Event Structure and Double Helicity Asymmetry in Jet Production from Polarized p+p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV

We report on event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($A_LL$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured at midrapidity $|η| < 0.35$ with the requirement of a high-momentum ($>2$ GeV/$c$) photon in each event. Measured event structure is compared with {\sc pythia} and {\sc geant} simulations. The shape of jets and the underlying event were well reproduced at this collision energy. For the measurement of jet $A_{LL}$, photons and charged particles were clustered with a seed-cone algorithm to obtain the cluster $p_T$ sum ($p_T^{\rm reco}$). The effect of detector response and the underlying events on $p_T^{\rm reco}$ was evaluated with the simulation. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the NLO pQCD jet production cross section. For $4 < p_T^{\rm reco} < 12$ GeV/$c$ with an average beam polarization of $< P > = 49%$ we measured $A_{LL} = -0.0014 \pm 0.0037^{\rm stat}$ at the lowest $p_T^{\rm reco}$ bin (4-5 GeV/$c$) and $-0.0181 \pm 0.0282^{\rm stat}$ at the highest $p_T^{\rm reco}$ bin (10-12 GeV/$c$) with a beam polarization scale error of 9.4% and a $\pT$ scale error of 10%. Jets in the measured $p_T^{\rm reco}$ range arise primarily from hard-scattered gluons with momentum fraction $0.02 < x < 0.3$ according to {\sc pythia}. The measured $A_{LL}$ is compared with predictions that assume various $ΔG(x)$ distributions based on the GRSV parameterization. The present result imposes the limit $-1.1 < \int_{0.02}^{0.3}dx ΔG(x, μ^2 = 1 {\rm GeV}^2) < 0.4$ at 95% confidence level or $\int_{0.02}^{0.3}dx ΔG(x, μ^2 = 1 {\rm GeV}^2) < 0.5$ at 99% confidence level.

High p_T Direct Photon and pi^0 Triggered Azimuthal Jet Correlations in sqrt(s)=200 GeV p+p Collisions

Correlations of charged hadrons of 1 < pT < 10 GeV/c with high pT direct photons and pi^ 0 mesons in the range 5 <pT < 15 GeV/c are used to study jet fragmentation in the photon+jet and di-jet channels, respectively. The magnitude of the partonic transverse momentum, kT, is obtained by comparing to a model incorporating a Gaussian kT smearing. The sensitivity of the associated charged hadron spectra to the underlying fragmentation function is tested and the data are compared to calculations using recent global fit results. The shape of the direct photon-associated hadron spectrum as well as its charge asymmetry are found to be consistent with a sample dominated by quark-gluon Compton scattering. No significant evidence of fragmentation photon correlated production is observed within experimental uncertainties.

Transverse momentum dependence of eta meson suppression in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

New measurements by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC for eta production at midrapidity as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality in sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions are presented. They indicate nuclear modification factors (R_AA) that are similar both in magnitude and trend to those found in earlier pi^0 measurements. Linear fits to R_AA in the 5--20 GeV/c p_T region show that the slope is consistent with zero within two standard deviations at all centralities although a slow rise cannot be excluded. Having different statistical and systematic uncertainties the pi^0 and eta measurements are complementary at high p_T; thus, along with the extended p_T range of these data they can provide additional constraints for theoretical modeling and the extraction of transport properties.

Elliptic and hexadecapole flow of charged hadrons in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Differential measurements of the elliptic (v_2) and hexadecapole (v_4) Fourier flow coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality or the number of participant nucleons (N_part) for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The v_{2,4} measurements at pseudorapidity |η|<=0.35 obtained with four separate reaction plane detectors positioned in the range 1.0<|η|<3.9 show good agreement, indicating the absence of significant η-dependent nonflow perturbations. Sizable values for v_4(p_T) are observed with a ratio v_4(p_T,N_part)/v_2^2(p_T,N_part)~0.8 for 50 200 this ratio increases up to 1.7 in the most central collisions.

Measurement of neutral mesons in p+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV and scaling properties of hadron production

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of K^0_S , ω, ηprime, and ϕmesons in p + p collisions at = 200 GeV. Measurements ωand ϕproduction in different decay channels give consistent results. New results for the ϕare in agreement with previously published data and extend the measured pT coverage. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions measured by PHENIX are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, n and T, determining the high-pT and characterizing the low-pT regions of the spectra, respectively. The values of these parameters are very similar for all analyzed meson spectra, but with a lower parameter T extracted for protons. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Heavy Quark Production in p+p and Energy Loss and Flow of Heavy Quarks in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV

Transverse momentum (p^e_T) spectra of electrons from semileptonic weak decays of heavy flavor mesons in the range of 0.3 < p^e_T < 9.0 GeV/c have been measured at mid-rapidity (|eta| < 0.35) by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. The nuclear modification factor R_AA with respect to p+p collisions indicates substantial energy loss of heavy quarks in the produced medium. In addition, the azimuthal anisotropy parameter v_2 has been measured for 0.3 < p^e_T < 5.0 GeV/c in Au+Au collisions. Comparisons of R_AA and v_2 are made to various model calculations.

Nuclear modification factors of phi mesons in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R_AA for Au+Au and Cu+Cu, and R_dA for d+Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1<p_T<7 GeV/c) and centrality. In central and mid-central Au+Au collisions, the R_AA of phi exhibits a suppression relative to expectations from binary scaled p+p results. The amount of suppression is smaller than that of the neutral pion and the eta meson in the intermediate p_T range (2--5 GeV/c); whereas at higher p_T the phi, pi^0, and eta show similar suppression. The baryon (protons and anti-protons) excess observed in central Au+Au collisions at intermediate p_T is not observed for the phi meson despite the similar mass of the proton and the phi. This suggests that the excess is linked to the number of constituent quarks rather than the hadron mass. The difference gradually disappears with decreasing centrality and for peripheral collisions the R_AA values for both particles are consistent with binary scaling. Cu+Cu collisions show the same yield and suppression as Au+Au collisions for the same number of N_part. The R_dA of phi shows no evidence for cold nuclear effects within uncertainties.

Trends in Yield and Azimuthal Shape Modification in Dihadron Correlations in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Fast parton probes produced by hard scattering and embedded within collisions of large nuclei have shown that partons suffer large energy loss and that the produced medium may respond collectively to the lost energy. We present measurements of neutral pion trigger particles at transverse momenta p^t_T = 4-12 GeV/c and associated charged hadrons (p^a_T = 0.5-7 GeV/c) as a function of relative azimuthal angle Delta Phi at midrapidity in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. These data lead to two major observations. First, the relative angular distribution of low momentum hadrons, whose shape modification has been interpreted as a medium response to parton energy loss, is found to be modified only for p^t_T < 7 GeV/c. At higher p^t_T, the data are consistent with unmodified or very weakly modified shapes, even for the lowest measured p^a_T. This observation presents a quantitative challenge to medium response scenarios. Second, the associated yield of hadrons opposite to the trigger particle in Au+Au relative to that in p+p (I_AA) is found to be suppressed at large momentum (IAA ~ 0.35-0.5), but less than the single particle nuclear modification factor (R_AA ~0.2).

Energy conservation and Onsager's conjecture for the Euler equations

Onsager conjectured that weak solutions of the Euler equations for incompressible fluids in 3D conserve energy only if they have a certain minimal smoothness, (of order of 1/3 fractional derivatives) and that they dissipate energy if they are rougher. In this paper we prove that energy is conserved for velocities in the function space $B^{1/3}_{3,c(\NN)}$. We show that this space is sharp in a natural sense. We phrase the energy spectrum in terms of the Littlewood-Paley decomposition and show that the energy flux is controlled by local interactions. This locality is shown to hold also for the helicity flux; moreover, every weak solution of the Euler equations that belongs to $B^{2/3}_{3,c(\NN)}$ conserves helicity. In contrast, in two dimensions, the strong locality of the enstrophy holds only in the ultraviolet range.

Inviscid limit for damped and driven incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in ${{\mathbb R}^2}$

We consider the zero viscosity limit of long time averages of solutions of damped and driven Navier-Stokes equations in ${\mathbb R}^2$. We prove that the rate of dissipation of enstrophy vanishes. Stationary statistical solutions of the damped and driven Navier-Stokes equations converge to renormalized stationary statistical solutions of the damped and driven Euler equations. These solutions obey the enstrophy balance.

Diffusion and Mixing in Fluid Flow

We study enhancement of diffusive mixing on a compact Riemannian manifold by a fast incompressible flow. Our main result is a sharp description of the class of flows that make the deviation of the solution from its average arbitrarily small in an arbitrarily short time, provided that the flow amplitude is large enough. The necessary and sufficient condition on such flows is expressed naturally in terms of the spectral properties of the dynamical system associated with the flow. In particular, we find that weakly mixing flows always enhance dissipation in this sense. The proofs are based on a general criterion for the decay of the semigroup generated by an operator of the form G+iAL with a negative unbounded self-adjoint operator G, a self-adjoint operator L, and parameter A >> 1. In particular, they employ the RAGE theorem describing evolution of a quantum state belonging to the continuous spectral subspace of the hamiltonian (related to a classical theorem of Wiener on Fourier transforms of measures). Applications to quenching in reaction-diffusion equations are also considered.

Non-Planar Fronts in Boussinesq Reactive Flows

We consider the reactive Boussinesq equations in a slanted cylinder, with zero stress boundary conditions and arbitrary Rayleigh number. We show that the equations have non-planar traveling front solutions that propagate at a constant speed. We also establish uniform upper bounds on the burning rate and the flow velocity for general front-like initial data for the Cauchy problem.

On the critical dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation

The 2D quasi-geostrophic (QG) equation is a two dimensional model of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. When dissipation is included in the model then solutions always exist if the dissipation's wave number dependence is super-linear. Below this critical power the dissipation appears to be insufficient. For instance, it is not known if the critical dissipative QG equation has global smooth solutions for arbitrary large initial data. In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of global classical solutions of the critical dissipative QG equation for initial data that have small $L^\infty$ norm. The importance of an $L^{\infty}$ smallness condition is due to the fact that $L^{\infty}$ is a conserved norm for the non-dissipative QG equation and is non-increasing on all solutions of the dissipative QG., irrespective of size.

An Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to the Navier-Stokes equations

This work presents an approach to the Navier-Stokes equations that is phrased in unbiased Eulerian coordinates, yet describes objects that have Lagrangian significance: particle paths, their dispersion and diffusion. The commutator between Lagrangian and Eulerian derivatives plays an important role in the Navier-Stokes equations: it contributes a singular perturbation to the Euler equations, in addition to the Laplacian. Bounds for the Lagrangian displacements, their first and second derivatives are obtained without assumptions. Some of these rigorous bounds can be interpreted in terms of the heuristic Richardson law of pair dispersion in turbulent flows.

An Eulerian-Lagrangian Approach for Incompressible Fluids: Local Theory

We present a local existence result for the three dimensional incompressible Euler equations. The solution is constructed using a formulation of the equations as an active vector system in Eulerian coordinates. The formulation employs the inverse of the Lagrangian path map (the "back-to-labels" map) and its Eulerian gradient. We express sufficient conditions for regularity in terms of this gradient.
