kinematical regimes where gluon scattering subprocesses dominate. The accuracy which can be reached in the W, Z and $γ$ cases, at the upgraded Tevatron and at LHC, should allow a considerable improvement of our knowledge of the gluon distribution function, especially at large x.

Manifestation of a strong electroweak sector with decoupling at hadronic colliders

We study the expected phenomenology at present (Tevatron) and future (Tevatron Upgrade, LHC) hadronic colliders of a model describing a strong electroweak symmetry breaking sector with both vector and axial vector strong interacting bosons degenerate in mass. Due to decoupling, this model at low energies is almost indistinguishable from the Standard Model, passing therefore all low energy precision tests at LEPI. We will show that it gives quite visible signals at forthcoming hadronic accelerators. The new charged vector bosons can be detected more easily than the neutral ones.

HERA prospects on Compositeness and New Vector Bosons

The absence of deviations from the Standard Model for the differential cross section ${dσ}/{dQ^2}$ at HERA is used to set limits on electron quark compositeness scale and on new vector bosons, especially the hadrophilic one recently introduced as a possible explanation for LEP/SLC and CDF anomalies.

Theoretical overview on Diboson production

Precise measurements of weak vector bosons self couplings give a hint on the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. We first stress that present data from LEP and TEVATRON clearly indicate that weak bosons are self interacting. We then review the limits on the trilinear and quadrilinear couplings expected at LEP2, $e^+e^-$ linear colliders and LHC.

Z' Physics

The limits on extra neutral gauge bosons, which could be reached at LEP2, are reviewed. Exclusion and discovery limits are discussed for f\bar f and WW production.

Anomalous $Z'$ effects in the WW channel at $LC 2000$

We consider the virtual signals of a $Z'$ of very general type in the process $e^+e^-\to W^+W^-$ at a future linear $e^+e^-$ collider of 2000 GeV c.m. energy ($LC2000$). We show that possible deviations from the SM predictions in this channel are related to similar deviations in the purely leptonic one in a way that is only characteristic of this $Z'$ model, and not in general of possible competitor models with anomalous gauge couplings.

Hadrophilic Z':a bridge from LEP1, SLC and CDF to LEP2 anomalies

In order to explain possible departures from the Standard Model predictions for $b\bar b$ and $c\bar c$ production at $Z$ peak, we propose the existence of a $Z'$ vector boson with enhanced couplings to quarks. We first show that this proposal is perfectly consistent with the full set of LEP1/SLC results. In particular, $Z-Z'$ mixing effects naturally explain the fact that $Γ_b$ and $Γ_c$ deviate from the SM in opposite directions. We then show that there is a predicted range for enhanced $Z'q\bar q$ couplings which explains, for a precise and interesting range of $Z'$ masses, the excess of dijet events seen at CDF. A $Z'$ with such couplings and mass would produce clean observable effects in $b\bar b$ and in total hadronic production at LEP2.

Improved version of the eikonal model for absorbing spherical particles

We present a new expression of the scattering amplitude, valid for spherical absorbing objects, which leads to an improved version of the eikonal method outside the diffraction region. Limitations of this method are discussed and numerical results are presented and compared successfully with the Mie theory.

Top Quark Production in Extended Bess Model

We study top production at Tevatron collider in the extended BESS model, which is an effective lagrangian parametrization of a dynamical symmetry breaking of the electroweak symmetry. The existence of a colored octet of gauge vector bosons can increase top production at a rate still consistent with recent experimental data and lead to distorsions in the transverse momentum spectrum of the top.

Some Results on the BESS Model at Future Colliders

We present some results on the usefulness of upgraded Tevatron, LHC proton proton collider and linear e+e- colliders in the TeV range to test the idea of a strongly interacting sector as responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking. The calculations are performed within an effective lagrangian description, called the BESS model, which provides for a rather general frame based on the standing point of custodial symmetry and gauge invariance, without specifying any dynamical scheme.

Pseudo Goldstones at Future Colliders from the Extended Bess Model

We consider the production of the lightest pseudo-Goldstone bosons at future colliders through the vector resonances predicted by the extended BESS model, which consists of an effective lagrangian parametrization with dynamical symmetry breaking, describing scalar, vector and axial-vector bound states in a rather general framework. We find that the detection of pseudo-Goldstone pairs at LHC requires a careful evaluation of backgrounds. For e+e- collisions in the TeV range the backgrounds can be easily reduced and the detection of pseudo-Goldstone pairs is generally easier.

Higgs Search by Neural Networks at LHC

We show that neural network classifiers can be used to discriminate Higgs production from background at LHC for $ 150< M_H<200$ GeV. The results compare favourably with ordinary multivariate analysis.

The Bess Model at e+ e- Colliders

We consider the possibility of detecting vector resonances from a strong electroweak sector, in the framework of the BESS model, at future $e^+ e^-$ colliders up to the TeV range. If the mass $M_V$ of the new vector boson multiplet is not far above or if it is below the maximum machine energy, such a contribution would be manifest. The process of $W$-pair production by $e^+e^-$ annihilation allows for sensitive tests of the strong sector, especially if the $W$ polarizations are reconstructed.
