Ultrasound attenuation in gap-anisotropic systems

Transverse ultrasound attenuation provides a weakly-coupled probe of momentum current correlations in electronic systems. We develop a simple theory for the interpretation of transverse ultrasound attenuation coefficients in systems with nodal gap anisotropy. Applying this theory we show how ultrasound can delineate between extended-s and d-wave scenarios for the cuprate superconductors.

Simple description of the anisotropic two-channel Kondo problem

We adapt strong-coupling methods first used in the one-channel Kondo model to develop a simple description of the spin-$1\over 2$ two-channel Kondo model with channel anisotropy. Our method exploits spin-charge decoupling to develop a compactified Hamiltonian that describes the spin excitations. The structure of the fixed-point Hamiltonian and quasiparticle impurity S-matrix are incompatible with a Fermi liquid description.

Pedestrian Approach to the Two-Channel Kondo Model

We reformulate the two-channel Kondo model to explicitly remove the unscattered charge degrees of freedom. This procedure permits us to move the non-Fermi liquid fixed point to infinite coupling where we can apply a perturbative strong-coupling expansion. The fixed point Hamiltonian involves a three-body Majorana zero mode whose scattering effects give rise to marginal self-energies. The compactified model is the N=3 member of a family of "O(N)" Kondo models that can be solved by semiclassical methods in the large $N$ limit. For odd $N$, {\em fermionic} "Kink" fluctuations about the $N=\infty$ mean-field theory generate a fermionic $N$-body bound-state which asymptotically decouples at low energies. For N=3, our semi-classical methods fully recover the non-Fermi liquid physics of the original two channel model. Using the same methods, we find that the corresponding O(3) Kondo lattice model develops a spin-gap and a gapless band of coherently propagating three-body bound-states. Its strong-coupling limit offers a rather interesting realization of marginal Fermi liquid behavior.

Questions and Issues Arising at SCES '94 Theory

I summarize some of the key questions to have emerged during the 1994 conference on ``Strongly Correlated Electron Systems'', held in Amsterdam, August 1994. Issues addressed include: Hunds rule interactions and how they renormalize; the Luttinger sum rule and metamagnetism; heavy fermion insulators, the nature of the charge gap, spectral weight transfer in the optical conductivity; non-Fermi liquid behavior in transition and heavy fermion metals; order parameter symmetry and the unusual nature of quasiparticle excitations in heavy fermion superconductors.

Three Body bound-states and the development of odd frequency pairing

We propose that the development of odd-frequency superconductivity is driven by the collective formation of neutral three body bound-states. Using a three-body bound-state ansatz we develop a mean-field theory for odd-frequency pairing within the Kondo Lattice model. Three body bound-state formation leads to the formation of a gapless band of fermions with a neutral, spinless Fermi surface. We discuss the low energy excitations of these modes, suggesting them as a possible explanation for the absence of anisotropy in the thermal conductivity of heavy fermion superconductors.

Nonlinear Susceptibility: A Direct Test of the Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in UBe(13)

We present the nonlinear susceptibility as a direct test of the quadrupolar Kondo scenario for heavy fermion behavior, and apply it to the case of cubic crystal-field symmetry. Within a single-ion model we compute the nonlinear susceptibility resulting from low-lying Γ_3 (5f^2 and Kramers (5f^3) doublets. We find that nonlinear susceptibility measurements on single-crystal UBe_{13} are inconsistent with a quadrupolar 5f^2 ground-state of the uranium ion; the experimental data indicate that the low-lying magnetic excitations of UBe_{13} are predominantly dipolar in character.

Finite-Temperature Transition into a Power-Law Spin Phase with an Extensive Zero-Point Entropy

We introduce an $xy$ generalization of the frustrated Ising model on a triangular lattice. The presence of continuous degrees of freedom stabilizes a {\em finite-temperature} spin state with {\em power-law} discrete spin correlations and an extensive zero-point entropy. In this phase, the unquenched degrees of freedom can be described by a fluctuating surface with logarithmic height correlations. Finite-size Monte Carlo simulations have been used to characterize the exponents of the transition and the dynamics of the low-temperature phase.

Spectrum and Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with $1/r^2$ exchange and hopping

We derive the spectrum and the thermodynamics of the one-dimensional supersymmetric t-J model with long range hopping and spin exchange using a set of maximal-spin eigenstates. This spectrum confirms the recent conjecture that the asymptotic Bethe-ansatz spectrum is exact. By empirical determining the spinon degeneracies of each state, we are able to explicitly construct the free energy.

Instabilities of the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance

We consider the possibility that instabilities of the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance lead to new fixed point behavior of the Kondo effect in a lattice environment. In one scenario, a pairing component to the resonant scattering develops in the Kondo lattice, leading to an odd frequency superconductor. We discuss experiments that can discriminate between this picture and d-wave pairing, and its relationship to the non Fermi liquid fixed point of the overscreened Kondo model.

Odd Frequency Pairing in the Kondo Lattice

We discuss the possibility that heavy fermion superconductors involve odd-frequency pairing of the kind first considered by Berezinskii. Using a toy model for odd frequency triplet pairing in the Kondo lattice we are able to examine key properties of this new type of paired state. To make progress treating the strong $n_f=1$ constraint in the Kondo lattice model we use the technical trick of a Majorana representation of the local moments, which permits variational treatments of the model without a Gutzwiller approximation. The simplest mean field theory involves the development of bound states between the local moments and conduction electrons, characterized by a spinor order parameter. We show that this state is a stable realization of odd frequency triplet superconductivity with surfaces of gapless excitations whose spin and charge coherence factors vanish linearly in the quasiparticle energy. A $T^3$ NMR relaxation rate coexists with a linear specific heat. We discuss possible extensions of our toy model to describe heavy fermion superconductivity.

Possible Realization of Odd Frequency Pairing in Heavy Fermion Compounds

Using Majorana Fermions to represent spins we re-examine the Kondo Lattice model for heavy fermions. The simplest decoupling procedure provides a realization of odd frequency superconductivity, with resonant pairing and surfaces of gap zeros. Spin and charge coherence factors vanish linearly with the energy on the Fermi surface, predicting a linear specific heat, but a $T^3$ NMR relaxation rate. Possible application to heavy fermions is suggested.
