Differential diffusion effects and super-adiabatic local temperature in lean hydrogen-air turbulent flames

Analyzed in this paper are three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data obtained from seven statistically planar and one-dimensional, lean complex-chemistry hydrogen-air flames propagating in a box with forced turbulence. The simulation conditions cover a wide range of non-dimensional turbulent combustion characteristics. Specifically, root-mean-square turbulent velocity is varied from 2.2 to 54 laminar flame speeds, integral length scale of turbulence is varied from 0.5 to 2.2 laminar flame thicknesses, Damk\"ohler and Karlovitz number are varied from 0.01 to 0.53 and from 10 to 1315, respectively. Two equivalence ratios, 0.5 and 0.35, are explored. Turbulent burning velocities are evaluated for these seven low Lewis number flames and equidiffusion counterparts to six of them. Moreover, conditioned profiles of temperature, fuel consumption and heat release rates and probabilities of finding superadiabatic temperature are sampled from all seven low Lewis number flames. Analyses of obtained results show that both magnitude of superadiabatic temperature and probability of finding it are decreased with increasing Karlovitz number Ka. However, significant influence of differential diffusion effects on local structure of flame reaction zones and bulk burning velocity is well pronounced in all cases, even at Ka as high as 1315. Therefore, a decrease in magnitude of superadiabatic local temperature with increasing Karlovitz number or even negligible probability of finding such a high temperature at high Ka is not an evidence that differential diffusion effects play a minor role under such conditions. The simulated mitigation of phenomenon of superadiabatic temperature at high Ka is attributed to intensification of turbulent mixing in local flame oxidation zones, rather than weakening differential diffusion effects in local flame reaction zones.

Time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order in a kagome superconductor

The kagome lattice, the most prominent structural motif in quantum physics, benefits from inherent nontrivial geometry to host diverse quantum phases, ranging from spin-liquid phases, topological matter to intertwined orders, and most rarely unconventional superconductivity. Recently, charge sensitive probes have suggested that the kagome superconductors AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit unconventional chiral charge order, which is analogous to the long-sought-after quantum order in the Haldane model or Varma model. However, direct evidence for the time-reversal symmetry-breaking of the charge order remains elusive. Here we utilize muon spin relaxation to probe the kagome charge order and superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place just below the charge ordering temperature and persists into the superconducting state. Remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. We further show the multigap nature of superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5 and that the T_c/lambda_{ab}^{-2} ratio is comparable to those of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Our results point to time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order intertwining with unconventional superconductivity in the correlated kagome lattice.

Low-carrier density and fragile magnetism in a Kondo lattice system

Kondo-based semimetals and semiconductors are of extensive current interest as a viable platform for strongly correlated states. It is thus important to understand the routes towards such dilute-carrier correlated states. One established pathway is through Kondo effect in metallic non-magnetic analogues. Here we advance a new mechanism, through which Kondo-based semimetals develop out of conduction electrons with a low carrier-density in the presence of an even number of rare-earth sites. We demonstrate this effect by studying the Kondo material Yb3Ir4Ge13 along with its closed-f-shell counterpart, Lu3Ir4Ge13. Through magnetotransport, optical conductivity and thermodynamic measurements, we establish that the correlated semimetallic state of Yb3Ir4Ge13 below its Kondo temperature originates from the Kondo effect of a low carrier conduction-electron background. In addition, it displays fragile magnetism at very low temperatures, which, in turn, can be tuned to a non Fermi liquid regime through Lu-for-Yb substitution. These findings are connected with recent theoretical studies in simplified models. Our results open an entirely new venue to explore the strong correlation physics in a semimetallic environment.

Doping - dependent anisotropic superconducting gap in Na$_{1-δ}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)As

The London penetration depth was measured in single crystals of self-doped Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs (from under - to optimal - doping, $T_c$ from 14 to 27 K) and electron-doped Na(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)As with $x$ ranging from undoped, $x=0$ to overdoped $x= 0.1$. In all samples, the low - temperature variation of the penetration depth exhibits a power-law dependence, $Δλ(T) = AT^n$, with the exponent that varies in a dome - like fashion from $n \sim 1.1$ in the underdoped, reaching a maximum of $n \sim 1.9$ in the optimally doped and decreasing again to $n \sim 1.3$ on the overdoped side. While the anisotropy of the gap structure follows universal dome-like evolution, the exponent at the optimal doping, $n \sim 1.9$, is lower than in other charge - doped Fe-based superconductors (FeSCs). The full - temperature range superfluid density, $ρ_s(T) = (λ(0)/λ(T))^2$, at the optimal doping is also distinctly different from other charge - doped FeSCs but is similar to isovalently - substituted BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, believed to be a nodal pnictide at the optimal doping. These results suggest that the superconducting gap in Na(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)As is highly anisotropic even at the optimal doping.

Spin-Phonon Coupling in Iron Pnictide Superconductors

The magnetic moment in the parent phase of the iron-pnictide superconductors varies with composition even when the nominal charge of iron is unchanged. We propose the spin-lattice coupling due to the magneto-volume effect as the primary origin of this effect, and formulate a Landau theory to describe the dependence of the moment to the Fe-As layer separation. We then compare the superconductive critical temperature of doped iron pnictides to the local moment predicted by the theory, and suggest that the spin-phonon coupling may play a role in the superconductivity of this compound.

Anisotropy in the Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations of Sr2RuO4

It has been proposed that Sr_2RuO_4 exhibits spin triplet superconductivity mediated by ferromagnetic fluctuations. So far neutron scattering experiments have failed to detect any clear evidence of ferromagnetic spin fluctuations but, instead, this type of experiments has been successful in confirming the existence of incommensurate spin fluctuations near q=(1/3 1/3 0). For this reason there have been many efforts to associate the contributions of such incommensurate fluctuations to the mechanism of its superconductivity. Our unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements revealed that these incommensurate spin fluctuations possess c-axis anisotropy with an anisotropic factor χ''_{c}/χ''_{a,b} of \sim 2.8. This result is consistent with some theoretical ideas that the incommensurate spin fluctuations with a c-axis anisotropy can be a origin of p-wave superconductivity of this material.

One-Parameter Scaling of the Conductivity of Si:B: A Temperature-Independent Variable-Range Hopping Prefactor

For insulating Si:B with dopant concentrations from 0.75 n_c to the critical concentration n_c, the conductivity ranging over five orders of magnitude collapses using a single scaling parameter T* onto a universal curve of the form $σ(T) =σ_0 f (T^*/T)$ with a temperature-independent prefactor of the order of Mott's minimum metallic conductivity. The function $f (T^*/T) = e^{-(T^*/T)^β}$ with β= 1/2 when T^*/T>10, corresponding to Efros-Shklovskii variable-range hopping. For T^*/T < 8 the exponent β= 1/3, a value expected for Mott variable-range hopping in two rather than three dimensions. The temperature-independent prefactor implies hopping that is not mediated by phonons.

One-dimensional nature of the magnetic fluctuations in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$

There is increasing evidence that inhomogeneous distributions of charge and spin--so-called "striped phases"--play an important role in determining the properties of the high-temperature superconductors. For example, recent neutron-scattering measurements on the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ family of materials show both spin and charge fluctuations that are consistent with the striped-phase picture. But the fluctuations associated with a striped phase are expected to be one-dimensional, whereas the magnetic fluctuations observed to date appear to display two-dimensional symmetry. We show here that this apparent two-dimensionality results from measurements on twinned crystals, and that similar measurements on substantially detwinned crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ reveal the one-dimensional character of the magnetic fluctuations, thus greatly strengthening the striped-phase interpretation. Moreover, our results also suggest that superconductivity originates in charge stripes that extend along the b crystal axis, where the superfluid density is found to be substantially larger than for the a direction.

Commensurate dynamic magnetic correlations in La2(Cu,Li)O4

When sufficient numbers of holes are introduced into the two-dimensional CuO2 square lattice, dynamic magnetic correlations become incommensurate with underlying lattice in all previously investigated La_{2-x}A_xCu_{1-z}B_zO_{4+y} (A=Sr or Nd, B=Zn) including high T_C superconductors and insulators, and in bilayered superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8. Magnetic correlations also become incommensurate in structurally related La_2NiO_4 when doped with Sr or O. We report an exception to this so-far well established experimental "rule" in La_2Cu_{1-z}Li_{z}O_4 in which magnetic correlations remain commensurate.

Magnetic correlations and quantum criticality in the insulating antiferromagnetic, insulating spin liquid, renormalized Fermi liquid, and metallic antiferromagnetic phases of the Mott system V_2O_3

Magnetic correlations in all four phases of pure and doped vanadium sesquioxide V_2O_3 have been examined by magnetic thermal neutron scattering. While the antiferromagnetic insulator can be accounted for by a Heisenberg localized spin model, the long range order in the antiferromagnetic metal is an incommensurate spin-density-wave, resulting from a Fermi surface nesting instability. Spin dynamics in the strongly correlated metal are dominated by spin fluctuations in the Stoner electron-hole continuum. Furthermore, our results in metallic V_2O_3 represent an unprecedentedly complete characterization of the spin fluctuations near a metallic quantum critical point, and provide quantitative support for the SCR theory for itinerant antiferromagnets in the small moment limit. Dynamic magnetic correlations for energy smaller than k_BT in the paramagnetic insulator carry substantial magnetic spectral weight. However, the correlation length extends only to the nearest neighbor distance. The phase transition to the antiferromagnetic insulator introduces a sudden switching of magnetic correlations to a different spatial periodicity which indicates a sudden change in the underlying spin Hamiltonian. To describe this phase transition and also the unusual short range order in the paramagnetic state, it seems necessary to take into account the orbital degrees of freedom associated with the degenerate d-orbitals at the Fermi level in V_2O_3.

Neutron Scattering Studies of the Magnetic Fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}

Neutron scattering measurements have been made on the spin fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} for different oxygen doping levels. Incommensurability is clearly observed for oxygen concentrations of 6.6 and 6.7 and is suggested for the 6.93. Measurements of the resonance for the O_{6.6} concentration show that it exists in a broadened and less intense form at temperatures much higher than T_c.

Pseudogap and incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6. 6}

Unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the temperature and wave vector dependence of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility, $χ''(q,ω)$, of a well characterized single crystal $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$ ($T_c=62.7$ K). We find that a pseudogap opens in the spin fluctuation spectrum at temperatures well above $T_c$. We speculate that the appearance of the low frequency incommensurate fluctuations is associated with the opening of the pseudogap. To within the error of the measurements, a gap in the spin fluctuation spectrum is found in the superconducting state.

Absolute measurements of the high-frequency magnetic dynamics in high-Tc superconductors

We review recent measurements of the high-frequency dynamic magnetic susceptibility in the high-$T_c$ superconducting systems La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$. Experiments were performed using the chopper spectrometers HET and MARI at the ISIS spallation source. We have placed our measurements on an absolute intensity scale, this allows systematic trends to be seen and comparisons with theory to be made. We find that the insulating S=1/2 antiferromagnetic parent compounds show a dramatic renormalization of the spin wave intensity. The effect of doping on the response is to cause broadenings in wave vector and large redistributions of spectral weight in the frequency spectrum.

Softening and Broadening of the Zone Boundary Magnons in Pr0.63Sr0.37MnO3

We have studied the spin dynamics in Pr$_{0.63}$Sr$_{0.37}$MnO$_3$ above and below the Curie temperature $T_C=301$ K. Three distinct new features have been observed: a softening of the magnon dispersion at the zone boundary for $T<T_C$, significant broadening of the zone boundary magnons as $T\to T_C$, and no evidence for residual spin-wave like excitations just above $T_C$. The results are inconsistent with double exchange models that have been successfully applied to higher $T_C$ samples, indicating an evolution of the spin system with decreasing $T_C$.

Evolution of the low-frequency spin dynamics in ferromagnetic manganites

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering was used to study two ferromagnetic manganites A$_{1-x}$B$_{x}$MnO$_3$ (x $\approx$ 0.3) with $T_c$=197.9 K and 300.9 K. The spin dynamical behavior of these is similar at low temperatures, but drastically different at temperatures around $T_c$. While the formation of spin clusters of size ($\sim20$ Å) dominates the spin dynamics of the 197.9 K sample close to $T_c$, the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition for the 300.9 K sample is more conventional. These results, combined with seemingly inconsistent earlier reports, reveal clear systematics in the spin dynamics of the manganites.

Magnetic Dynamics in Underdoped YBCO: Direct Observation of a Superconducting Gap

Polarized and unpolarized triple-axis spectrometry has been used to study an underdoped YBa_2Cu3O6.6. Our results indicate that spin excitations in the superconducting state are essentially the same as those in the fully doped material except that the unusual 41 meV resonance is observed at 34.8 meV. The normal state spin excitations are characterized by a weakly energy-dependent continuum whose temperature dependence shows the clear signature of a superconducting gap at Tc. The enhancement at the resonance is accompanied by a suppression of magnetic fluctuations at both higher and lower energies.

Dramatic Switching of Magnetic Exchange in a Classic Transition Metal Oxide: Evidence for Orbital Ordering

Spin correlations in metallic and insulating phases of $V_2O_3$ and its derivatives are investigated using magnetic neutron scattering. Metallic samples have incommensurate spin correlations varying little with hole doping. Paramagnetic insulating samples have spin correlations only among near neighbors. The transition from either of these phases into the low temperature insulating antiferromagnetic phase is accompanied by an abrupt change of dynamic magnetic short range order. Our results support the idea that the transition into the antiferromagnetic insulator is also an orbital ordering transition.
