One-Electron Singular Branch Lines of the Hubbard Chain

The momentum and energy dependence of the weight distribution in the vicinity of the one-electron spectral-function singular branch lines of the 1D Hubbard model is studied for all values of the electronic density and on-site repulsion $U$. To achieve this goal we use the recently introduced pseudofermion dynamical theory. Our predictions agree quantitatively for the whole momentum and energy bandwidth with the peak dispersions observed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy in the quasi-1D organic conductor TTF-TCNQ.

One and Two-Electron Spectral Function Line Shapes in the Vicinity of the Upper-Hubbard Bands Lower Limit

In this paper we derive general expressions for few-electron spectral functions of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for values of the excitation energy in the vicinity of the $M^{th}$ upper-Hubbard band lower limit. Here $M=1,2,...$ is the rotated-electron double occupation, which vanishes for the ground state and is a good quantum number for all values of the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$. Our studies rely on a combination of symmetries of the model with a recent finite-energy holon and spinon description of the quantum problem. We apply our general scheme to the one-electron addition spectral function, dynamical structure factor, and spin singlet Cooper pair addition spectral function. Our results provide physically interesting information about the finite-energy spectral properties of the many-electron one-dimensional quantum liquid.

Coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the Anderson lattice

We study the interplay between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in a generalized infinite-$U$ Anderson lattice, where both superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order are introduced phenomenologically in mean field theory. In a certain regime, a quantum phase transition is found which is characterized by an abrupt expulsion of magnetic order by d-wave superconductivity, as externally applied pressure increases. This transition takes place when the d-wave superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, intercepts the magnetic critical temperature, $T_m$, under increasing pressure. Calculations of the quasiparticle bands and density of states in the ordered phases are presented. We calculate the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ in the clean limit. It is shown that when the temperature drops below $T_m$ a double peak structure develops in $σ(ω)$.

Finite-Energy Landau Liquid Theory for the 1D Hubbard Model: Pseudoparticle Energy Bands and Degree of Localization/Delocalization

This paper is part of a broader study whose main goal is the study of the finite-energy spectral properties of the non-perturbative one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model and the evaluation of finite-energy correlation-function expressions. Here we study the deviations from the ground state values of double occupancy which result from creation or annihilation of holons, spinons, and pseudoparticles. The band-momentum dependence of the obtained double-occupancy spectra provides important information on the degree of localization/delocalization of the real-space lattice electron site distribution configurations associated with the pseudoparticles. We also study the band-momentum, on-site electronic repulsion, and electronic density dependence of the pseudoparticle energy bands. The shape of these bands plays an important role in the finite-energy spectral properties of the model. Such a shape defines the form of the lines in the momentum-energy/frequency plane where the peaks and edges of the one-electron and two-electron spectral weight of physical operators are located. Our findings are useful for the study of the one-electron and two-electron spectral weight distribution of physical operators.

Interplay of disorder and magnetic field in the superconducting vortex state

We calculate the density of states of an inhomogeneous superconductor in a magnetic field where the positions of vortices are distributed completely at random. We consider both the cases of s-wave and d-wave pairing. For both pairing symmetries either the presence of disorder or increasing the density of vortices enhances the low energy density of states. In the s-wave case the gap is filled and the density of states is a power law at low energies. In the d-wave case the density of states is finite at zero energy and it rises linearly at very low energies in the Dirac isotropic case (α_D=t/Δ_0=1, where t is the hopping integral and Δ_0 is the amplitude of the order parameter). For slightly higher energies the density of states crosses over to a quadratic behavior. As the Dirac anisotropy increases (as Δ_0 decreases with respect to the hopping term) the linear region decreases in width. Neglecting this small region the density of states interpolates between quadratic and back to linear as α_D increases. The low energy states are strongly peaked near the vortex cores.

Non-equilibrium properties of the S=1/2 Heisenberg model in a time-dependent magnetic field

The time-dependent behavior of the Heisenberg model in contact with a phonon heat bath and in an external time-dependent magnetic field is studied by means of a path integral approach. The action of the phonon heat bath is taken into account up to the second order in the coupling to the heath bath. It is shown that there is a minimal value of the magnetic field below which the average magnetization of the system does not relax to equilibrium when the external magnetic field is flipped. This result is in qualitative agreement with the mean field results obtained within $ϕ^{4}$-theory.

Electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ

We study the electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ by means of density-functional band theory, Hubbard model calculations, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The experimental spectra reveal significant quantitative and qualitative discrepancies to band theory. We demonstrate that the dispersive behavior as well as the temperature-dependence of the spectra can be consistently explained by the finite-energy physics of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at metallic doping. The model description can even be made quantitative, if one accounts for an enhanced hopping integral at the surface, most likely caused by a relaxation of the topmost molecular layer. Within this interpretation the ARPES data provide spectroscopic evidence for the existence of spin-charge separation on an energy scale of the conduction band width. The failure of the one-dimensional Hubbard model for the {\it low-energy} spectral behavior is attributed to interchain coupling and the additional effect of electron-phonon interaction.

Quasiparticle density of states of d-wave superconductors in a disordered vortex lattice

We calculate the density of states of a disordered inhomogeneous d-wave superconductor in a magnetic field. The field-induced vortices are assumed to be pinned at random positions and the effects of the scattering of the quasi-particles off the vortices are taken into account using the singular gauge transformation of Franz and Tesanovic. We find two regimes for the density of states: at very low energies the density of states follows a law ρ(ε) \sim ρ_0 + |ε|^α where the exponent is close to 1. A good fit of the density of states is obtained at higher energies, excluding a narrow region around the origin, with a similar power law energy dependence but with αclose to 2. Both at low and at higher energies ρ_0 scales with the inverse of the magnetic length (\sqrt{B}).

Spin dynamics of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic zig-zag ladder with anisotropy

We use exact diagonalization and the modified Lanczos method to study the finite energy and finite momentum spectral weight of the longitudinal and transverse spin excitations of the anisotropic zig-zag ladder. We find that the spin excitations form continua of gapless or gapped spinons in the different regions of the phase diagram. The results obtained are consistent with a picture previously proposed that in the anisotropic case there is a transition from a gapped regime to a gapless regime, for small interchain coupling. In this regime we find a sharp low-energy peak in the structure function for the transverse spin excitations, consistent with a finite stiffness.

Specific Heat of the Periodic Anderson Model: From Weak to Strong Coupling

We study the temperature dependence of the specific heat in the periodic Anderson model as function of the on-site Coulomb interaction, hybridization, and position of the f-electrons energy level. At strong coupling (U=infinity) we use slave bosons, whereas at weak coupling we use a simple Hartree-Fock decomposition. We find that both in the strong and weak coupling limits the specific heat of the system presents a multiple peak structure in a mean field treatment. We believe these features to be related to band-shape effects. The temperature evolution of the low-temperature peak position on the model parameters for the non-half filled non-symmetric case is discussed.

Local Moment Formation in the Periodic Anderson Model with Superconducting Correlations

We study local moment formation in the presence of superconducting correlations among the f-electrons in the periodic Anderson model. Local moments form if the Coulomb interaction U>U_cr. We find that U_cr is considerably stronger in the presence of superconducting correlations than in the non-superconducting system. Our study is done for various values of the f-level energy and electronic density. The smallest critical U_cr values occur for the case where the number of f- electrons per site is equal to one. In the presence of d-wave superconducting correlations we find that local moment formation presents a quantum phase transition as function of pressure. This quantum phase transition separates a region where local moments and d-wave superconductivity coexist from another region characterized by a superconducting ground state with no local moments. We discuss the possible relevance of these results to experimental studies of the competition between magnetic order and superconductivity in CeCu_2Si_2.

Decoupling of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic zig-zag ladder with anisotropy

The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic zig-zag ladder is studied by exact diagonalization of small systems in the regime of weak inter-chain coupling. A gapless phase with quasi long-range spiral correlations has been predicted to occur in this regime if easy-plane (XY) anisotropy is present. We find in general that the finite zig-zag ladder shows three phases: a gapless collinear phase, a dimer phase and a spiral phase. We study the level crossings of the spectrum, the dimer correlation function, the structure factor and the spin stiffness within these phases, as well as at the transition points. As the inter-chain coupling decreases we observe a transition in the anisotropic XY case from a phase with a gap to a gapless phase that is best described by two decoupled antiferromagnetic chains. The isotropic and the anisotropic XY cases are found to be qualitatively the same, however, in the regime of weak inter-chain coupling for the small systems studied here. We attribute this to a finite-size effect in the isotropic zig-zag case that results from exponentially diverging antiferromagnetic correlations in the weak-coupling limit.

Spinor Description of a General Spin-J System

We consider a spin coherent states description of a general quantum spin system. It is shown that it is possible to use the spin-1/2 representation to study the general spin-J case. We identify the 1/2 spinor components as the homogeneous coordinates of the projective space associated to the complex variable that labels the coherent states and establish a relation between the two-component spinor and the bosonic Schwinger representation of a spin operator. We rewrite the equations of motion, obtained from the path integral for the evolution operator or partition function, in terms of the 1/2 spinor and define the effective Hamiltonian of its evolution.

Superconductivity in the SU(N) Anderson Lattice at U=\infty

We present a mean-field study of superconductivity in a generalized N-channel cubic Anderson lattice at U=\infty taking into account the effect of a nearest-neighbor attraction J. The condition U=\infty is implemented within the slave-boson formalism considering the slave bosons to be condensed. We consider the $f$-level occupancy ranging from the mixed valence regime to the Kondo limit and study the dependence of the critical temperature on the various model parameters for each of three possible Cooper pairing symmetries (extended s, d-wave and p-wave pairing) and find interesting crossovers. It is found that the d- and p- wave order parameters have, in general, very similar critical temperatures. The extended s-wave pairing seems to be relatively more stable for electronic densities per channel close to one and for large values of the superconducting interaction J.

Finite-frequency optical absorption in 1D conductors and Mott-Hubbard insulators

The frequency-dependent conductivity is studied for the one-dimensional Hubbard model, using a selection rule, the Bethe ansatz, and symmetries associated with conservation laws. For densities where the system is metallic the absorption spectrum has two contributions, a Drude peak at $ω= 0$ separated by a pseudogap from a broad absorption band whose lower edge is characterized by a non-classical critical exponent. Our findings shed new light on the ``far infrared puzzle'' and other optical properties of metallic organic chain compounds.

Finite-Temperature Transport in Finite-Size Hubbard Rings in the Strong-Coupling Limit

We study the current, the curvature of levels, and the finite temperature charge stiffness, D(T,L), in the strongly correlated limit, U>>t, for Hubbard rings of L sites, with U the on-site Coulomb repulsion and t the hopping integral. Our study is done for finite-size systems and any band filling. Up to order t we derive our results following two independent approaches, namely, using the solution provided by the Bethe ansatz and the solution provided by an algebraic method, where the electronic operators are represented in a slave-fermion picture. We find that, in the U=\infty case, the finite-temperature charge stiffness is finite for electronic densities, n, smaller than one. These results are essencially those of spinless fermions in a lattice of size L, apart from small corrections coming from a statistical flux, due to the spin degrees of freedom. Up to order t, the Mott-Hubbard gap is Δ_{MH}=U-4t, and we find that D(T) is finite for n<1, but is zero at half-filling. This result comes from the effective flux felt by the holon excitations, which, due to the presence of doubly occupied sites, is renormalized to Φ^{eff}=ϕ(N_h-N_d)/(N_d+N_h), and which is zero at half-filling, with N_d and N_h being the number of doubly occupied and empty lattice sites, respectively. Further, for half-filling, the current transported by any eigenstate of the system is zero and, therefore, D(T) is also zero.

Hall conductance of a pinned vortex lattice in a high magnetic field

We calculate the quasiparticle contribution to the zero temperature Hall conductance of two-dimensional extreme type-II superconductors in a high magnetic field, using the Landau basis. As one enters the superconducting phase the Hall conductance is renormalized to smaller values, with respect to the normal state result, until a quantum level-crossing transition is reached. At high values of the order parameter, where the quasiparticles are bound to the vortex cores, the Hall conductance is expected to tend to zero due to a theorem of Thouless.

Quasiparticle spectrum of a type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field with randomly pinned vortices

We show that gapless superconductivity of a strongly type-II superconductor in a high magnetic field prevails in the presence of disorder, suggesting a topological nature. We calculate the density of states of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes quasiparticles for a two-dimensional inhomogeneous system in both cases of weak and strong disorder. In the limit of very weak disorder, the effect is very small and the density of states is not appreciably changed. As the disorder increases, the density of states at low energies increases and the ratio of the low-energy density of states to its maximum increases significantly.
